What would be your next purchase for $500.00

I have ammo for the ones I own but how much is enough?

I often wonder about this, as "as much as you can afford," or "Until it fills your basement" are not realistic answers.

I say for a SERIOUS handgun, 500 rds each is bare minimum. 100 of which should be premium JHP's.

This does not mean you buy 500 rds, shoot 450 of them, then go buy another 500 rds. No, the 500 rds is what you always have on hand. If you want to go shoot, buy some more and shoot THAT. Don't dip into the 500 rds cache.

For a serious rifle, 1000 rds is minimum.

I wouldn't mind a center fire rifle but the only time I would use it is at the range, it's not much good for CCing.

Yes, this is very different from

"what would be your next firearm purchase for a well rounded gun safe?

Perhaps you need to further assess your needs and before meaningful suggestions can be given.

If you don't want/need a long gun, say so ! (even tho that is a serious hole in your gun safe.)

.

Yes. You need something that will kill big game out past shotgun ranges. The Enfield will do it, or maybe a Bolt Stevens in .3XX caliber.
Get a K-frame revolver.

Look at a savage rifle kit. You can get a good, very accurate (Not refined) bolt action with a scope already mounted in the standard caliber of your choosing for 500 or less (A local store here has one for 339.99). They come in .223, .243, .308, and 30-06. Probably some others I am forgetting) This would give your gun safe some longer range.

I would choose from one of the following: Good 22 rifle, an EBR of your choice, or a 357 mag revolver.

M1 Garand, its love at first *PLING*

I paid 500 for a International Harvester this past weekend. Shoots great!

For your ammo question, simple, how much can you afford to buy? If you can only afford to buy 3 boxes a month buy three boxes a month. If you can afford a case a week buy a couple of cases, the price is only to go up higher, and if it a caliber you like to shoot, there is nothing wrong with having 2 or 3 thousand rounds, when everybody is complaining about shooting a 50 dollar box of .45 you can grab one of your 25 dollar boxes and smile as you keep pulling the trigger.

If you think you can get by with 100 rounds get 100 rounds, if you think you need 5,000 rounds buy it. In a firefight there are two things you cant have too much of, ammo and cover.

If you're more concerned with concealed carry, I'd recommend an airweight Smith & Wesson J-frame revolver such as a Model 37, 38, 442, or 642. Personally, I can't imagine a day without one. I just went downstairs to the fridge at 3AM and it was with me. It's always with me.

That being said, you need a good centerfire rifle, preferably two, a scoped bolt-action and a semi-auto military-styled rifle, but everybody has their own set of priorities. :)

-Dedicated .38spl revolver.
K frame, with the 3" bbl, would be at the top of my list.
So would snub nose K frames, Colt Detective Specials, Ruger SP101, Ruger Six series...

-Reloading.
Shotshell reloading is easily done with a MEC Single Stage.
Now I never got into Metallic, instead I did shotgun shells and others did the metallic, and we did for each other.

So if you chose to get into Metallic first, that would make sense for you and your firearms you have to feed.

-Rimfire.
Use part of the money to buy some rim-fire ammo

Just picked up a Savage 10fp .308 HB rifle today... about your price range.. sure you need optics but it will fit the bill.

other than that.
Siaga 12
gsg-5
get yourself a .22 suppressor with tax stamp!!!!!!!!!!

You definitely need a rifle. A CMP Garand would be a great choice. As would an Enfield.

If your not wanting to spend all your money on a rifle, at least get a Mosin Nagant. About 80 bucks and you'll have a good solid rifle thats cheap to feed and can kill game if needed.

Other than that a good revolver.

I'm torn between a .38/.357 revolver for the nightstand or a .22lr pistol for practice

Guess I'll have to make a decision before everything but the kitchen sink is banned.

I'm looking at one of the new Walther PK380 models, due out in March. Might have to let the bugs get worked out a bit before pulling the trigger, however. And to spend the full $500, I'll have to pick up a couple of boxes of .380 ACP ammo to complete the deal.

Rimfire is pretty wonderful for daily shooting. Take your pick, they almost always are just plain wonderful. I have a CZ 452 Scout in .22LR that cost about $200, and will shoot all day long for $10.
I have to agree with SM about the dedicated .38. See my above comments about K-frame guns.

I'd go for a high powered rifle if you want a well rounded gun safe. A more powerful handgun like a .357 or .44 mag revolver I feel is a necessity also.

Just Monday I picked up a Micro Desert Eagle for $530. Next month I plan to get a Egyptian Hakim on Tuesday and order a VZ58 reciever for the part kits I have.
