MSRP is well under $2k, but street price has not been in most places.
I want one bad, but I'm not willing to pay $2,500 for it.

Id have to agree. Under 2k for an RFB is fairly common (unless you live in Canada) and I also found mind at about 1500.

As noted, It really depends on what you want.
The AR-10 variants win in terms of ease of modifying, scope mounting, accuracy and a decent trigger. It the only rifle mentioned where upgrading the barrel is a simple option, and there are lots of accessories. Unlike the AR-15 there isn't a standard between AR-10 rifle makers. Most use the same magazine but not all. There is variation in some parts, but by and large they are fairly compatible and there are plenty of add-ons.
The M1a appeals to a more traditional shooter. It still has the best iron sights of any 7.62 battle rifle, and the trigger can be made very crisp. drop in a Rader trigger and you can go under 2 pounds safely if that sort of thing appeals to you. There are now many add-ons for the M1a, but scope mounting can be tricky because the rifle was designed for irons. You'll need some form of cheek piece to get a good stock weld and good mounts are expensive. The base rifle is reasonably accurate, but to get a high level of accuracy gets expensive quickly.
The FAL is a classic battle rifle that is reliable once the gas system is properly set. You want to avoid Remington brass which is thin at the base. If the gas port is set wrong you'll rip the head of the case. Like the M1a, mounting a scope is somewhat problematic. Most of the dust cover mounts are semi-permanent and the scope ends up high. The trigger on the FAL is difficult to improve due to the number of interacting surfaces.
The G3 clones (PTR-91 etc) are delayed blowback rifles with all that implies. Ejection is vigorous and can be hard on brass. The sights are sub optimal, though many like them. The trigger is terrible compared to the other rifles mentioned. Scope mounting is also tricky, although the latest models have corrected this. This seems to be a rifle that engenders strong feelings of either love or hate.
There are a number of other rifles that also meet you criteria, but these are the main military rifles for 7.62x51. Each has a range of accessories and magazines a relatively easy to obtain.

M1A if it were my money. The AR10 would be close behind. Both are accurate and easy to service and clean. The other options are too, those are just my picks.

I would disagree with GunTech's assesment that the M1A has the best iron sights. Shot my PTR alongside an M1A a few weeks ago. Found the front sight blade on the M1A, the top of which slants away from you, tended to catch the sunlight, making it very difficult to establish a consistent sight picture. Both me and my friend who brought the rifle found our groups stringing vertically because of this.
By contrast, we both found that the PTR's diopter iron sights made it very easy to get a consistent sight picture, simply by centering the front sight hood in the aperature and posting the target. Groups were tight and consistent.

Just to antagonize my US friends, I'm going to say buy 4 Norinco M305 M14 clones. Or three and ammo, or two and more ammo.
(Not as attractive as first meets the eye. Semi-auto rifles are limited to 5 shots, so any rifle has to have three more mags.
The concensus of opinion north of the 49th Parallel is the Norincos are very good guns, despite the badmouthing some US gunshops are giving them.

I own an M1A super match as well as an HK91 so my personal preferences are with those two platforms. The MiA is more accurate than my HK91, but the HK is very reliable and would be my go to semi auto. It's too bad the Browning BAR has a limited magazine capacity because I really do like my BAR. It is in .338 and a pleasure to shoot. If it were in .308 and had at least a removable 10 round mag it might very well be my rifle of choice.

Reasonable comments, except the FAL mounts a scope lower than most MBRs I know of. In fact you can remove the rear sight and mount it darn near flush to the rail. Leave the mount in place and easily field strip.
I have seen a $50 trigger job that will surprise you.

I've been drooling over a DPMS .308, just me though. Heard they are quite accurate even out of the box, plus at about 1000$ new, leaves room for optics, mags, and ammo! But an FAL, M1A, and PTR91 all work good too. Roll a dice and pick!
The FNAR is an awesome gun.
I was at Walmart yesterday. They had a DPMS LR308 for < $900. Fits all of those criteria. If your walmart sells guns, they can order it for you.
I would stick with the AR set up. More accessories out there. Better scope mount options than the M1A.

the dpms lr308 is alot of gun for the money , i have the dpms lr308 heavy barrel
it came with 2 20rd mags ,hard case and a 3year warranty for 990 bucks its a tack driver and runs like a top. with optics and a full mag its close to 10 lbs

Darned right. I'm left handed and would really like to get my hands on one of these (the Kel-Tec RFB). But they don't exist. Pixie dust. Dark matter. Unobtanium. Just like most all of their guns.It's a myth! There've been more sightings of Bigfoot than there have of the RFB!
Does the company actually exist? Or is some vast sociological experiment being conducted by Stanford University with Guns and Ammo?
Oh and the answer to the OP's question is about 1/2 of a SCAR Heavy.
