Memories

Well, I wish they were mine but they aren't... :(

It's amazing what a HEAVY target rifle can do for your ego. They were absurdly easy to shoot tiny groups with. Ah, memories...

My favorite .308 is my Ruger 77RSI, light, quick handling, and very accurate for the first three shots. Which should be all I ever need for hunting.

Quite right.

May I respectfully suggest that your rifle needs a better sling?

Targets: Accurized Remington 700 VSSF, Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10X40 M1 LRT scope in Badger rings on a 20 MOA base.

Hunting: Remington Model 7 in an H.S. Precision sporter stock with a Leupold 2-7X compact scope.

Reid, yes, it's not a pretty sling, but it is oh so comfortable carrying the rifle when walking through the hill country. I had a regular leather sling then decided to try this and have never put the leather one back on. I normally use this rifle when stalking, so the comfort when carrying means a lot to my tired old bones. Big rubber pad, and stretchy nylon, equals means a really soft ride when walking.

Another vote for the absolute legendary FN Fal

Here is my Israeli Light Barrel Fal

The only .308 that I have. A Winchester Model 70. Sorry wrong picture. This one is of my Savage Model 110 in .243 and before anybody says that this should be a Model 10. This a older Savage and on the barrel it says Model 110.

OK, just to be weird, I used to have a French MAS 49/56 converted to .308. Great little rifle. Short and quick handling. The .308 gave a good push in that little carbine, but since it really isn't a light weight gun, it absorbed recoil just fine. I put the rubber grenade launching butt pad on it and that helped with length of pull AND recoil. Miss that little rifle.

I have two favourites, but I manage to shoot the first one more often than the second one:

There's something of a pleasure in being able to down every rising man-sized target at 250-300 m (that is, 20 rounds in mag, 20 targets), using iron sights and sling only (from last weekend experience), especially if the rest of the firing line is using bipods and optical sights. Would have tried longer distances, but shooting range was maxed out.

Pretty sure the fn-fal is what they referred to as an R1 in the old South African army. Anyone out there know for sure? I remember the older guys that went to the army and to Angola saying how they were putting several shots in the space of 50c (about the same as new $1 coin) at 100m.

My 308 is ugly truck gun. Acquired a pretty trashed 1909 Argentine Mauser for about nothing and a new surplus Israli 308 barrel. Moved the iron sights from one to the other, headpaced, cut the stock back a bit and it shoots about 1 1/2 inch +or- . Don't think I have 50 or 60 bucks in the rig.

I also vote for the FAL. Mine's an Argentine para version. It had a selector swich, but I had to have it converted to semi-auto only.

You are correct.

Don't try telling that to the AR lovers on this forum who believe that the FN is an inaccurate rifle plagued with a poor trigger, terrible sights, ill-designed stock, mediocre barrel, etc. ;)
