What did you shoot today?

I had to learn to shoot pistols left handed when my right arm was in a brace for 3 months following reconstructive surgery.

A guy here injured his right elbow so he learned to shoot left-handed.
Even after it healed, it was still painful to fire more than a few shots, so he stayed lefty and did very well. But when an IDPA stage called for "weak hand" shooting, he was way ahead of the game for those few shots.

Closest indoor range was closed for lead removal, so I drove another several miles to another indoor range. Tested out the Beretta .32 ACP Model 35 I just bought and practiced with my S&W J-frame 442 .38 Special. Since i got the second lock-free 442 to carry, the lock one is a range gun and I have been dry firing it. Sbot 33 rounds through the Beretta and 50 through the 442. All these are at 5 yards.

Beretta, 9 shots, two handed grip.

442 Left Hand, 5 shots, not sure where shot 5 went ( :D ):

442, right hand, 5 shots:

The Beretta Model 35 had a few failure to feed with LRN but ran fine on FMJ. Also, with the magazine release at the heel and very stiff, it could push a round out when inserting the magazine if I was not careful.

How often to you cycle your SD ammo like that? And then of course it is gun cleaning and oiling time, which is not a bad idea vs a gun just sitting loaded for an indefinite period of time.
I try to remember to do it every 6 months but it usually ends up being a little longer than that. Its probably not necessary to do it that often and its getting more expensive!

Wish I had a private range like that ... < jealous > :)

It's been raining all day so I baked bread, rolls and peanut butter cookies ... Cookies are good but not the same as shooting. 😁 And I could eat cookies and shoot at the same time.

I decided to shoot my Hellcat yesterday. It had been a while since I had shot it. The last time I remember was to re-qualify for my ccp about a month ago. I noticed my group was left of center. Yesterday my nice little group was left of center. The sights are perfectly centered.
I tried to drift the rear to the right, but it didn't budge. Aagh! I need a sight tool.
I looked for my brass, but it was all ejected to parts unknown. Probably behind my row of spare semi tires....aagh!
I like this Hellcat but it has been frustrating.....I think it's the trigger that causes me to shoot left....I just can't get it right.
I'm tempted to trade for something else...?
I like 1911s
I like revolvers.

I just shot the Bull a few times with a gunwriter friend.

I needed reloading advice for:
222Rem
22-250
9.3X62
300 Win Mag
A 25-06 I can't get tamed
A good alternative to Big Game powder for my 30-06 165 gr TSX and 180 Partition loads (the only Big Game I've found was 8 pounders for $220.00 + Hazmat+shipping+sales tax).

I'll be shooting the Valmet 12/222 and Ruger Am Predator 22-250 in a few minutes.

Took a couple of the old Sigs that haven't gotten out in the sun in ages to the range. Had a new 10 round magazine for the P226 (I like to have at least one on hand for each of my double stacks since I got caught the last time) and it fed, fired, tossed and locked open on an empty mag as it should. Also took the P239 since I want to use it as my carry for awhile. Ran one mag through each at 6.5 yards and they both still work.

I've been facing an issue of grouping left of desired POI lately and find it interesting that didn't show up with either Sig. I'll pull the P220 and P227 out of the safe soon and see if they too make me look better than hopeless.

My favorite but often neglected AR. I put about 180rds through it today from 10/25/50 yards. Just messed around and had fun. I put alot of time on a couple carbines and AR pistols with carbine length systems but this one is just a nice soft shooter, easy to stay on target and is the least twangy of my AR's. I really enjoy this one the most, but shoot it the least for whatever reason. IMG_20240126_180118.jpg

I struggle with low and right (lefthanded) with my stricker fired pistols. I really like having a micro compact 9mm or 380 option, but a j frame size revolver in 32, 38, or 357 is a must option IMHO. I don't have the same low/right issue with revolvers....

Don't feel alone. I can take slow deliberate aim with a GI 45 at a target straight away from me and still shoot my toe off. We have a love-hate relationship.

Finally...after almost a month I made it back to the range. Was excited to get out as I was going to shoot the Ruger M77/RSI in .223 for the first time since I bought it back in 20 or 21. Decided since it was .223 day I'd also bring the old New England Firearms (NEF) Survivor (their designation...not mine) in .223. It's been a long time (years and years) since that rifle has seen the light of day. Basically wanted to compare how it would stand up to the RSI...my version of a $210 vs a $880 (+/-) gun shoot out.

I flew out of the neighborhood down the main arterial feeder at 75 MPH with all the windows down in the truck looking like a Yeti with mange with a large amount of dog hair coming out of the side windows. I was doing that because the corgis have started to shed and I needed to clean the interior out some.

A few minutes later I was at the range where it was 40 degrees and overcast with zero wind. The range at noon had 5 shooters. One, a friend who lives in my neighborhood. Got my favorite lane just as they called a cease fire and set up the bench and target (at 50 yards) and got the chrono squared away. As always happens it usually needs to be readjusted at least once and I couldn't do that as shooting had started. Instead, I picked a spot on the target and fired 3 rounds just to see where the NEF was hitting. Was pretty much dead center but about 3.5 inches low. I forgot exactly what distance it was zeroed at. At one time it was my primary coyote gun in the late 90's and prob was set up to be dead on around 200-250 yards.

Rounds I was shooting:

Of note: Hornady advertises 3249 FPS for an unknown barrel length.

For the RSI the average FPS was 3072 FPS

For the NEF the Average FPS was 3125 FPS

.223 NEF Survivor on deck. I forgot how much I like shooting this budget offering. Wearing a Bushnell Banner 6X18X50

Next was the RSI in .223

After confirming I was on paper and adjusting windage I dialed in the Leupold 1X4 Pig Plex at 50 yards and then moved to 100 yards. This (Top Target) was my first and best group at that distance for the RSI.

I forgot to bring my adjustable rifle rest and had to use a sandbag on the stock that just wasn't the right size I needed. I worked on it for each shot of the best group but became frustrated and stopped using it. As a result my last group opened up considerably.

For comparison: this was a 9-shot group at 100 yards a few months back from a Ruger Ranch using 5.56. The gun was sitting in my rifle rest and was wearing a 1X4X30mm.

All in all it was a fun 2.5 hours and I'm looking forward to going back next Friday with the rifle rest to see if those groups will improve.

Lastly, while I forgot to take pics the NEF did in fact shoot a couple of groups that beat the RSI's best for the day. In the picture with two targets a couple of those orange dots had two holes under them. Specifically the ones directly above the center square and just off to the right and above the largest group of dots.

In the RSI's defense the NEF was wearing A LOT more glass. That made a difference at that distance.

Think I'll order some more of that ammo from Midway. Seems to shoot well in both guns.

We do get some duds in the buckets but it mostly it's dropped rounds & reloader screw ups that they don't want to pull themselves. It's ok I'll pull them & keep the components.
I was not aware of dud buckets at the range. Last time I had some duds I handed them to one of the workers on my way out the door. Maybe not all ranges have dud buckets.

We have them because we have steel burn cans to burn off the used paper targets, target backing cardboards & sticks to cut down on the amount of waste we have to pay to have hauled off. And we don't want live ammo in the barrels.

You don't want this to happen? :D
