Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

I spent 4 days in north-central Saskatchewan the first week of September. My #1 son and I traveled by pickup up there and hunted with our friends, another father/ son duo. IMG_8516.jpg IMG_8534.jpg IMG_8547.jpg IMG_8542.jpg
I chose to carry my old 870 3½" supermag

Every time I fired a 3½" BB steel waterfowl load my hat spun around and my britches fell down around my ankles.
I ended up shooting most of my birds with 3" bbs.

I have an 870 Supermag… 3.5” shells are… rough.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 You need to try 3 1/2" turkey loads next spring! Those will blow you right out of your britches 🤣🤣🤣🤣

It had to be a great hunt and time with family and friends!!!! Thanks for sharing.

I started at P18 and walked on upper Gold Camp to Tunnel 3. Then took the red and white trail to the number three.

^Number 3^ St. Mary's Falls. Then I walked back to the black dot under "Falls" That's where the fun began.

I crossed the creek and followed a trail on the east side. I thought it would cross the creek again and get back on the trail here.

And that was a no.

I followed a trail up through the black dots.

It was kinda cool. I've never been up here before and I'm probably going back but I wasn't sure how far I was going to have to walk back along Gold Camp Road.

I ended up in Sweetwater Cañon and did 10.5 miles total before I got back to the car.

I post photos of that Granite Face frequently.

@bubbaturbo asked about the recoil of the 10mm. I finally made it to the range for a little 10mm trigger time.
I had some good examples for recoil comparison. 180gr FMJ'S - Federal at 1030 fps, Underwood at 1250 fps. 200gr hardcast - HSM at 1040 fps, Underwood at 1250 fps.
The faster loads definitely produced more recoil. The XDM handle the loads equally as well as the Glock. I was able to get back on target quicker with the light loads, and the XDM compact was faster for me than the red dot Glock. Just a sign that I need more practice with the dot.
Recoil tolerance is an individual thing. With so many lightly loaded 10mm target and defense loads on the market I would recommend that you give a 10mm a try. If you are a 1911 fan go that route for a little more weight and less recoil.
But of course I am a THR enabler so adding another firearm is never a bad idea.

The leaves are starting to change here in WI. I will be heading to the trails in the next few weeks!!!!

Thanks for the information. I was looking at an XDM over the weekend. Only on line so no chance it will arrive anytime soon. I still need trigger time with SR-1911. Might just be the last semi auto 10mm I buy.
At least you admit you enable. Not always a bad thing either.

Long Story Warning.

I hiked out to Loud's Cabin yesterday.

My wife has severe arthritis and this hike is beyond her. So Saturday night before I went I found two (horrible) trail videos on YouTube to show her the route.

Both videos showed a Dugout on the way to the cabin. Based on the videos The Dugout was just off the trail between the main trail and the first bridge over Bear Creek. That's not a big area.

Both videos also implied that the dugout was part of the cabin's out buildings. I don't think it is because it was a mile and a half away from the cabin. It wasn't really near any water source. It couldn't have been a Spring House. The Dugout is a pit that somebody dug that's maybe 10 ft Square and then they walled it with dry laid stones.

So on my way out to the cabin I'm looking all around to see this dugout. I ran into a guy who was coming back and I asked him if he knew where it was at. He described it perfectly and then pointed me in the exact opposite direction away from The Dugout.

I don't remember exactly where I ran into the guy on the trail but we were between the main trail and the first bridge over Bear Creek so we probably weren't 50 yards from The Dugout.

FWIW that's the first bridge over Bear Creek. If I had turned around exactly where I was at here and taking 50 steps back down the trail I would have been right next to the dugout.

So on the way back I was looking all along the right side of the trail and I saw the dugout.

The Red Dot is on the roof and there's a path right around that down tree that leads to the front (only) door.

I can't come up with the reason why the guy that built the cabin would build this place a mile and a half away.
20230924_143941.jpg
On the left side of the picture those limbs appear to be some kind of bed and you can't see it in the picture because it's just out of frame on the right side but somebody had stacked a tarp and some other items out there.

I don't know if somebody was living there or (and this is actually quite likely) when the forest service people go out there to maintain the trails that might be where they stay at night. I've seen them out there (not necessarily at the dug out) and they usually stay out overnight.

Anyway the place gave me the creeps. It was like walking into somebody's house and I'm assuming that anybody that would actually be living out there would be a little bit nuts. Although I can't imagine why anyone who would live out there would build their home so close to the trail.

So, I literally stuck my phone through the door took two or three pictures and got the hell out of there.

Here is my Glock.

This is a waterfall on Seven Bridges Trail.

ETA I asked in a local hiking group. The general consensus is it was a root cellar built far away from the homestead to keep the wild animals away

Quick question on grip angle. Hard to tell from the photo.
Is the XDm closer to a 1911 grip angle or closer to the Glock with relation to the trigger face?
Thanks

I'm part of the local hiking group on Facebook. I asked in the group if anybody knew the history of The Dugout and this is what I was told. 20230924_154827.jpg
^Bonus Photo of the Trail^

Apparently there were two homesteads in the area, Loud's Cabin and a guy named Jones who apparently tried to buy a bunch of land that is now called Jones Park and he was going to make a resort out of it similar to The Broadmoor.

The Dugout is thought to have been a root cellar that was thought to have been placed where it's at to keep it away from the homesteads so that it wouldn't attract wild animals.

No one seems to be sure if The Dugout was owned by Loud or Jones
