What "floats your boat" when it comes to guns?

I was twelve years old when the Assault Weapons Ban was passed back in 1994. It was an influential age for me. I was learning to shoot centerfire rifles, passing hunter's safety, and killing my first deer. It was at about this time that I began sleeping with a loaded semi-automatic rifle next to my bed. The realization that people thousands of miles away didn't want me to own that Mini-14 was like a slap in the face. Spending the next decade under the shadow of that legislation polarized me in the gun control debate and I have been obsessed with obtaining as many "assault weapons" as I could get my hands on. So my interest lies in what the antis don't want me to have; ARs, M1s, and high capacity handguns. I have an M1 Garand, an M1A, an Colt 6960 CCU, a Glock 20 (also have a .30-30 and a M700 7mm Rem Mag for hunting). Next on the list is a AR-10, and JRA M14, a SIG P226 or CZ P-07.

I like them all, from a muzzle loading flintlock pistol to beltfed machineguns, some other cool stuff on both sides but lots in the middle too.

ruger single action revolvers. their heft and sound and mechanics seem more...purposeful. to me, they are indeed “elegant weapons for a more civilized age.”

then again, there is something to be said for an m60.

I like interesting firearms. Only accurate guns are interesting. These days, a LOT of guns are very accurate.

I'm into Lever Action Rifle lately, Marlin, Henry, Rossi' & Browning I have bought all in the last four months.

For me, it’s all about short barrels. Snubby revolvers, 18-22” barrel shotguns, and carbine rifles.

Handguns, anything hammer fired. I own one striker, P320 and it just sits in the safe. My preference is SAO, so needless to say, my favorites are 1911’s. As I get older, starting to prefer the 9mm more and more.

While I still enjoy shooting my 45’s and 10mm, I find that I shoot my 38S and 9mm the most.

Recently started getting into Lever’s. Picked up a couple (3) Henry’s, Marlin 336, Taylor’s 357 and the latest was a Winchester 1892 Deluxe in 44 mag. This one happed to be in White. It is now up at Turnbull for them to do their magic.

So both myself and GF, who loves to shoot, can shoot together, picked her up a Henry 22, which she loves. For X-mas, bought her a Uberti 1866 in 38 spec. Perfect for her to shoot.

I like 4" Smith and Wesson revolvers. For the most part it's the hunt for them that I enjoy. I enjoy going to the gun shop, and gun shows, looking at guns, talking about guns, seeing people I know, and meeting new ones.

I don't actually shoot much anymore. Most of the guns I've got now, I've either never fired, or haven't fired in some time. I still enjoy doing it, but just don't seem to find the time. I like to get to the range when it first opens, and get in and out before the crowd arrives. Once the crowd gets there, I don't even bother, so there's a pretty small window each day.

A few years ago I found a Mossberg 46m in very good condition. Though I was never into rim fire it opened a new world to me and I enjoy the gun shows looking for those older pre 1960 rim fire riflles with peep sights. Love shooting them, they're affordable for me and the examples out there are numerous. The wife likes them too, and that's always a plus. I'm up to about a dozen examples of various makers, Mossbergs, Winchester, Stevens/Savage. Love the Remington line of .22lr also. I enjoy my bigger calibers but they all have a job, a specific use. The rim fires are a hobby and help keep up my shooting skills with out spending a ton on ammo.

As far as what “floats my boat” the answer is wood and metal. Plastic..errr...polymer doesn’t do a thing for me. We live on our farm off a dirt road fairly deep into the woods, so my firearms are tools that get used, and they get used frequently. I stay sharp with all of them.

Full disclosure. I do have a Ruger MK3 that doesn’t have any wood on it, but it’s just such a fun little gun. It’s also my only semi auto handgun. But I am considering putting wood grips on it.

I like bigger, heavy all steel guns the best. SS, blued, nickeled, it's all good. I only have six revolvers, but I have a lot of semiautos, most of them all steel with a few alum framed ones in the safe, with even a couple of cheap polymer guns. IMHO, pretty much all polymer guns should be cheap. Strangely, the cheapest of those polymer guns, Taurus PT111 Gs's, SAR CM9 G2(The best of all the polymer guns I've ever owned), Sar K2P, and Taurus 809 have been the best of all the plastic fantastics. Toys to me, I don't care if they get banged up, and if one was to break, oh well. My metal guns are another story. I don't mind honest wear, but nicking them up kind of upsets me.

