OK here is the scenario. You have a maximu. of $1250 OTD to spend on any 1911 45 ACP due to tax return.
Which one do you buy and why?

But it has to be maximum $1250 tax included. Best handgun for the money

Personally I wouldn’t leave myself that short on cash for the sake of owning another but for the exercise I’d put Ruger or Sig up there on the list, a used DW if you could find one. It’s slim pickins at that price range and criteria for what I would consider, apologies to those who enjoy their bargain 1911s.

Who is finding DW's in the OP's price range now-a-days?
Used ones pop up on occasion. In the last year or so I picked up a Heritage for $900 and a PM7 for $1000.

Personally I'd get a Springfield Armory in the $800-$900 range but it's hard to argue with the Tisas, Girsan, RIA choices that are out there now.
due to tax return.
I don't know what that is......

Deals on used Dan Wesson's can be found. I stumbled on a DW Guardian in excellent condition for $1000. Patience is the key. A little luck doesn't hurt either.
There are other budget friendly models out there by Bul Armory, Tisas (SDS Imports), RIA, etc. Of these the Bul Armory 1911 Commander or Government models
are my favorite but hard to come by lately. Springfield Armory has some decent, well priced models, my favorite being the 1911 Emissary which can be found for
under $1250. I had the 5" barrel Emissary in 45acp which I sold and I am sorry that I did. I was going to buy another but ended up with a Dan Wesson Pointman
instead. I am sure you will find something that you will enjoy. Just be patient.

New- Ruger SR1911, with enough left over for extra mags, holster, and ammo. Used- Colt 1991 80 series, kinda shunned by collectors so prices are a bit more digestible.
Agree on the pre-owned Colt. … Not only will the Pony retain its value after purchase, but might arguably return the price paid down the road to the OP on re-sale, or even a bit more, unless purposely abused.

A Ruger 1911 shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same post as the Colt. :barf:

The DW 1911s that were mentioned above are one of the better-made clones out there but are still overpriced, polished clones at best. Retained value, therefore, will be less than a Colt on resale or trade.

Over the years I've owned several Colts, a few Springfield Armorys, a Ruger, a Remington, and a Rock Island Armory. Of those, I would recommend a Springfield, Remington, or RIA.

I have a S&W 1911 that I really like. The purists hate them for their external extractor, but it works well.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one to anyone. It's getting very hard these days for the average shooter to overlook the 1911s in the mid price ranges for mass production guns. Your budget will get you a nice 1911 these days, even if it doesn't carry a semi custom/full custom makers mark.
ETA my Colt Commander is NOT the best 1911 in my small accumulation of them (6),
In terms of fit, finish, or function, even though it was the most expensive.

If you're not in any great hurry then I would start looking for a used Dan Wesson, Springfield Armory Emissary or a Loaded Model, Colt Government Competition, Ruger SR1911 Target, SIG 1911 RSX .45 Full Size, or a S&W 1911 E-Series. Any leftover cash you might have could go towards ammo, spare magazines, or a decent holster/belt rig.

One that I saw a while back and have been doing a lot of research on are the ATI 1911s specifically their hybid "Moxie" line. Every review I have read & seen is glowing, relatively inexpensive depending on which model and surprisingly durable, reliable and supremely accurate. Here's the catch, it's all polymer........ Yup, I can hear the screams of HERETIC!! HEATHEN!! BURN THE WITCH!!
Still I'm seriously considering buying one.

Here's the Commander model in .45ACP.

They're made in South Carolina and it will take Glock sights.

You know what's really easy to find? A holster for a Government or Commander size 1911.

You know what's going to be really hard to find? A good holster for one of those ATI hybrids. I'm not saying there aren't any, but you may want to find a holster that you like for one of those guns before you head down that path.

Edit to add: Per the RIA railed models listed above in RikSors post - holsters for Government models with full rails are not common, and holsters for full railed Commander models are even less common.

I don't carry so I really have no need for a holster. Of course others might and that's why there are Uncle Mikes and other similar holsters on the market. I'm sure in 1911 holster choices for JB's guns were limited........

The official sidearm of the US Military quickly created a market to produce holsters for that gun. An odd design from a non-major player in the market, isn't going to create a lot of options any time soon. It's different from Glock introducing a G48. They're going to sell lots of them and holster guys are going to jump into that market real fast. An odd design from ATI is a different story.

If folks like that gun and want to buy it, that's fine. I'm just pointing out a good holster option may not be easy to come by.

My point was with any new design it's going to take some time for things like holster options to catch up, that's a given. I mean, how long has Glock been around as opposed to this design? Honestly for most people it's a non issue.
