What makes a gun "fun" to shoot?

Thanks for the answers my friends.

I am currently getting together a bunch of friends who will be bringing their
assorted handguns and rifles to the range, it may be mid next month. I will get some more experience.

Currently, anything that fires is "fun to shoot" for me, and for the numerous
reasons as listed in this thread. Any size, type, caliber, handgun or rifle.
I am at this point a non-discriminating shooter. With experience and practice I am sure to develop a more cultured palate.

cheers, ab

Most fun to shoot (My humble 1/50th of $1)

Inexpensive to shoot...hard to beat .22LR bricks..less than $10 per 500. Ammo that is over $20 per 20 rounds just doesn't fit this decsription.

Reliable...goes bang! every time

Accurate...has to be better than me at putting the lead part in target center.

Recoil...enough to let you know that it went off, but not enough to make you say "D*** THAT REALLY HURTS ! ! ! "

Really can't imagine too many things that fit this bill, other than maybe some of the Communist Bloc Mil-Surps (SKS/AK, etc) in 7.62x39 calibre. Usually, can find this ammo for $40 or less per 500.

To the above I'd add the following:

1. Huge magazines- I like shooting more than loading mags.

2. Mags that are not painful to load.

Being able to let off at least 10 deafening rounds, and when your done, the only noise heard is maniacal evil laughter on a grinning face. :D

A gun that makes a hardcore operator who always manages to suppress any emotion grin like an idiot is a fun gun!!!! :D

In no particular order for me:

* Enough recoil to know somethings happening but not enough to cause discomfort.

* Accuracy,

* Cheap ammo

* Comfotable to use (no sharp edges, easy to load etc..)

* Good looks (yes I admit it  )

* History or current "status". Histories easy enough to explain, like its funner to shoot a genuine WWII Luger than a 1980's copy. "Status" a bit harder, by that I mean a gun used by elite military units, high speed low drag operators, movie characters such as Dirty Harry etc... Not that I would ever play a bit of Walter Mitty at the range ... ;)

All the guns I've shot have been fun save one. this brute of an anti-ergonomic rifle called a Hakim (IIRC).

So for me if it's not a Hakim it's fun!

Oh, and a makazine where the feed lips won't draw blood. Or are too large to fit between fingernail and skin.

action barbi, all firearms are fun to shoot. Some are just more pleasant than others. Generally speaking, a gas operated CF rifle is much more fun to shoot than a bolt or single action. The felt recoil is less.
SMG's are extremely fun to shoot, as are MG's in general. Trust me, if you get the chance to legally shoot any SMG or machine gun, jump on it.
Having said all that, I don't much care about felt recoil, the calibre or anything else. I'm more interested in shooting the firearm. I like to be able to say, "Yes, I've shot one of those." I think it's the historian in me.
The best advice I can give you is it isn't the firearm. It's the people you get to shoot with, but if one of 'em has something you've never fired, ask. Even if it's a .458Win Mag.

What makes a gun "fun" to shoot changes for me depending on what my goals are for that day's shooting.

Sometimes it's hits at 100 yds, sometimes its exploding plastic soda bottles full of water, sometimes it's introducing a newcomer to shooting. However the way I can tell if it was a "fun" gun to shoot is by the shipeating grin while I'm doing it. (NOTE: I spelled the adjective describng grin that way because this is a family accessible site.)

I'll second the MKII accuracy thing being tops as far as having fun.
That gun brings a smile to my face every single time I shoot it!

I really enjoy shooting my Glock 17. Low recoil, accurate, reliable. Shoot shoot shoot. It is like shooting a .22 but you are sending something substantial toward the target. Really, if you have never shot a G17, you are missing out.

Fun to shoot means that it is both accurate AND that you can hit with it. For instance, a 4 pound 50 BMG might very well be accurate, but how well you gonna shoot it?
Second is that it has to have some power and recoil, but not too much. BB guns are fun to start with, but no one sticks with them over rimfires. At the same time, you don't want beat-the-snot-outta-you recoil. Just a gentle rap or push is enough.
Also pertinent to this discussion is the cost of ammo. For instance, a 45 LC may be fun to shoot, but unless you reload for it or are undeniably wealthy, you won't be able to afford to shoot it more than twice a year.
Finally, my own fun guns include my SIG P-225, CZ-452, and Bulgarian AK. The Finn M39 is also high on my list of fun guns, at least shooting kneeling or offhand. From the bench, it ain't quite so fun.

Lately, I have been having a lot of fun with an 1851 Navy repro in .44

If you haven't tried one, do yourself a favor and try a blackpowder cap and ball revolver.;) I am hooked.

I also agree with others, a brick of .22 and some cans = fun!

A gun that's fun to shoot fits my hand easily, balances well, and is deadly accurate. Which means it's probably a Freedom Arms revolver.

Q.: What makes ag un "fun to shoot"?

A. All of the above:D

The measure of the machine is the pleasure it gives you to operate it!

Obviously, it's pretty objective, but it is what makes you happy - Pride of ownership, torque and recoil, power, workmanship, panache, cachet, accuracy, historical significance, general cool - it all counts, but how much is up to you.

Be happy, don't worry, enjoy yourself - we can't be happy for you, you gotta do dat for yo'self, mon:evil:
