Be patient. Notice that sometimes there are months between updates of membership rolls. We all saw your pictures of your nice guns.

Welcome.

Good news, guys! The repair folks are supposed to finish our kitchen remodel needed from broken pipes so I may have access to my shop by next week end. I may be able to actually lay hands on my BP stuff that has been boxed in (literally) by the stuff from the kitchen.

A fellow is driving in the country and notices a farmer holding a large sow pig in an apple orchard. As he comes to a stop he notices the farmer is hefting this large pig up to the branch of a tree so the pig can take an apple in it's mouth. The farmer continues to hold the pig as it eats the apple and then uses all his strength to lift the sow to another apple on the branch. Amazed at the what he has witnessed the fellow parks his car and walks over to the farmer. Driver: "I couldn't help but notice all effort you're putting in to feeding that pig."Farmer: "Yeah I really like this sow. She's one of my best."Driver: "Well it seems there might be a more efficient way to get the apples to her. What if you set her on the ground and shook the apples from the tree? She could eat them off the ground. Just think of all the time that would be saved."Farmer: "Your probably right, but what's time to a pig?"

have a great week

I want to join

Here is my two 1858 Remingtons. Both are Pietta's. Top one is an 8" target I got from Cabela's a couple years ago. The bottom is a 12" buffalo I just got less than two weeks ago from Traditions through Old South Firearms.

So far I've only shot it one time running 15 shots through it. The first 5 shots were to ensure it would hit an 8.5x11' sheet of paper at 25 yards which it did quite well. Had to adjust sights to bring POI left about 1.5" to POA. The next 5 shots were over my Pact 1XP chronograph which was a measured 10 ft in front of the muzzle. Using 35 grains by volume of Pyrodex P (FFFg) and .451 round ball I averaged 1239 fps. The next 5 shots were through the chronograph still using 35 grains of Pyrodex but with .454 round ball and got an average of 1245 fps. I wasn't really shooting for group, more to glean data with different components, but I could have drawn a circle around the 10 shot group that probably wouldn't have been more than 3 inches in diameter. That also would include 10 shots from my 8 inch 1858. Both guns shoot well as they have adjustable rear target sights. I hope to do more load development shooting with Triple-7 and the .451 & .454 round balls over my chronograph. Then I'll get serious about dialing it in for POA/POI accuracy.

I see that it's been about a year since the THR Remington 1858 Club had an entry so I thought I would join up with my brand new Pietta Remington Model 1858 in .36 caliber! Just got it for Christmas and love the way it looks and how nicely it balances and handles.

I just noticed the old thread has been locked. Here's a link to the old one for the curious.
I'll be adding to this one soon with my new conversion cylinder coming in the mail

LATE EDIT: Sorry .. maybe the cookies made me think it was working. I think I have it now?

It's in .36 caliber. I had a Navy Arms Model 1858 .44 caliber many moons ago but had to sell it when I needed money for school. This time around I thought I would go a little bit smaller with the .36 caliber version.

I had no problem accessing these supposedly lock link.

Hey guys, if you've been following my post, it should be quite evident that I'm extremely news 2 black powder shooting. So comma I'm in need of suggestions, how tos and where at when it comes to those who may work or perform needed modifications.
Without measuring the cylinder or the barrel and even not having a round ball to slug the barrel what diameter balls do y'all think I should start out with, keep in mind I don't own any not even one to float the barrel.

Use .380 round balls with 17-20 grs of FFFg. I like to put a lubed felt wad under the ball but you do as you please. First purchase should be some good after market nipples. (TRESO, SLIX, STAINLESS)
First mod should be a 1/4" Dremel Sanding drum passed down the nipple cuts in the cylinder to allow a snail capper to be used. (Further instructions if you need them)

Enjoy.
