I’m not saying these are what I think are the best, they are just my favorite to use for both hunting and target shooting. What are you top favorites? I bet it varies on this board.

NOT including rim fire cartridges.

Top three I target shoot and hunt with
223 Rem
308 Win.
260 Rem

and

30-30
44 magnum, but that is not technically a rifle cartridge, that would then be the 300 Win. Mag.

OK, I'll play :)

.22LR (too much fun to leave out)
6.5 x 55 Swedish
.30-30
.30-06
.45-70 (never owned one, but shooting a few times puts it in the top five!)

Close seconds were .243 and .308.

.223 Rem I admit it, I like shooting the mouse-guns

6.5x55 Swede Nice balance of power and comfortable shooting

.303 Brit I enjoy shooting my Enfields

.308 Win There is a wide array of nice rifles that shoot this cartridge

.30-06 Spg The most powerful cartridge I shoot, I use this in my hunting rifle as well as my M1 Garand.

I shoot a couple of other old service cartridges (7.5x55 Swiss, 7.62x54r Russian, and 8x57 Mauser) but those are my favorites.

BTW, honorable mention goes to the .50 BMG, but I didn't list it as I will likely never own one. It is fun, though!

Have to agree with Beetle Bailey,
I really like the 5.56 AKA .223.
30.06
7.62x54R
30/30
and .357.
Yeah, I know, it's a "handgun" cartridege! Well, than how come I got two rifles chambered for it?:neener:

Hold hard

Jim

1. 7.62x39 , A.K.A. 30ppc:D
2. .223 , It just works especially in a 1/9" twist
3. 7.5x54 MAS , I have my own reasons
4. 35 Remington , what 30-30 marlin 336'es dream of being
5. 22-250 , this cartridge is just a lot of bang for the reloading buck

AND

5.5 of course 30-06

.22-250 (I have regular and slow twist improved ones) Varmint vaporizer supreme

.270 Winchester-almost a perfect deer rifle

.300 weatherby-served me all over the world from Elk to Oryx

.375 H&H (once again I have standard and Improved versions)From Elk to big bears and buff is all I needed

45-70, a great short range "brush gun" , has twice of or more additional range than a 12ga slug.

The ecclectic(fun) list:

.22 K hornet, a hard choice between this or a .17 K hornet as a fun, quiet 200 yard varminter

6.5TCU- an improved 6.5 .223, my wife has a 6 pound Old Sako Vixen in this caliber, it shoots a 120 grain bullet at 2600fps from a 22" barrel with little recoil and big effect on anything smaller than an elk.I also like the 7mm mauser for the same kinda use, maybe up THRU Elk.

30-06 , once again I have improved and standard versions and they really can do it all.I also like the .308 Winchester-hard choice!

.35 remington- I know , its old but it blows a big hole thru anything I've shot under 200 yards. 200 grain Corelokts at 2100-2200 fps 'git er done' with little fuss , in my XP100r 14" barrel and Model 600 18" barrel I load them to that velocity. The model 14 Rem pumps, Model 8 Autos and the Marlins get a little less. They all do the job- I like .35 remington!

.358 Norma Magnum- Nearly as powerfull as the .375H&H , mine seems to kick less than my old .338 Winchesters, I used it on Elk in Oregon and Montana at longish ranges-300-400 yards from a 11 pound 28" barrel very accurate Custom Rem 31 with a good piece of big glass on it when hunting in the mountains. It does at 400 yards what the .35 Remington does at 100 yards- and more! Think big game at long range from a rested position. I have chronographed 225 grain bullets at very close to 3000 fps from my gun.

.223/5.56
7.62x39
.308
.270

those are about it! i know it is only four but i don't do that much rifle shooting and when i do it is one of the top two generally, which goes to show that i definetly need to pick up a .308 semi auto sometime!

308
223
8mm mauser (hugely underrated cartridge)
30-06
these are the only ones I am very familiar with. I would like to say something in the 6.5mm family but have yet to actually own one.

.22 longrifle and .22 magnum, .223, .264 win. mag., .308 win., my favorite of course being the .264 win. mag. Not including rimfires it would be .223 rem., .243 win., .264 win. mag., .308 win., .35 whelen

MY personal favorites?

Glad you said no rimfires, because . . . Well, Just because. :p I'd surely have to give it one of the slots.

.30'06
.257 Roberts
.35 Whelen
.45-70
Uh - - - - .308. No, .223. No, nono, .375 H&H. But the .303 is so much FUN. And I couldn't do without my .30-30. . . .
Okay, I guess the .223. :D

Best,
Johnny

.22LR, .35 Remington, 7.62x39, 6.5x52, and 7.35x51. List in descending order of consumption.

270(regular-thanks)
7mm Remington magnum- again, regular; no short stuff
7mm-08, sweet and short~ but not a fattie
7mmSTW, shines with 160grainers
25-06 OR a 243.
The 270 is just about perfect for deer, except when the wind is blowing really strong, then the 7mm mag or 7mm STW come into play.
The 25-06 and the 243 give soo much range and power in a light recoiling round that I can't choose between the two. They just don't give enough bullet weight to the task to allow me to use them without reservation.
