Tip - if you all dont have a generator, start freezing water in any sort of container for ice to keep the fridge and freezer cold when the power goes down.

One thing that the community I live in has been discussing is looters. We live in close proximity to and area that has been the source of some news reports about shootings and beatings. The neighborhood has expressed that they wanted a way to protect the community from looters. A few other armed citizens (6 in total if you include me) spoke up and said that itd be best to arm the houses with able bodied adults. While I would like to keep the neighborhood safe I am a bit leary about handing some of my "extra" rifles to untrained and inexperienced people. When asked my thoughts I told them "I'll have to think about it".

I am kind of at a stalemate with my self. I keep having images of looters bursting into my neighbor's homes and clearing the place out because no one could stop them. and then at the same time I imagine some overly panicky neighbor with my surplus rifle sitting in his window and firing wildly at a person that walks up to someone elses home. If Irene is going to put us into a serious state of emergency what are the legalities of arming my neighbors with "extra" rifles (mostly Mosin-Nagants, Enfield variants and Mauser variants)? I won't be the only one that'd be handing out weapons either, we are a large neighborhood but only 6 of us actually own firearms. If we were to arm some of the nieghbors I'd feel much better giving them a safety and familirazation brief.

Everyone in the neighborhood is kinda jumpy at the moment and while we've gotten most other issues out of the way(water, sheltering those whose houses become uninhabitable etc...) this is still kind of hanging there. Any help, advice and words of wisdom would be appreciated. This is in NJ by the way and we're awful close to the coast line.

While I might sell or trade an extra weapon to a trusted friend or neighbor, I think loaning them is a bad idea.

My biggest concern is looters so I am not sure if I will leave or not. During Isabelle the looters broke into several stores 1/4 mile from me. I am situated in a neighborhood several hundred yards from the bay but I have never had any flooding, whether from hurricanes or noreasters. If I get no damage and the power goes out I will be heading out of town.

I am not too sure about arming the neighbors. I have some shotguns I could let some use but I wouldn't be comfortable with center fire rifles. My son-in-law lives in Chesapeake so I may need to take some supplies to him and his wife and 6 mos old gbaby.

During Isabelle the police were kept busy and the looters were corraled fairly quickly but you never know.

I wouldn't feel comfortable lending my guns to anyone unless I knew them personally, had shot with them before, and felt 100% sure that they had my back when SHTF.

On the other hand, I don't feel comfortable letting people know I have guns, much less whether or not I have "extras".

I'm as close to the Gulf Coast as I want to "live".
Me too.

Regardless, best of luck to all affected. I hope everybody comes out safe.

Just want to say to everyone in the path; Be safe and we're all keeping our fingers crossed for this to be a minor thing.

I don't find it interesting at all. It is because the US is evolving into a godless society. No rules... unless you're caught....

The hurricane just made landfall at Cape Lookout NC area. Rain is spreading almost to DC now. Big storm.

didnt hear of looting in libya?? what do you think they did as soon as they took over any city. i read about it multiple different places. not too mention all the armories they emptied, arming themselves with everything you can imagine

While I agree that US society has deteriorated I don't think religion (or lack of faith as you allude to) is the primary causal factor. Also, these looters know there are rules so it's not a lack of those either. It's the lack of CONSEQUENCES after breaking those rules. From birth through their teen years, too many of us ask little of our youth and this includes RESPECT of themselves and others. Also, they do bad things and there are no consequences. In my opinion, our social problems revolve around lack of CONSEQUENCES and lack of RESPECT.

Since Irene has weakened to a cat-1 then they most likely won't have a bad situation on their hands. But, if the damage is severe, then God help them survive the HUMAN threats.

So if somone decides to coficate firearms anyware, and the person is at another residence, what happens. Do they break in and rip out your safe?
Can't most of this be solved by simply not being home? I have neighboors with 2 or 3 homes, is it ok to just break in if they are at another home?

Mike, I don't disagree with you. I used the term "godless" as in the traditional sense it embodies all of the qualites or effects you mentioned; Consequenses, Respect, and other related kinds of terms.

If potential looters held to these things, there would be little crime. Most crime is caused by a minority of the population which makes it potentally miserable for the rest of us. In Libya as with wars in general, the proportions change relative to the rest of the general population.

...is it ok to just break in if they are at another home.

Of course not, but some people rationalize their actions by saying or believing such things as "they are rich and can afford it".

If the damage is significant in NYC, maybe they might re-think their gun laws.

