I'm a pretty simple guy. Sorry you said no rimfires. It would replace the .30-30 on my list, so:

[.22 LR]
.223
.243
[.30-30]
.308/7.62
.300 Win Mag

Nothing exotic here, and that's by choice. Even when I decided I wanted an Enfield, I picked up an Ishapore 7.62 rather than a .303.

Rifles only....correct? Not pistol rounds in rifles?

1. .444
2. .375
3. .45-70 Gov't
4. .30-30
5. .356

Also, I enjoy utilizing my .405, .348, .307, .300WM(a little), .30-06, .308, .30 Cal M1, .32Wspl, and if I could classify it as a cartridge, my all time favorite....50 cal round ball ML in a Lyman Great Plains Hunter.

If I could use a pistol round in a rifle, the .44 Mag wins hands down. I shoot a coouple of hundred rounds a week in my Trapper and Legend, but it is not a rifle cartridge.

Notice I did NOT mention any of those foreign measured girly, girly stuff.

Not Necessarily in order (the order changes frequently)

.222 Rem
.257 Roberts
25-06
.348 Win
.50 ML

This has been a popular question on other boards as well ,

45-70 Classic with lots of potential.
458 win up close and dangerous critters
416 Barns a wildcat for us lever nuts.
338 win very good hunting round , and very accurate
308/7.62 Nato flexible and accurate

And 6 more that would be nice.

22lr
6.5x55
.308
.300 Win mag
.45-70

'Bout covers the gamut, wouldn't you say?

30-06 (can do it all, inexpensive and common)
22lr (just a must, cheap, can kill if need it to, fun, necessity)
30-30 (traditional, under-rated for close shots, love levers)
45-70 (traditional, power house for close stuff)
35 Whelan (don't own, fascinated by .35 cal that can reach out there)
.35 Whelan seems about perfect for my elk hunting area.
.223 (had to throw in a varmint round, .223 is cheap)

IMO, I'd go: (a) 223, (b) 308 (c) 22lr (d) 7.62 X 39 (e) 338 lapua -- new member to the list because I've just discovered it :D

30-06
30-06
30-06
30-06
45/70

i'd include .223 but i've got .223 55-grain sabots for my -06. i only include 45/70 because sometimes you just want to pound away with a 500gr bullet. sticking with no rimfires of course.

.17 HMR- with the 20gr XTP, i get 1"-groups out of my Savage 93 if i do my part
.22 lr- if the squirrel/crow is under 50 yards with the Ruger 10/22
.7 mm Remington mag- Browning BAR, not necessarily fun to shoot but oh so effective on deer and eardrums
30-30 - 150 gr powershocks, suprisingly accurate out of my 1943 model 94
7.62x54R - If you like Mosin M38 and flames
7.5mm Swiss - The swiss milsurp stuff is the best military ammo you can buy

I think i'm the only THR member that hasn't shot any .223 yet, oh well

.204 ruger - critter killer
25-06 - in between for everything
350 rem mag - deer and bear buster
7.62x39 (cheap fun:) )
300 rem ultra mag - my kill anything at any range round
