The AK47(7.62X39) is the traditional AK caliber, and many will suggest that is the route to go. One definite benifit is ammo is available pretty much anywhere.

If I could only have one though, I would pick the AK47. The 5.45X39 round has almost non-existant recoil, is generally inherently more accurate than 7.62X39, and if you are a "tactical" type, the ammo and mags are lighter. One downside, 5.45X39 ammo is a gunshow or internet/mail order only proposition, depending on where you live

Fair price? Depends on what you can/want to spend. A SAR1(7.62X39) or SAR2(5.45X39) will start around 350.00(give or take 20.00), all the way up to full customs and pre-bans that will set you back 700.00 on up.

SAR-2 in 5.45x39 for $329: http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976376791.htm
I just bought another one (he's local for me) and the seller is Gerry Sweet as in Idaho Senator Gerry Sweet (a senator selling guns & ammo out of his garage, I *love* Idaho!...)
I've had both but prefer the 5.45 for lower recoil, less weight & flatter trajectory. If you want optics for your AK check w/Tantal and tell him Tomac sent you: http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/
Good luck and keep us posted!...

Yah Idaho, love it here.
My first day at my new position here (3 years ago) I was talking about guns, and lunch time turned in to a tail gate gun show and BLM shoot.

Just walked across the street and spent lunch time shooting everyone else's guns.:D

RTFM

Go for a Romanian AK (SAR-1) in 7.62x39. Reliable, ammo costs $1.43 a box at local Gander Mountain, 30 round magazines for under $10. Just plain fun to shoot if nothing else & at the price of 7.62x39, no more expensive than shooting a 22. I paid $375 for my Romanian. That's a little high, but a local shop had one on hand. You can still find them in the lower 300's, but from what I've been reading they are no longer being imported. Prices may go up in the near future.

If you want an inexpensive but very well made rifle, go with a Saiga. You can get the 7.62x39 version for about $200 (or less), or the .223 version for 30 to 50 dollars more. The .308 version will cost around $300.

The only real downside is they don't take high capacity magazines unless someone converts them to do so.
