WalMart

I've never had that happen. They just look at the ID and punch in DOB.

They swiped my DL at a Wal Mart recently for the first time, up til then it had been what you describe.

The explanation was the swipe was only used to verify the ID, since I guess it's harder to fake the embedded magnetic strip, and that makes sense.

I guess I just worry about the ease of record keeping if their corporate decided to start.

If you shop at Walmart and use a credit card, I bet you would be amazed at the level of detail they could provide information if it ever is their desire or need to look at or analyze your shopping habits.

I was wondering what you meant by swiping, now I understand. They'd have a hard time with the NC license, it doesn't have a magnetic strip on it. It's some kind of funky optical thing. But then I'm old enough that the just look at me and hit the button on the key pad to bypass the age prompt...

I have bought a ton of ammo at my local Wal Marts and have never been carded.:) I usually have to wait for a while till someone shows up with a key, but thats the price I pay to get ammo that is still somewhat reasonably priced.

Here in Illinois, they register just prompts them to "Check FOID Card". I just have my 12 year old daughter show them hers. They hit the "Yes" and everybody is happy. I've only had one WW Clerk, stop and say "I need to you see yours sir, she's not eighteen."

Gander Mountain on the other hand, their clerks know to ask "Pistol or Rifle" if someone is in the 18-21 range after they check the FOID card. Not that they done it to me, but people in line ahead of me.

Now, the fact that I have to show my FOID to buy just plastic wads and lead shot, because they are considered by the Peoples Democratic Republic of Illinois to be "ammuntion and/or ammuntion components", is just stupid, but not the fault of Gander Mountain.

they have always asked me, maybe because they think im a young punk ass teenager. i just show it to them and leave happy.

Boy, I just can't get enough discussions about Wal*Mart.

Be glad you aren't a mod over at Glock Talk then. I swear every third thread there is about Wal Mart. Some members even tried to start a Wal Mart sub forum, but Eric wouldn't go for it.

Btw, not trying to start a forum war. It just seems that Wal Mart does come up alot on gun boards, especially GT.

No kidding. Maybe we should just sticky the following statement:

Walmart requires salespeople to verify the age of anyone buying ammo. You must be 18 to buy ammo typically used in long guns, 21 for handgun ammo. Sometimes they ask if the ammo is for a handgun or rifle so they know what age to check for.

These threads always crack me up. My favorite posts are from the tin-foil hat people that think Walmart is tracking they're every movement so they can sell the info to .gov to make it easier to find you when they want to implant the tracking chip. The "handgun or rifle" question seems to particularly upset this crowd.

I also like the "They never card me" posts. If you're grey-haired, use a walker, or stroll around with the top of your Depends visible above your baggy pants, then it's not going to take a rocket scientist to deduce that you're north of 21. I'm 43 and look it. When the salesperson is experienced, or has a glimmer of intelligence in his/her eyes, they'll skip right past the ID question and sell me the ammo. These are the people that have a future outside of Walmart. (That's when I go to a store out of state. In Mass, we need an FID or gun license to buy ammo).

Sometimes I get carded because the register asks the clerk to do it. If the register asked the same clerk to do the Chicken Dance before selling me the ammo, they'd do that too. Unless they're very young, these people have reached their professional ceiling as a clerk at Walmart. If fate is kind to them, they'll look good in a blue vest.

I once met a Walmart store manager that told me about a Walmart store somewhere that got dinged for selling ammo to a minor, and they've since made it their policy to check ID. Nobody should be offended. They're not being nosy, they're just covering their corporate butt.

I have never had an ID swiped for anything at Wal-Mart. However, the clerks do look close, because the machine asks them to type in the DOB, so they are usually looking between the card, and their POS (Point of Sale) terminal. Same at any other store. Sports Authority used to maintain a written log with name, address, license number, item and signature certification. The log was kept on the counter, and used for ammo, air guns, CO2, BB's, Pellets, Knives, Archery gear...Similar to below:
John Smith 7/4/76 123 Main Street Anytown, CT DL:CT 123456789 500 RDS .22LR
Now, you just have to sign the credit card machine, to certify you are legal after giving them your ID.

I have a new thing.
If any store asks for my D/L I give them my CCW.
Makes life interesting.
It's gov. issued and it has my picture on it.
What else do you need?

+1

A bartender once laughed at me and threw my ID at me implying he thought it was fake. (I had since shave my face and head). I wasnt laughing. I pulled my CCW license out and asked him if he thought it was fake. I got my beer.
