:fire: This happened on my campus (NCSU), right in front of the dorm I used to live in. This is I think the third armed robbery on campus just this semester. Crime this year is ridiculous:

Expires: 11/7/2004

On Wednesday October 27, 2004, at 2:45 am, two subjects were robbed on
Thurman Dr. while walking to their vehicle. Two suspects armed with
handguns approached them demanding money. One victim was hit on the head
with the butt of the gun, while the other suspect fired a warning shot.
Both victims complied with demands and handed over their wallets. The
suspects were last seen getting into a late model, four door sedan,
burgundy in color, that is possibly a Ford or Mercury. The vehicle left
the area in an unknown direction of travel.

Suspect descriptions and composites are available on the NCSU Police
website www.ncsu.edu/police

Anyone who might have information about this incident should call the
NCSU Police at 515-3000 or Crime Stoppers of North Carolina State
University at 226-CRIM(E).

Safety Tips:
-------------
*Always walk in well-lighted areas at night.

*Don't walk alone after hours, use the Safety Escort 515-3000

*Report suspicious activity to the Police immediately.

Thing is, there were two students, and Thurman drive is lighted. Gooo safety tips.

I've about had it with this stuff, so I sent off a message to the chancellor. Doubt it will have any effect, but it made me feel better :p

Dear Chancellor Oblinger,

As a student at NC State, I am particularly disturbed with the amount of
violent crime on campus this year. Just this morning, two individuals
were assaulted and robbed at gunpoint on Thurman drive. One criminal
even fired a shot. Fortunately, no one was hit. The 'Crime Alert'
email provided the following safety tips:

*Always walk in well-lighted areas at night.

*Don't walk alone after hours, use the Safety Escort 515-3000

I have noticed these in all the previous crime alerts sent out. Thurman
drive is lighted, and the victims were not walking alone. While these
tips will help avoid some crime, apparently this is not enough.
Campus policy bans firearms on campus, which obviously did not prevent
these two thugs or the other armed robbers this year from walking well
into campus and victimizing students. I strongly recommend the firearms
policy on campus be modified.
It would greatly improve safety if students, faculty, and staff licensed
with the state of North Carolina to concealed carry handguns be allowed
to carry on campus. Concealed Carry License, or CCL, holders have gone
though hours of training as well as having a thourough SBI background
check. People like this are the ones we need with firearms on our
campus to deter crime.
Many uninformed individuals might view this as a precursor to "western
style" gun fights on campus. This is simply not true. That was a
common fear before the CCL law was passed in North Carolina. None of
these incidents occured. In fact, states with CCL laws have lower
violent crime rates than those without. This connection could be
applied to our campus to improve safety.
It is best that students be given an opportunity to defend themselves.
If a student chooses to walk alone, at night, and in the dark, then that
is their choice. However, if a student desires to carry a firearm for
self-defense, the student (if licensed) should be allowed. It is
inhumane to subject a responsible person to these crimes through
disarmament.
Requiring persons carrying to register with the NCSU Campus Police would
even be a reasonable precaution, and make the campus safer.
I hope you consider this as an option to reduce crime on campus, before
a student gets seriously hurt or killed.

Thank you for your time,

[Fletcher]

Is it just Campus policy to ban legally owned firearms? Or does State law
say no guns. If it is just Campus policy, and has no LAW backing it, I would carry and not worry to much. That is IF you have a ccw permit.
Of course this IS JUST MY OPINION...Check you'r localaty for legality....
Ken

I'm fairly certain (though not 100%) that the state law only prohibits firearms on grade schools, and doesn't apply to universities. I'll check into that real quick.

Boooooo - apparently it's state law:
(a)The following definitions apply to this section:
(1) Educational property. - Any school building or bus,
school campus, grounds, recreational area, athletic
field, or other property owned, used, or operated
by any board of education or school board of
trustees, or directors for the administration of
any school.

...

(1b) School. - A public or private school, community
college, college, or university.

Oh well :( Maybe I should forward this to my state representatives :p

Our Universities and community collegaes are also disarmed victim zones, even here in AZ. Only in Utah can you get away with campus carry, or did they change that?

I thought a no firearm sign created an invisible forcefield that kept guns out. People fail to realize that those percautions lower the risk of robbery it does not emliminate that risk. Everyone should know that every second in his or her life is an oprotunity for someone to do harm to them. Avoidance and percaution is a must. But sometimes you need to fight.

Well, at the moment, it has not been changed, but the 2 guys leading in the polls to become the new Governor have stated that they are in favor of letting the schools decide for themselves.

This might be a deadend but will post it anyhow.Just after AZ passed their CCW and people where posting their no firearms allowed signs
http://www.brassroots.org/ was looking for a case like this for a lawsuit to challenge the the laws that stop you from carrying in areas.I have no idea whether they wanted it in AZ or will challenge in another state.Contact them and see what they say.If they don't want it they might be able to steer them to a group that would.
Good Luck
Bob

Another Friendly Easy Victim Zone @ the University of Florida ~Please Rob or Kill Me, I Will NOT Resist!~ What did you guys expect from leftist institutions? lol

I hope you proofread the letter before you sent it out.

On October 22 at my school, University of Illinois at Chicago:

A female UIC student reported to police that she was the victim of an armed robbery at 1 p.m. today. The student told UIC police she was walking in the 2200 block of west Polk Street when she was approached by three young men on bicycles. She said that one of the men produced a pistol and demanded money. Police say that when the victim told the robbers she did not have any money, they threatened to shoot her, forcibly took a cell phone, and fled. The victim was not injured. The perpetrators are described as African American males in their teens.

And a few days later:

UIC students reported two robberies Sunday night.

A teaching assistant was the victim of a strong-arm robbery at 7 p.m. in the 1300 block of west Lexington Ave. The victim was approached by three offenders, who grabbed the victim about the neck and arms and fled with a wallet. The subjects were described as male blacks, all 15 to 16 years old and wearing dark jackets and jeans. Two were described as 5-foot-10 and slim, one was 5-6 and slim.

Another UIC student reported being robbed at gunpoint just after midnight in an alley in the 1400 block of west Polk Street (at Loomis street). The offender, who was armed with a black revolver, was described as a male black, about 30 years old, 5-foot-5, wearing a blue jacket over a black hooded sweatshirt. The offender fled on foot.

Neither victim was injured.

I don't understand why there is crime; guns are illegal in Chicago.