Even a Cat 1 hurricane is nothing to sneeze at, especially for folks along coastlines. This one is moving slow, and storm surge combined with high tide is bad news for the waterfront. How much rain it's going to generate I don't know, here in SE NC we only got 1.1" so far. But some of the stronger ones carry lots of water- Hurricane Floyd in 1999 dumped up to 19" of rain in some areas of NC, and that right on the heels of Hurricane Dennis, which had just delivered up to 15" in some of the same areas of the state a few weeks before.

If you're in the areas expected to be affected by this storm, pay attention!

Radar coverage is visible at the following links:

My local radar, at Shallotte, NC, is now showing the back side of the storm - http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/radar.php?product=N0R&rid=ltx&loop=yes

Current (Sat., 12:30 local) center of the storm, from the Moorehead City, NC radar - http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/radar.php?product=N0R&rid=mhx&loop=yes

Wakefield, VA is the next radar to the north - and it has a screen full of Irene at present too: http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/radar.php?product=N0R&rid=akq&loop=yes

Next up the coast is Dover AFB, DE, and that scope is about half full - http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/radar.php?product=N0R&rid=dox&loop=yes

This is a big storm and not to be taken lightly...

Lessons from Katrina: Those who lost their homes most regretted losing their old family photos. Safeguard those. Just remember, people before stuff. Good luck and Godspeed to all in Irene's path.

Watching the 5 o'clock news. The coverage has been running all day of course. I have gotten 6+ inches and we still have about 10hrs to go. The winds have been up to 60mph and my electricity is still on, thank God. I have seen several reports of deaths and the first looting reports. Seems to be teenage kids and they were caught and arrested. The eye is about 90 south of me and moving @14mph. The eye was predicted to go over me but has now been revised to pass about 10 miles to the east.

My wifes son in Greenville NC had a tree fall on their house and are now displaced. At least there were no injuries.

Still hanging in there and hoping the power stays on. I was without power for 10 days during Isabelle and I am prepared but thankful I can sit in an airconditioned home and watch it unfold on the tv.

Starting to quiet down out there now. It has been a pretty interesting 24 hours. I live about 10 miles back from the actual beach and we have had over 10" of rain and it is still coming down. Hear there were 4 people died as a result of this storm in NC and 3 in VA (2 from trees falling on them). So far we have been fortunate enough to have our power stay on so I've spent most of the day prepping brass and listening to the news. It appears most of the damage to this area is going to be from flooding. A house across the street from me lost siding on one side of his house. I haven't heard of any looting but then all I've heard on the local news is weather reports. It is supposed to move through over niight and can't say I'll miss Irene. If you live up north and she's heading your way, better get ready for a nasty storm.

It has come to NH just wind at the moment. Lights have been flickering and the TV has shut itself off twice.

EDIT: Just realized this is my 2 year anniversary here on THR.

Wow, dodged the bullet. Day light has come and I just did a damage assessment.
The eye passed an hour ago 20 miles to my east. We miraculously suffered no damage and not even a tree down. Power went out for a minute around midnight. It did get dicey last night though as a bunch of tornadoes broke out.

An earthquake, a hurricane and tornadoes...all in one week!

Good luck to you guys up the coast.

I'm here in the Hartford area of CT.

My wife and I just bought a house here, and while she went down this weekend to be with her family in NC (Raleigh area- they just got rain), I'm here in the new empty house mudding, sanding, painting, etc...

Winds are starting to pick up. Should get real interesting here right around noon today based on the maps I've seen.

When I packed for the weekend, I brought a decent amount of canned food, some beer (hey, it's liquid bread- good survival food!), anda case of water bottles. I also brought along my M&P9, and Remington 870. Extra ammo for both.

Ill keep it firearm related... Went to bed with my SBE2 with 12 rounds of oo buck and my 627 with 2 extra moon clips. The wife got my 35 remingon carbine and her 638 j frame. No damage here, just 40 mph winds and about 3 inches of rain. Ill take a drive and post pics of the potomac in a bit

I'm Northwest of Philly (King of Prussia area) and looks like Irene is moving out. We had minor flooding along the Perkiomen Creek and Schuylkill River, but still getting a lot of wind. Didn't lose power (yet!)

Got the call from work at 8pm - don't come in.

Had the bugout bag ready, fortunately didn't need it.
I'm here in the Hartford area of CT.

hey 19-3Ben - Lived in Hartford when Gloria went thru in 1985 (actually, this is the 5th hurricane I've been experienced) - sounds like you've got the plan!!

Good luck all!
