Holy Crap!

7mm-08, the .270 of the short actions! My new .223 is growing on me very quick though :0 Guess it depends on what i'm shooting at.

+1 to the 7mm-08; beautiful caartridge in a short action rifle.

After that I'd say something along the lines of 22-250 maybe .243 - other do-it-all cartridges.

.308 will do everything I need to do, with moderate recoil. The .308 is arguable the greatest short action cartridge ever devised.:) I can target shoot with reduced recoil 125 gr loads, or use 180's for elk huntin'.

I don't have much use for varmint cartridges, .223 doesn't do anything for me.:p

The op does ask for a favorite rifle cartridge but the only rifle cartridge I currently shoot is 22lr. My only other "rifle" is a lever carbine in .357 which doesn't meet the criteria of the thread. I do enjoy both, not sure what my next favorite is going to be yet.

I like the .308 Win. I own 3 rifles with that chambering, a Rem 760, a Rem 788 which has been nicely restocked, and a first year (1955) Win Model 88.

In no particular order,

* .22lr -- Cheap guns, cheap ammo, lots of fun, readily available.
* .223/5.56mm -- Accurate, lots of different loads for different uses, flat trajectory, ammunition readily available.
* 7.62x39mm -- Good all-around caliber, readily available. I think I may get a 7.62x39mm upper for my AR soon.

And, just to stir the pot;

*6.8mm. It's the best round ever. Jesus engineered it personally. Blows up tanks, downs helicopters, shoots deer through trees, and does not over penetrate soft targets.

I would have to say the 308 winchester but, since I have gotten rid of that caliber (STUPID DECISION) I like loading the 30-06 for my bolt and Garand rifles. There are lots of ways to go with the '06 in powder and bullet selection.

Lately 8mm Mauser just makes me smile. Really starting to get the hang of long range open sight shooting.

30-06 is still my favorite hunting round, .44 magnum is the most fun on reactive targets (pop cans, bowling pins etc within 100 yards).

.22 lr can't be beat for cheap fun.

It depends for me, I go through phases.....Always will love the .308 and .22, but right now I'm really enjoying the 22-250 and the 7.62x39......as for a favorite.... I guess I really can't answer that question right now.......
