S&W Model 18 :)

I don't have one *yet* (money sufficient is now in the kitty, though, and I'm looking for an acceptable bargain), but the 617 has my eye. I wonder if by the time I find the perfect 617 (new? low miles?), Ruger will shock me by bringing out a comparable DA .22 ...

And hmm ... 617 in 4"? 6"? Wish I could get a discount for getting both!

I've been waiting for a DA/SA Ruger for a long time. When they announced the Single 10, I was disappointed to say the least.

Hate to spend that much $$$ on a S&W, but options are few and far between.

For me it's a toss up between my Single Six and my NEF R92 ( which is tough as nails).

Here is my collection of .22's - all S&W:

The first, bought new 9/08 and a 4" x10 617, quickly became my favorite revolver. I immediately ordered some Ahrends cocobolo retro target grips and finished them in a homebrew oil finish. I replaced the front sight with a HiViz #SW617 fiber optic sight and the the hammer leaf and strain screw with a Wolff spring and replacement Allen head SS setscrew, adjusted for reliable ignition +1/4 turn - then blue Loctited in place. Great trigger - best of my .22's. Ultimately, I bought a DS-10 speedloader & baseplate for it:

I bought the 63/317 J-frame sized 8-shot DS-10 speedloader and baseplate for my 5" 63, bought as new from a friend's estate 8/09. I did some work on the trigger, but the new 3" 63 I bought 11/10 was better than it - and right out of the box, too. Both got S&W Accessories ($43!) '60 Pro' grips - the no longer available 5"-er got a too-long HiViz sight (Good news - it hit coincident AOA/POI at 12-15yd - no rear sight adjustment needed.), while the 3" 63 came equipped with one. The newness hasn't worn off the 3" 63 - it's a fun revolver. I even got a S&W Accessories 3" J-frame OWB leather holster ($65 + s/h.) for the 3" 60 Pro (holstered below - fits either nicely.) and my 3" 63, alongside.

So, which is my favorite? For a range-only gun - the 617. For range plinking and possible woods carry - the 3" 63. Heck, you'd have to be picky to not be happy with any of the three! Yes, S&W still makes fine revolvers, IL or not. The one thing I cannot over-emphasize - get a good DA-capable .22 revolver - and do so sooner rather than later. Say goodbye to some old firearm friends you don't use so much... I sure did - had to in order to afford these .22's. - and I haven't missed them! I would sure miss the .22's...