Right now, I'm fighting the urge to jump on an unfired Sig 226 SSE, it hits all my buttons, solid stainless, wood grips, a Sig 226, night sites, etc, and it's at a good price. I already bought myself the parts to build a monster PC as my Christmas present to myself and my birthday present a few months ago was a new car, but I have the cash to buy it and it's one of "one of these days" guns. I actually had one that I sold as soon as I bought it for a nice profit years ago, and wished I had kept. but a $250 instant profit was hard to resist. I'm weakening as I type this..

I have followed the road to ruin and now wind up drawing 4 leaf clovers with a anschutz .22.

I find that I have a strong preference for semi-auto hammer-fired pistols and bolt-action rifles. As far as shotguns, I just never got into them. I have one double and that is it.

In the rifles I have changed a bit. Even though they are not as good, on paper, I prefer wood stocks. That is a bit of a change for me.

I'm rather flexible and have a lot of handguns and a few rifles. As long as they are of reasonable quality I like them. Don't have to be many thousands of $ each but no junk either. I like straight wall pistol calibers the most as they are easy to reload, which is where most of the fun is...

"What Floats My Boat" in no particular order...

What I like in Rifles: Mannlicher stocks on anything but especially on Ruger#1's. Deeply blued steel. Wood stocks. Lever actions and bolts in general. Any rifle action in a straight wall pistol caliber. Well preserved Savage 99's and Winchester 88's. Highwall/Low walls. Ruger semi auto carbines in .44 mag. Rifles in .358 Winchester.

Shotguns: Anything with an upland designation i.e. English stock/shorter barrel. 20 gauges in particular in that configuration.

Handguns: Revolvers in double and single action. Anything from Dan Wesson out of Monson Mass. Bird head grips on Ruger SA's. SA's with short barrels (4 5/8ths and under) and color case hardening. DA's with long barrels (4 inches and up). DA's with full length underlug. Auto's with DA decock.

Black Powder: Almost anything percussion with a wood stock. Kentucky/ Pennsylvania/Schutzen rifles in particular. No in-lines need apply.

Misc: Fire blued and (tuned) screws. Full length brass scopes on period correct vintage rifles. Quality LEATHER slings. Quality sights.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something but this is a solid start from my end to answering the OP's question.

Hi...
My interests vary a bit.
I like revolvers...I have a good many from Ruger single actions, Colt, S&W and Dan Wesson double actions and Uberti Cimarron single actions.
I carry 1911s...45ACP. I have a couple.
I have a handful of other handguns ranging from a cheap but accurate and durable Kimel Ind. .22/22Mag through a S&W M& P 40 and a German Luger WWII bring back war trophy.
I have a couple of lever action rifle, several bolt action rifle and a few shotguns.
Recently I have been acquiring Sako bolt action rifles.

Pretty widespread interests...
Oh...I also, along with my son's help, built my first AR-15 in .223Wylde.

Good thing I am retired or I would never have enough time to shoot them all.

Finely crafted shotguns of an O/U or SxS nature, come first, K, L and N frame Smiths come second

I have always loved guns and I like many different kinds. I have never really considered my self a collector even though I have a collection. I am a shooter and a hunter and a firearms enthusiast.

I was raised as a hunter and shooter. As an adult I became a shooter and hunter. I still love hunting but I shoot far more often and my wife, daughter and many of my friends also come along. When I hunt it's typically just me and my 2 boys.

Recently I have been adding a fewAR's to the safe but also am also into lever guns and other hunting rifles. For handguns I'm a sucker for 1911's but I also dig HK's. I like plastic as much as blued steel and walnut.

Generally like modern day "assault" aka sporting rifles and all stainless steel pistols. PTRs, AKs, ARs, CZ rifles and pistols, 1911s, revolvers... Some I buy to just look at, and don't shoot because I don't want the wear on the finish it to decrease the value. Others I carry or occasionally shoot...

Sometimes it the history behind the guns that gets me going.
