I have an itch to buy another toy, not sure exactly what to get. I have looked at a lot of options in the last week and just can't decide. I have plenty of handgun right now from Colt 1911's to Glocks to S&W revolvers. I have target guns, range guns, carry guns etc. I think I want to spend $500-1000 b/c I looked at a Sig p210 and just couldn't justify $2,100 for a range toy, especially since I need another/bigger safe and could use the funds better added to my safe fund.

Do you reload? If not I'd look at reloading equipment - I sprang for all Dillon stuff in 2003 and have never regretted it. If you already reload or don't want to, I'd save for that safe you need/want.

Second the notion of taking up reloading and putting more money into the safe fund.

I already have $ put away for the safe, I use my friends Dillon reloader, but we have had a problem finding powder in our area (just north of Chicago).

A high quality .22lr? Something like an old Smith 41, or a decent Hi standard, or a Smith K-frame in .22lr. If it were me, and I had all my functional bases covered, I'd look for old interesting firearms that aren't being made today. If the need for a current production model handgun comes up, I'd buy one at that time. If not, grabbing an older well built model now will give you a good firearm to enjoy and should also be an investment that doesn't lose a lot of money. If there is a need that isn't covered, I'd buy the best firearm for that need but if just for fun, an older model (of whatever action type and caliber) would be my start.

Powder is a problem everywhere.

Anyway...I have had similar thoughts about wanting a new gun from time to time. I am coming to the conclusion that a person should seriously ask themselves WHY such thoughts are springing up. What want are you really trying to fill? Without that knowledge it is very difficult to rationalize properly.

In my case it recently occurred to me that if you strip out all the antiques and old military guns, my collection is made up of five categories of handgun. 22lr, BUG, Compact CC, full size service, and hand cannon. However, the proportions aren't balanced. I have one buckmark, one itty bitty BUG (e.g. a NAA mini magnum), one smallish CC gun (e.g. a cZ-82), four service size guns (e.g. G22, S&W M10, 1911 .45, 1911 .22TCM/9mm), and one hand cannon (e.g. Ruger Alaskan .454).

One of my private goals for the millennium is to balance and smooth that curve. I can't really bring myself to get rid of any of the full size handguns I still have, so that probably means bumping up my inventory on the small and large end. See, now that is rationalization done right.

I suggest something similar. Fiddle around with your categories until it looks like you have an unmet need.

I looked at a Sig p210 and just couldn't justify $2,100 for a range toy..

You will be hard pressed to find a better range only gun, that can compete with the 210 under the price.

Do you already have a 22 revolver? A S&W M17 or M18 would be nice.

If not what about another 1911? Ruger is making a Very nice 1911 as is Remington which aren't too expensive.

I had the same dilemma once,,,

I had the same dilemma once,,,
I solved it through budsgunshop website.

I used their search to narrow down to a single caliber of handgun,,,
Clicked the search button and filtered that list by price,,,
There were then hundreds of guns to drool over.

It didn't take long to find several candidates,,,
Then a bit of practical research,,,
The next thing you know,,,
I owned a CZ-75B.

Hunting and choosing is a large part of the fun.

I don't understand the the question...really!

I just don't get how a person can't figure it out for themselves?

I am in a similar situation that I got all bases covered, but got the itch to buy a new gun. I spent that new gun money on ordering a few new exotic skin holsters for my main 2 carry guns and a couple of BBQ guns. I have had a few exotics before, but I was able to add a few more. I will post pics of my current and new ones in a few weeks when they get here. I will soon have holsters in Ostrich, Elephant, Alligator, Stingray, Lizard, Frog, and horsehide. New addiction

Russ, if you go out and just impulse buy like I sometimes do you kind of run out of ideas. archangelcd, I have a colt 1991a1 that I let a gunsmith loose on and is just about a "race gun" minus the optics and compensator, also have a colt gold cup match, and a few more 1911's including kimbers. I have been wanting a .23/32 3" bbl for a while (or an early .22 j frame) but all the nice ones I've found seem to bring $800-1k around here. I do spend a lot, maybe too much on guns, I do have disposal income, but this time I'm trying to limit myself. I like everyone's suggestions on a .22 k frame, I also don't currently have a BHP, maybe an early internal extractor one if I can find one. Those are all on my radar, just haven't found nice ones yet.

My always looking for list includes:
S&W 317 .22lr
S&W .22lr jframes (2-4" bbl)
S&W .22lr kframes
BHP early FNB marked internal extractor
Medusa revolver (just because)
S&W ASP
Walther ppk (pre '68)
S&W .460 in 2 or 4" bbl (because I'm crazy)
HK P7

Now I know much of the above will not fall into my under $1k criteria, hense my question. Also a few I've wanted that were current cause my LGS to laugh b/c they're impossible to get (keltec pmr30).

I guess I'm just trying to get ideas from you guys for some instant gratification buy. I don't even want to get started on long guns as this is not the correct thread.

Also just never could warm up to single action revolvers.

I do have a C&R

Thanks for all your input so far everyone!
Elvis

Since you don't want to go with a 1911 I stick with my other suggestions for a S&W M17 or M18. A .22 K frame is a great revolver to own and shoot...

How about buy something "cheap?"
Bud's has lots of selections under $400 that are worth picking up...why should every purchase be a wallet sapper?

It would seem to me then, anything would do. You do not desire a particular gun or platform, just a gun, and apparently any one that is validated by your peers. In that case you should set up a poll and buy the one that comes in first place. That way you will make the most folks happy with their choice.

S&W 617. At least that is what I am planning on. A nice old model 17 would be great too but I like the stainless finish for durability so I don't have to feel bad carrying it around.

Or, heres an idea.

Since you really dont NEED anything, and are just trying to scratch a "I need to buy something" itch, why not spend the money on something of permanent value and help out a family in need, or donate to a cause you believe in?

I learned a while ago, that this whole "Gun thing" is a lot about "BUY BUY BUY" and very little about anything of real significance.

Its about running around, getting scared into "BUY BUY BUY" by some polititian or another, of some "SHTF" headgame, and the solution is always the same.

"BUY BUY BUY".

My advice to you is, resist.

Instead of "BUY BUY BUY" make your motto "SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT" what you already have.

You say you have "Plenty" for yourself, instead of tossing another onto your stack of riches, why not help someone out who doesnt have such wealth?

Just a thought.

Good point.

Since you mentioned Glock; do you have the Glock 42? Great little CC gun as well as a real good shooter. Performs very well with reloads and is reasonably priced.
Academy Sports has them listed right now for $429 in select stores.

Personally I think folks just like to bounce some of this stuff off of other like minded people.....it's kinda fun to go to a Discussion Forum and invite discussion about things others might want to discuss. It's an opportunity for fun and enlightenment, for sharing and brain storming with folks online that we like to hang out with. :)

That said I'll second the opinion to have a look at yer current safe and consider reloading stuff. I have all the guns on my "Bucket List" save for 2 of them which are not available at the moment. So, I'm gonna expand my reloading bench with some cool stuff. Better/cooler guns means better/more precision ammunition to shoot in them!
