I don't really have a "go to" rifle. Now I'm thinking I should get one.am curious what everyone would call a go to rifle, to throw in the truck , use for predators, both 4 and 2 legged , for hunting sometimes, in your area/
The Mini-14 is not as bad as some people claim. Here's my target from a thread on reloading for it:
This is at 50 yards, squares are 1", so those groups work out to 3 or 4 MOA. It's no benchrest rifle, wouldn't be the top choice for small varmints, and I'd even want better for hunting deer at 300 yards, but it seems like it would be adequate for a lot of other things the 223 cartridge is suited for. Honestly, I'd bet there's a lot of people who couldn't shoot a similarly-priced AR any better. I've been told that it's possible to get a ~$1K AR to shoot sub-MOA, and I believe it, but doubt there are many truck-gun situations where I could hold sub-MOA.
I've got to believe the consensus that AR's are more accurate, but I think the Mini-14's accuracy should be represented fairly. There could be worse ones out there, but it would be a shame if people only judged them on the worst examples.
I'm not. By the OP's description, a go-to rifle would be for all purposes, and not just self defence. An AR15 would likely be the best if the sole use would be self defence.I am surprised how many said a lever rifle of some sort.

The Ruger PCC is amazing. Feeds anything, super accurate with HPs, very nice price.BUT, that little Ruger PCC is flat out amazing. I have yet to miss a shot with it. Love the little sucker.
That's a beauty. Love the short scope on it too.Well the last I'd sell would be a Sako Forester .308: good for most any hunting purpose short of moose in heavy timber, I suppost....will do nicely for predators out to 250 yds with lighter weight bullets, and equally good for two-legged threats close or far. Excess penetration would have to be considered, but good handloading with varmint weight bullets could potentially overcome that handicap. Too, cast light weight bullets make inexpensive practice a possibility.
A 2nd anniversary present from my bride in '72, it'll do for me...Best Regards, Rod

That’s why I picked my PC Carbine as well. It was the first gun I thought when reading the OP.The Ruger PCC is amazing. Feeds anything, super accurate with HPs, very nice price.
At this point in my life it’s my go to.
