OK, Maybe my headline is a little bit of an exaggeration. But I was excited to see that three days after I started a thread in activism to get THR members to let Romney hear our voices telling him where he was wrong on assault weapons bans, he came out with a press release stating that he does not support bans on semi-automatic weapons. Apparently his comment about supporting bans of weapons of unusual lethality was referring to full auto guns, grenades, rocket launchers etc. Sure, it's a little wishy washy, but I think it is a big step forward to have him put it in print that he doesn't support banning semi-autos. Obviously he isn't as strong as some of the other candidates on the 2nd Amendment, but it is encouraging to see progress amongst the candidates in general.

I know the last Romney thread in general discussions got locked pretty quick. I hope this isn't getting too far into politics to be allowed by the moderators. I'm taking this statement from the moderator who locked that thread as my guide here:

"I do not support any new gun laws including any new ban on semi-automatic firearms. As president, I will follow President Bush's precedent of opposing any laws that go beyond the restrictions in place when I take office. The laws I do and will support include decades-old restrictions on weapons of unusual lethality like grenades, rocket launchers, fully automatic firearms and what are legally known as destructive devices and would include similar restrictions on new and exotic weapons of similar or even greater lethality.

Arfin Greebly said:Someone opens a thread specifically addressing Romney's stated views on gun control (which is a valid topic), and the next thing I know we're reading about all the other candidates, including the guy from the Ham Sandwich Party, and the UN even gets a line.
