what would be everyones, go to rifle.

My AR-10 .308. Decent magazine capacity. Would be enough to take any game in north America. May swap the 18" barrel for a 20" just to get a tiny bit extra performance out of it.

For me it'd be my Winchester 94 30-30

Others I'd be comfortable with would be; SKS, Mini 14, Winchester 92, Marlin 1894, Marlin 336.

am curious what everyone would call a go to rifle, to throw in the truck , use for predators, both 4 and 2 legged , for hunting sometimes, in your area/
I don't really have a "go to" rifle. Now I'm thinking I should get one.
Thanks, OLDE RETIRED COASTIE!!! Just a few days ago my wife and I were in our favorite gun store in Idaho Falls, and I was trying to think up a reason (an excuse) for buying another rifle. Thanks to your starting this thread, I now have that "reason." :D
BTW, I'm thinking 300 Blackout AR maybe.

As long as I didn't need to shoot distance, it would be a choice between two. It will be ether my Hungarian AMD,

Or my short barreled AR .300 Blackout

Both are very easy to carry & easy to move with through tight woods. They both shoot about the same out to 150 yds & they are compact in case I need to pack it away.

Finding a go to rifle is difficult question to answer for me. But of what I have in my collection, if I am providing overwatch it would easily be my 30-06, if I am fending off an invasion my RRA, If I am in the woods hunting my 30-30, if I am hunting hogs my 300 blackout. Each of my firearms kind of have their own niche depending on the job.

The Mini-14 is not as bad as some people claim. Here's my target from a thread on reloading for it:

index.php

This is at 50 yards, squares are 1", so those groups work out to 3 or 4 MOA. It's no benchrest rifle, wouldn't be the top choice for small varmints, and I'd even want better for hunting deer at 300 yards, but it seems like it would be adequate for a lot of other things the 223 cartridge is suited for. Honestly, I'd bet there's a lot of people who couldn't shoot a similarly-priced AR any better. I've been told that it's possible to get a ~$1K AR to shoot sub-MOA, and I believe it, but doubt there are many truck-gun situations where I could hold sub-MOA.

I've got to believe the consensus that AR's are more accurate, but I think the Mini-14's accuracy should be represented fairly. There could be worse ones out there, but it would be a shame if people only judged them on the worst examples.

You're right, in my experience its far worse.

My dad bought me a Remington 300 magnum when I was 14 years old and eligible to hunt big game in Wyoming.
Two weeks later, I killed a bull elk. Never have needed anything else.
I have other rifles including an M-1, a trapdoor 45-70, and a black rifle from my LEO days. The magnum will go my grandson and my Dad’s Winchester model 70 300 magnum will go to my son.

Well the last I'd sell would be a Sako Forester .308: good for most any hunting purpose short of moose in heavy timber, I suppost....will do nicely for predators out to 250 yds with lighter weight bullets, and equally good for two-legged threats close or far. Excess penetration would have to be considered, but good handloading with varmint weight bullets could potentially overcome that handicap. Too, cast light weight bullets make inexpensive practice a possibility.

A 2nd anniversary present from my bride in '72, it'll do for me...Best Regards, Rod

That's a beauty. Love the short scope on it too.

that little Ruger PCC is flat out amazing. I have yet to miss a shot with it. Love the little sucker.

The Ruger PCC is amazing. Feeds anything, super accurate with HPs, very nice price.
At this point in my life it’s my go to.
That’s why I picked my PC Carbine as well. It was the first gun I thought when reading the OP.

If I had four or five grand I didn't need and the patience to wait for a two-stamp gun I might go with an MP5. SBR'd and suppressed, natch.

My do it all (admittedly not a good choice for the local elk) is a Daniel Defense 16” 5.56 with a high quality LPVO and BUIS. 77 grain HPBT sing out of her with good precision and lethality and cheap(er) fmj reloads work great for practice.

Target is 300y prone in some pretty difficult wind.

Ive been thinking about what I would use as a go-to rifle. Have been thinking about that very same thing the past few days.

Probably gonna go 6.5 Grendel SBR. Grendel is just so efficient from a short barrel and Ill be able to pop the pins and then simply throw it in a backpack to take anywhere and do anything with.

Is either that or a longer 6mm ARC. Im just waiting on more data that isn't currently available or known as far as I can tell.
