It seems that every wannabe gun-guy fictitiously totes a Desert Eagle. Case and point, this guy who used to work with me. He claimed to be the proud owner of a DE, and yes in .50 cal! This guy lived in a rooming house and had no transportation but yet he could afford one of these? I personally felt that he was just blowing smoke. Before the DE was the wannabe gun-guy's gun, every wannabe had a S&W .44 Magnum. What's next in the wannabe gun cabinet?

Why do people who'll never get off a 6-lane interstate buy H2s?

The next wannabe gun will most likely be some .50 BMG rifle from Future Weapons... or one of those tractor trailer sized lasers that can shoot down artillery shells ;)

Because it's rediculously huge and unecessary of course.

^^Correct on both counts.

Desert Eagles are Big. They're Intimidating. They're expensive. And above all, they're flashy (what other gun comes in a dozen different factory finishes?). They're nice range toys, but entirely impractical for actual carry.

That won't stop a non-gunnie from wanting to buy one along with a shoulder holster, though.

I am the gun guy at work so I am always the one that everyone comes to ask about buying guns. I give them the low down on what is needed to buy a gun in Colorado. During the conversation I ask what they want to buy and the Desert Eagle always comes up. They always say that they want to buy one becasue to the uninitiated it sounds like it gives them instant street cred. Kind of like the self professed gun nut who does'nt own a .22

a couple years ago I spoke to a guy I am semi-friends with who was about to turn 21. I knew he was pro-gun, so I asked if he had any plans to take advantage of his new priveleges.

He said that he was going to get his CWP and his father had agreed to get him 2 Destert Eagles and that he'd carry one of them.

I said, "Well, I'm all for people protecting themselves, but I really think you should go to a gun store and see and feel a DE before you commit to a purchase like that.... I think you'll find that's not a particularly practical choice for EDC."...... and I just left it at that. I wasn't going to get overly critical. It's not my place.

Could I carry a massive movie-hyped gun? Sure! Anybody can. However I find a small gun like my EDC Glock 27 much more practical.

People just get wrapped up in the MSM's portrayal of guns that they forget that there is reality vs. fantasy.

As for the next DE type cult following - I doubt it will be a handgun. Handguns are getting fairly generic in looks (which is why movies are still using DE's a lot as they stick out). While I don't really care as it's not the exterior I care about - I'll bet that's a big driving force behind movie driven sales of DE's. So the next thing will probably be a rifle.... and since EBR's are generic now - my guess is something like the FN FS2000. Heck, even I wanted one until I saw the insides.

Why? Because it looks big and mean on the movie screen. Actors tossing around a 2 pound plastic version misrepresents the reality of owning, carrying and shooting a real DE

A friend of mine has one, he said he killed a deer with it one year. I don't care for them but the .50 AE is a stout round for a semi-auto hand gun. I like the BFR better!

How about this

it's because of the video game "Counterstrike".

Yup. I'm a professed video game fanatic myself, and I found 99.9% of the people I know who want to get a Desert Eagle want one because it was in one of the video games they played, often grossly mis-portraying its power or ease of carry.

I hear this all the time. Look on the Call of Duty message boards-you'll see that hundreds of 12 year old boy's fathers have mp-40s, MP-44s, PPsH42 or 44, thompsons, BARs, etc. And their dads all take them out hunting with these guns... (who'd of thought so many submachineguns from WWII would be in the posetion of fathers who probably wern't 18 in 1986.) :scrutiny:
Or worse yet you get the college age gaming dorks claiming to have a huge collection of military surplus rifles. So I ask them if they agree that the recoil of a 91/30 is nothing compared to an M1 carbine. They most often do agree. :neener:

I have a DE. It's one of the few guns that come in a caliber that I can hunt big game with here in MN. I don't care for it much. It's heavy, finicky and a general Pain in the rear. Instead, I carry my Witness 10MM for hunting. I THOUGHT the DE would be the ticket, but I was wrong.

This one is easy. It is big, powerful, and the movies make it look oh so cool.

If you have seen "Snatch", you'll know what I'm talking about. The monologue Bullet Tooth Tony gives regarding the firearms in front of him, was absolutely classic.

On to reality. Anyone that knows anything about realistic gun carry on a daily basis, especially for conceal carry or law enforcement will know better.

That being said, if I had the money, I would probably pick one up for the fun of it.

I don't see why people make fun of the DE or people who own them. What's the big deal?

Seems like a cool gun. If I had a huge collection, I'd want one of them for a little fun at the range. It looks cool, fires accurate, big rounds, and is probably a lot of fun to shoot. I bet since it's so heavy that it would tame the .44 pretty well. Sure, it's unpractical and a little over the top - but so what? If someone is carrying it around on their hip all day, then yeah- that's kinda crazy :D but other than that, I don't see a big deal.

Well hey, if you don't want it, feel free to send it to me as soon as I turn 21:neener:

In all seriousness, I agree with what's been said here. The Desert Eagle is popular because of how it's portrayed in video games and movies, and the uninitiated are unfamiliar with the reality of owning and shooting one of these monsters. I actually handled a .50 Desert Eagle once at a gun shop. Big, heavy and clunky. Oh, and, at the Magnum Research web site, a box of 20 rounds for the .50 AE is $29! Link here: http://www.magnumresearch.com/Browse.asp?Category=Desert+Eagle:Ammo

Only two ways I'd ever bother with such a gun. First, if someone gave me one for free or for next to nothing. Second, if I became disgustingly rich. I don't see either happening any time soon.

For a long time I wanted DE chambered in .357. Why? I don't know I just did. Then hollyweird started jamming the DE down our throats and now guess what? I don't want one anymore. Well I do as I want lots of things but thanks to mass media the DE has loss lots of its allure for me. As fat as the next "hype" gun? I would have to say the SW 500. I already know a couple of guys that own them (unfired). And at the gunshow I attended recently every booth with the 500 was crowded by guys I wouldn't want to stand on a firing line next to much less have watch my back. But don't forget the FN 5.7 as it can shoot thru anything. If only they chambered the DEAGLE in 5.7 it would be the ultimate gun. Huge inimidating and able to shoot super dooper cop killing bulletproof vest shredding rounds capable of knocking satellites out of orbit. :what:

I must confess I have a Springfield '03 w/ WWII scope as my long range rifle of choice. I was undoubtedly influenced by Call of Duty European Assault. However, my 7 other gun models are not starring in video games or movies. :D

Just to throw it out there, if you go out and play Counterstrike sometime, you'll find that the Desert Eagle beats most of the rifles in accuracy and power in the game. Thats what I always attributed the popularity to.

I guess b/c most folks want the biggest, meanest, baddest and the DE can easily be a candidate for the previosly described category. I would be interested in shooting one once, but they don't do anything for me. Now the baby eagle 45 on the other hand...

The movie Snatch.

"The fact that you've got "Replica" written down the side of your gun. And the fact that I've got "Desert Eagle point five O" written on the side of mine, should precipitate your...shrinking, along with your presence."

That, and movie guns only fire blanks (or nothing at all; aren't CGI effects wonderful?), making it possible to hold and fire one in each hand while diving through the air or rolling on the ground. :D
