What do we do for a living?

Currently High School Special Education/Social Studies teacher. Only been doing it a few months but I love it.

Just prior to that my full-time gig was as a Mental Health Worker in a local psychiatric hospital (first as a float, then with the Center for Eating Disorders). After leaving as full-time (to start teaching) I was per diem- part time/as needed. Last Sunday was my last shift but I'm still on the books so I can come back every summer when school is out.

I hope to add part-time grad student to that, possibly as early as January (I will first go for a masters in Special Education, then possibly another masters in clinical or experimental psychology, then hopefully a Ph.D. in Educational or Developmental Psychology). If I don't become a therapist/psychologist as originally planned (looking less likely because of the real and opportunity costs of leaving my job for a year or two for the internships) I hope to become a psychology or education professor or an educational administrator (Principal Chaim- sounds good right).

Prior jobs, I've done a little of everything (sometimes 2 at a time): soldier (not for long though, darned ankle), sales (cars and houses, retail- clothing, and furniture), pizza delivery (often while also doing something else), sub making, McDonalds (in high school), retail level banking (teller and account manager), retail management for a major dept. store chain, substitute teaching, insurance adjuster.

In keeping with the "what do you drive"/"buy American" subtopic that's develped:
I currently drive a Korean made 2004 Hyundai Sonata. However, I am in the market and American companies or American made cars are on the top of my list:
-Toyota Camry (made in USA)- Even most of the corporate money stays in the US with Toyota USA. Besides, I'm more worried about the autoworkers than the corporate guys (an accountant is laid off it is a short learning curve to transfer his skills to another industry since his skills are transferable, depending upon the specific job, a worker on the assembly line is laid off and she needs a complete retraining to go with another industry).
-Mercury Milan
-Chrysler PT Cruiser
-Dodge Caliber (have to love that name)
-Ford Focus (Mexican made but US company, but if I go this way it will probably be used anyway- reliable car, I drive a lot of miles so 20K on the odometer is no big deal, low resale value and a lot on the market)

I'm also starting to shop motorcycles (goal- license by end of next summer, own one by summer 2008), but the U.S. made Harley is too expensive (but otherwise my first choice) so I'll probably go with a Japanese made Honda or Kawasaki cruiser.

And I drive either a 97 Astro or a 2000 Malibu. Maybe a pickup in the future, but it will be used, for sure.

So far I've only spent $100 on my gun collection. After my handgun safety class in 2 weeks that will change.

Program Director for a adolescent male group home and FT graduate student (MS in Counseling Psych). Most of "my" kids are graduates of residential treatment centers (indoor or outdoor) that are transitioning home, into independent living, or into a foster home.

Been working for the same company for 5.5 years and have worked my way up from entry level to middle management. Except for the pay, I would rather be entry-level again. I have also thought about changing careers altogether until I finish my degree. Pretty burned out due to my current position.

In the past....
Convenience store clerk
Mall Ninja (Security Guard)
Loss Prevention
retail sales
factory/plant work
fast food

I drive a 1997 Honda CRV with 220K miles on it and we just bought a 2007 Hyundai Sonata for my wife.
The Hyundai was built right here in Alabama by Alabama workers. The Honda is a tool and I KNOW that if I do my part, it will last another 100K miles. I don't KNOW that will happen with any "American" car out there. Want my business? Make it easy for me to own it after 100K miles and give me good service at the dealership.
My wife was VERY Honda loyal until the maintenance people at the local dealership and the sales guy pissed her off. We ended up going a mile down the road and getting treated very well by the Hyundai people.
