Guys come here in a few weeks I'll have my custom percussion .36 cal squirrel rifle for pictures. :)

A .36 cal small game rifle is what I need! Unfortunately I have too many hobbies to put that kind of money into one thing. I wish there were an affordable option. I've wondered if a Traditions Crockett has enough meat to rebore to .36 or even .38-.40 (thinking it would be great to shoot a patched .380" ball as I need a .36 cal revolver too).

I'm not sure, if the Crockett uses a 13/16" wide barrel than I think it would be fine to rebore to .36 cal. Robert Hoyt would be a good choice for the job.

I wanted a .36 because I've heard they don't foul as quickly as a .32, the reloading is a bit easier due to slightly larger components over the tiny .32, and it has some more range and power but is really good for small squirrel and rabbits on up to coyote out to 75-100 yards. Plus, you can use bulk Hornady 000 buckshot which measures .350" wide and is cheap enough that it's not even worth the trouble of casting balls.

As much as I love my .54 cal plains rifle, it's way too much for efficient small game hunting and even for paper punching uses a lot of lead and powder per shot.

That is what my Lyman Deerstalker .50 seems to like too ! :)

Have you not found a good PRB load? Though I settled on 70 grns of 3F Olde E or T7 using grape seed oil (the ole lady was not happy when she caught me checking out her olive oils and pointed me to the grape seed oil so that I didn't sleep in a bed by myself) and 0.015-016" patches I was getting ~3-4" groups at 50 yds which is pathetic but I also needed glasses and have some on the way finally.

Found this and two other custom-made Hawken-style rifles in a pawn shop. The other two were made by John Bergmann of TN and the late Ted Fellows of WA. This one was crafted by Joe Corley back in the early '80's when the Hawken style was "King of the Hill". Joe was one of a handful of custom gunsmiths that worked for Art Ressel's Hawken Shop in St. Louis (1960's - early 1980's). This rifle weighs 11 lbs. The .54 caliber barrel was crafted by Hoppy Hopkins, H & H Barrel Company, the lock by Ron Long, and all the metal furniture, barrel tang, breech plug, lock, & triggers are color case-hardened. Up close, its gorgeous. Bought each rifle for the price of a new Lyman Great Plains rifle.

That's a beautiful Hawken; what a deal!

I have only two percussion rifles; someone finagled my Crockett from me, sigh. Never had a fouling problem with that little .32 and accuracy was incredible. I hope this makes me a member of this group.

Special order .54 a US M1841 "Mississippi" rifle from Euroarms; I've had it a good, long while and it's killed deer.

Mike Lange built this .45 "kids" rifle and I love it. I'm small so it fits me like a glove. It's my go-to target rifle.

Got some "mink oil" patch lube from Track of the Wolf and I'm going to make some homemade patches soon out of pillow ticking and cotton drill from the fabric store. Anyone know where to get a 1 3/8" patch cutter for a .54 cal?
