Hunting season has already begun in some places, and isn't far away in many others.

Who is hunting something new or different this year?

Who is getting ready right now by scouting, shooting, reloading etc?

i have an alligator hunt next weekend, I have to do some reloading to check the repairs done on my 7 mag (new bolt face), need to put game cams out, cut some trees down, and basically get out in woods and see what's happening.

How about you?

Our Roe Buck season started on the 16th August. I sat out that evening and saw nothing. I had a mate down from Norway and he called in a buck Thursday evening and then he rushed the shot and missed.
I sat out Friday morning and managed to call in a six pointer buck that i shot.
Not long got back from working my spaniels on the ducks. The duck season starts today. Lots of very young ducklings about some not long hatched. Late in the year for so small ducklings. The weather was 23c and a bit sweaty but we got a few ducks. Must get out and shoot another buck as the weekends will be full up with duck and then pheasant shooting.

Our whitetail archery season starts on September 24 so looking forward to that.

Our squirrel season opened March 15 but I haven't been yet, as I don't like to go when it is too hot.
The first week of October the guys in our hunting club, as well as from a neighboring club, are getting together for a big squirrel hunt. Everyone will put $25 in the pot. Winner takes half and the other half goes for food for a big cookout on opening weekend of deer (gun) season for deer.

It sounds like you've got a wonderful schedule coming up! I love the pics. What type of rifle is that with the roe buck?

I have been looking at crossbows , thinking about using one for archery season this year for the first time . Just don't know if I want to start hunting when it is still pretty warm in October here .

I am on dog duty this month at the hunting club and we have 2 work days coming up in Sep. at the club . We will be mostly trimming limbs hanging across the roads ..

I am excited because I can hunt most any day this hunting season . I am going to be semi retired . I look forward to taking new hunters and kids hunting this season . I have been looking at buying another 870 for the older hunters and a youth model for the young hunters . It's nice that Remington has a $50 rebate on them now .

It's the same way here. When I was younger I was in the stand on October 1st with my bow in my hand with no excuses. Nowadays I use October and November for fishing. it's the perfect time to be on the water since it's cooler, the fish are biting, and the crowds are gone.

That's fantastic. I'm happy for you.

Getting ready???? I average putting out 1,000 lbs of corn a month....year around, not to mention some high protein pellets for the bucks too. Yeah I guess I'm ready.....
I did just buy my new hunting license a couple days ago...so I guess I'll be hunting for another year. One positive for us old guys in Texas...only 16 bucks for a senior hunting license.

The rifle in the photo is a Merkel 211E combi 12bore over 7x57R. I use it for all my roe hunting. 1St October we can hunt roe with a dog and use a shotgun so the combi is the best of both worlds. I've shot a couple of moose with it as wel

Preparing in my head. In the 'stan till 27 Sep. (sigh)

Well hopefully we can keep your spirits up as you read about us getting ready. Then when you get home you'll be primed and ready. Sounds like you'll be home in time for some of bow season, and all of gun season in most places.

What are you doing in the 'stan?

Squirrel season started Monday. I'll get into the woods with a shotgun or 22 and combine scouting and hunting some in the next few weeks.

Archery season starts here 9/10/16-10/21/16 and I'm going to try to hit the woods hard this year during archery season. Bear and deer seasons run virtually the same dates in the areas where I hunt and I've got a couple of spots where I feel good about getting a bear during archery season when their food sources are more concentrated.

I hunt almost exclusively on public land. I usually buy a calendar and mark dates when management areas within a reasonable drive are open. A few days ago I did this to map out and plan my season. Most of those places are 1/2 hour to 2 hours away. Some I hunt from home, some I'll set up a camp, and at least one requires backpacking into. Most just require you to sign in, but the Berry WMA rifle hunts are quota hunts. I have to go online and apply before 9/1/16.

Ready.

Still playing with different loads for 2 rifles. Started shooting the bow a couple days a week. Took the ATV out the other day and checked a few spots. Saw 5 deer and it was midday. Set up a feeder and put a camera on it. Will probably set a couple of stands and a blind on one farm where they want them thinned. They can't keep them out of their calf feeders. Now if I can hang on for another month I will be just fine.

I am not a Hunter. I am a Wildlife Population Control Specialist.

Got drawn for dove opener.
Then will recurve hunt bow season.
Rifle hunt consolidated firearms season.
Hope to have two in freezer then, switch to yotes.
Bunnies when snow comes.

Range next weekend to final verify my Ruger #1 RSI in .243 win.

gspn- just keepin' some folks safe that require adult supervision lol. The 243 and 308 are standing by with ammo and range kit to be sighted in as soon as I get back, and the woman already bought me my scent eliminator laundry soap. My buddy has been putting out corn, apples, and molasses.

Sounds like a full time job! Stay low, move fast, and get home in one piece.

I hope you have an awesome hunting season when you return, you will have earned it.

Ready to go into hells hole for elk! Season starts in six days. I'm in elk shape and shooting the bow well. A bit over an hour drive from the house to elk country.

I've decided I'm using dad's sporterized 03A3 for Whitetail this year and I'm working up some .30-06 loads for it. Starting to get excited!

Do you hunt with dogs or without?

I usually do not squirrel hunt with dogs, although a few guys in our camp do.
I have tagged along and I do like it. Living in an apartment doesn't lend itself to having hunting dogs though.

My brother has a Siberian Laika that is a hunting machine.

Moved back to Michigan recently, so I can legally hunt with a muzzle loader handgun I designed and built a few years ago. It's a .50 cal smoothbore with a 10" barrel, but surprisingly I can tag a milk jug at 50 yards pretty much every time. In Washington it didn't fit into any legal category, as there it had be a long-gun (18" or longer barrel) or a rifled handgun.
I'll carry that and my shotgun for deer this year. If I get a clean shot under 50 yards, I can use the BP, if longer, I can shoot to 150 with the slug gun. I'm in southern Michigan so can't use a standard center-fire rifle.
