5.56NATO/.223 Rem
7.62x39
7.5x55 Swiss

I really don't have any other favorites, but I am certainly looking forward to getting aquainted with 7.62NATO/308 Win and 6.8 Rem SPC in the near future.

If it was based purely on what I have the most of, 7.62x54R and .30-40 Krag would be on that list. But I am not entirely sold on the platform for the former or the cost of the latter.

Of course .30-'06 is a groovy round, but I don't have enough experience with it to call it a favorite.

And I hope to buy a lever gun in .45-70, .444 or .450 Marlin, so I imagine i will have to make room onthe list for one of those eventually.

222 Remington Magnum: Well because I have one
300 Win Mag
30-06: Too bad its so difficult to get here
7.62x54 or 39 : See above
338 Lapua: would love one.. but costs two arms and a leg...

My top five.

.308 Winchester. Packs '06 punch into a short action and is accurate, to boot.
.223 Remington. Will do anything I need done that the .308 is too big for.
.45-70 Gov't. Just because. It's big, noisy and makes people stare at the range.
.30-30. Everybody needs that one beater rifle to loan out during deer season. Make yours a classic.
.30-06 Spfld. Ever popular, components and ammo are readily available, rifles can be had for prices from peanuts to small fortunes. Larger case capacity than the .308 allows for heavier bullets to take slightly larger North American game.

The four rifle calibers I shoot are:
.30-06
.308
7.62X39
.22lr
I really don't have a need for other calibers actually and if the Garand were .308 I'd trade my .30-06 Remington 700 in on a .308 Remington 700 to consolidate calibers, since the .308 can perform just as well as a .30-06 can.

But sometimes you just can't seperate a caliber from it's rifle such as the 7.62X39 and the AK-47. By themselves they just don't ruffle my feathers, but together, they're an awesome combination which until their marriage I would heretofore not be interested in.

.

Probably the only two I have any real experience with:

.308 winchester
.357 magnum/.38 special

30-06 - THE classic American cartridge
.223, 5.56 NATO - No explanation needed
7.62x54R - What good would Mosins be w/o it?
.270 Win - If Jack O'Connor were alive, he'd tell you how good it is.
7.5 Swiss - Expensive, but a very accurate round.

Honorable Mention...
.243 Win - A versatile round. Good for deer and varmits.

.22 Hornet
.223 Ackley Imp.

.25-06 Rem.
.38-55 Win.
.45-70 Govt.

The first three for prairie dogs and the other two for the pleasure of fine accurate open sight shooting.

223 (5.56)
30-06
308
17-222 (wildcat)
45 Colt. - not really a rifle cartridge but my Winchester 94 trapper shoots it really well.

Let me see:

.22 Hornet. Mine is a M82 Kimber. Learning to make the Hornet shoot was a real project, but I regularly produce 3-shot groups around 0.5" now. In the Ozarks, the Hornet is close to ideal -- in another environment, I might choose the .223, though.

6.5X55 Swede. Mine is an M96 sporterized by Kimber. Like the Hornet, it took some work to get it to shoot with enough accuracy to satisfy me, but now it makes an ideal deer rifle.

.30-30. A '94 Winchester in the saddle boot was the rule when I was a boy on the ranch, and I still carry one.

.30-06. As Townsend Whelen said, "The .30-06 is never a mistake." I have five, including two '03A3s, an M1, a pre-64 Model 70 and a Ruger shotgun safety.

.35 Brown-Whelen. Mine is a custom M1903 made by CW Fitch of Phoenix in the late '60s or early '70s. It drives a 225 grain Nosler Partition Jacket to an honest 2800 fps. It's my "heavy rifle."

Faveorite Five.
.416 Rem Mag
.338 Win Mag
.270
.204 Ruger
.17 Mach 2

Honorable mention:
.50 BMG
.300 Win Mag
.308
.223
.22lr
.17 HMR

Oh hell, I like them all!

.223 Remington: cheap, low recoil, accurate, adequate power.
6.5x55 Swedish: low recoil, sectional density out the wazoo, handles everything from coyote to moose.
30'06 Springfield: The quintessential American round, handles everything in North America.
.375 H&H: Classic Big Game round, good for any animal I would ever want to shoot.
.50 BMG: Does it need explanation?

 My fav 5 are the ones I'm shooting at the time. Other than that:
243,
8mm Mauser,
7.62x54r,
and 303 brit (I love Enfields--I plan on getting a 308 ishy--)

Honorable 2nd picks:
.308 never owned one but I like the 30-06 power with less recoil
30-06
7.5x55 swiss
7mm mag
8x56r
and last but not least drum roll please..............
7.62x39 --(you gotta love your SKS's and AKs)--

These are in no particular order. Azhunter.

In no particular order...sort of:

7.5x55
.22LR
.308/7.62x51 NATO
.223/5.56 NATO
.30-06

Honorable mention:

8x57
7.62x54r
.303 Brit
7.62x39
.35 Rem
.30-30

Here's my 5:

.270 Win, I've had the same Mod 70 since 1973, it's the rifle I never miss with.
9.3X62, CZ550, my elk rifle for 3 years, 3 elk, 3 shots.
.222 Rem, 340 Sav. I've had for 30 years, works on every thing to coyotes.
30/06, Have had a M1 Garand for a while, got to love it.
.22 LR. my 541S Rem is a tack driver, enough said.

My 2 cents.
