What is a 28 ga good for? (a.k.a. - Dad goes shopping)

I see that Browning has brought out 2 new Cynergys in 20ga and 28 gauge. It shows it with a 30" barrel. Looks slim and nicer than the 12 gauge version.

I've handled these Cynergy's .
I didn't like them, I knew that from just looking at them. Then I shouldered some...err...umm...

NO thanks. Gimmee a OLDer Citori, I'll put the Pachmyer Decelerator with the leather on it. Blue & Wood, Character & Soul for me please.

I use 28 ga. Shotguns for felling targets and game.

I Don't use a shotgun to gain entry to Buck Rogers, or Star Wars Geek meets.

The trigger is lightly checkered and still smooth.

I still can't do a pic of the whole gun, but I'm getting better with the close-ups. This is the chamber end of the barrels.

And one of the grouse on the bottom.

In the case, looking a little washed out. I think I'm doing pretty well for a beginner with a Nikon CoolPix 2100 on a cloudy day.

Next to a 12 ga. 870 Express, both with 28-inch barrels. I put a straight edge across the butts, so the LOP really is that different.

That is a nice shotgun JohnBT. :)

Steve will be happy to help break her in for you, shucks I'll be happy to help break her in, you won't even have to supply the shells. ;)

Thanks, I'll tell my father you like it. The honest to goodness truth is he bought this gun because of the feel and the fit - he really isn't into fancy. He didn't like the 28 ga. Browning XS I'd handed him because his face was too close to his thumb, but his eyes lit up when he shouldered this one. I shouldered it and we stood there looking at each other and grinning. Then the questions poured out starting with "What is it?" Eventually we looked at the price tag. Oh well, that's life. To quote Mr. Jewell's answer about why his triggers cost so much: "They cost what they cost."

I just called my folks to say hi and he mentioned that I can bring it back next week so his brother can see it. They're only 100 miles away, so I'm back and forth quite a bit.

If we can work out the travel arrangements you're all certainly welcome to shoot it and I'll buy the shells. It's amazing how much ammo I can afford when I don't have to buy the gun.

And the next time I do some gun pics I think I'll see about getting some cheap portable lights and using a tripod. At least I had a spare set of rechargable batteries.

John - your pics are getting extremely nice!!! :)

That is one VERY handsome shotgun - anyone would be proud to own it - handle it even.

Tripod John - get one! It makes things a lot easier, particularly if you have enough manual control on camera to use slow speeds with small apertures.

Also - if you have any options for white balance other than ''auto'' - just use some cheapie lights - small tungsten floods will do - standing ones or clip-ons ... tho the light is low color temp (yellow region) - if you can set white balance then you'll be good to go.

Can't get over that gun (lust - envy - lascivious grin) :p

I shouldered it and we stood there looking at each other and grinning. Then the questions poured out starting with "What is it?
- Priceless!! :)

Enjoy these times and moments, they don't last.

In my case - I never had them with my dad.

Now I bugged the daylights out of a Uncle, some other folks I adopted as MY Mentors and Elders. I recall being Six years old and shooting a Gov't Model of 1911...I was helping Gunny. I was having a ball - so excited..."Gunny-What is this again?" :D Only person that has probably ever asked that question from a Gunny that did not have to drop and give twenty...

Shotguns..."This one I shoot really well" . The fellow responded - "Ought to - it is a Perazzi MX8".

I guess this explains why I try to pass forward and allow myself to be "adopted" by kids. Why I get a kick out of "assiting" and grinning with folks of all ages...

Larry will tell ya...

Sure Larry and Sandy are enjoying a new purchase - I get a kick when I hear how Larry's kids are enjoying it already. I wait for the Grandkids turn....

Too many victims...err...folks I know.

Yeah steve! i KNOW!!! lol

comments that came to mind in reading this thread.

The Khan 28ga i have is one of the best shooting shotguns i've ever had the pleasure of shooting, esp amoung the members of that group that were priced under $1K. but i DID have the misfortune to have both of the chokes i had installed crack lengthwise. so far this problem seems to have been remedied, but i still have less than 100 rounds through the gun since the replacement tubes came in. over all i love the gun and how it points, fits both me and my wife etc wonderful little gun and so far one of the best $400 purchases i've made.

Ammo, in my general area i have found only three places that have large quanities of 28ga AA or STS loads on hand, one charges around $7.50 a box, the gander Mountain nearest me had cases for $39 (so 3.90 a box), and the third i have not checked prices at as I rarely go there (American Shooting Centers) as i have all the Skeet and trap (range) facilities i regularly need 20mins from home and at half the price.

you and your dad enjoy that gun now, i'm all jealous

Thanks everyone. I'm going to pass all of this along to my father when I return his shotgun.

P95Carry - I'm pleased you noticed. Thirty-five years ago I used to shoot a lot of film and thought I'd forgotten how to trip a shutter. I was surprised how well the pics turned out, but of course the secret is to take a lot of pics and only show the few good ones. I didn't know a $125 digital camera would do more than snapshots using just a flash and ceiling lights - I guess I should read the rest of the manual and get a tripod and lights.
