Why do some guys think that the Desert Eagle is the ultimate handgun?

Because they are too young, and probably their dads too, to even know what a Black and White TV is, using Rabbit Ears, and viewing the Lone Ranger, Rawhide, Hopalong Cassisdy, Marshall Dillon, Paladin...Combat, Efrem Zimbalist Jr, ...etc,and all the stuff these guys could do with single action and double action revolvers and 1911s

Good thing my Colt SAA and Colt 1911 used the same suction darts, that was real handy when Combat came on after the Lone Ranger. :D

I don't like people calling any gun "unnecessary". That is a title that could easily be attached to ARs, Glocks, handguns in general, and all others. We all have different opinions of what is unnecessary. Want to know why the DE is so lusted after by both shooters and nonshooters? Because it's just freakin cool! If you break it down it really can't do anything that another cheaper handgun couldn't also do. The 50AE can't do anything that a 454 casull can't. And it pales in power next to the 500S&W. It does beat those guns in cool points however.
It's inaccurate to say the Desert Eagle is too big and unwieldy for hunting. Most hunters use a rifle that is heavier and less wieldy for hunting and they do just fine.

Why?
compensation maybe? :D
Idunno, it'd be a fun range gun if you just had money to blow, but I can't justify buying one. There are guns out there that are way more utilitarian and just as accurate and cost less. I guess it's a status symbol because of the cost... and the fact that you can buy one gold plated :barf:
(that's not meant to offend anyone with a gold plated DE, but it wouldn't be found in my house).

For instance, I first heard of it when I played Tomb Raider 3, where the Deagle was featured and was twice as powerful as a 12-gauge loaded with slugs.

Oh, now that's a different story! When I play TRIII, I always try to get that cheat where Lara Croft has pretty much unlimited Desert Eagle ammo!

But IMO nothing works on the Temple of Puna boss better than that bazooka.

<ahem>

Sorry, but I love Tomb Raider...

That's what I figured. It seems like a nice shooting gun because it's so huge. I handled one at the gunstore and can understand why noone would want to shoot it for very long because of it's weight, but still it seems like it'd be fun.

It's not the weight so much as the fact that it's a gas-operated semiauto. It absorbs its own recoil, like a gas shotgun.

Yes, I agree that it certainly eased some of the pain of shooting full-powered .44 Magnum loads in a handgun, but it was just too big and heavy for me to warm up to or to endorse for any extended shooting sessions

True, McCall1911.

Remember, though, that the 44 Magnum was not developed as a toy, or as a LE or military round like the .357, .45ACP, etc. It's a hunting round.

The .44 in general makes for a pretty lousy toy, especially if you want to shoot a lot of rounds! Doesn't matter what you shoot it in. 9mm, .45ACP, .22LR, .45LC, .38 Special, those are all a lot more fun as plinkers and target guns.

The DE is a neat hunting gun, though. It's lighter and more compact that an 1894 carbine. Comparing it to a 1911 missses the point.

I'm a little late to the thread but I think people think it is the ultimate hangun the same reason they think brand XYZ car is the ultimate driving machine, or Brand J is the ultimate off road vehicle. People like them because they saw someone do a shoot em up in some movie and now want one.

I keep trying to get the guys at the IPSC range who have one of these beasties to bring them out and shoot single stack with them :D Talk about putting that steel down right freaking now! It would be an expensive, albeit entertaining day for sure. Even the RO's would have to be double plugged.. 38 super open gun? Hell, a DE in any of the magnum calibers is going to be WAY louder!

A friend of mine has one in .44mag, all black. Very good shooting gun, I want one of my own but not for my CCW. That's just dumb.

I heard a rumor that the DE was designed by Israeli Military Industries to stop terrorist cars. Anyone know if there is any truth to that.

As for compensating, one could say that about any gun (or trucks for that matter).

The gist of the jest is that the "big gun" is making up for "small ...". Not very many guns compare in size to the Desert Eagle. It wouldn't make sense to say that someone toting a .22lr derringer is compensating... or that someone driving an El Camino with rusted out quarter panels is compensating...

I understand the argument. But in case you didn't understand mine, let me be more clear. Some people would say that a real man doesn't need a gun (.22, .50, or otherwise). Some people would say that if you have a big truck, you are compensating for having small body parts. Such may be the case. But often times, large men with large limbs drive large trucks (and have big guns).

So if you believe the gist of the other argument, then most hung guys are driving Mini Coopers, live in tiny apartments, and don't own guns, especially not guns of formidable calibers.

So much for that argument...

Oh, I see what you were saying now, but it wasn't really an argument as much as it was a joke.

As an owner of multiple "Big Guns", I can tell you it's a very tired joke.

(sigh) +1 on that

It all goes back to Psych 101 and all that Freudian claptrap that's misunderstood and become part of pop culture. The whole thing gets trotted out with monotonous regularity when some antigun hypocephalic pseudointellectual twit is trying to insult gun owners, so seeing it used by one gun owner on another is...:barf:

IMHO, the DE has an oversized grip and is clumsy to handle and operate, especially the safety lever. I also have a BFR, Contender, Grizzly, and 2 X-frame S&Ws, which are also clumsy, just have more reasonably-proportioned grips and more ergonomic controls. But I still like my DE; it's a lot of fun at the range, and I've used it hunted without complaint. Having 10 rds (extended aftermarket mag) of semiauto LOW RECOIL .44 magnum to chase stuff back and forth across the backstop with is a hoot! :D A comparison that I've heard and I'll repeat here, not because it's precise, but because it's the only way to describe it is: .357 recoils from a DE like .38 out of a standard-sized revolver, .44 out of a DE is like .357 "" "" and .50 AE out of a DE is like .44 "" "". Not a great fit, but it works...about like saying squirrel (or whatever) tastes like chicken.

<shrug> Whatever. Bought (used and at a niiice price) to make me happy, not anybody else.:neener:

Ok....here's a new one for ya:

I've never played any of the above-mentioned video games.

I had no idea the gun was used in any movies.

But I have wanted one ever since first seeing it...in .44 mag

It would be a pack/bag/BOB gun....not a CCW (pants already suffering from knives/phone/keys/etc. draggin 'em down)

I have had an unfired, NIB .50AE Desert Eagle sitting in my gun safe for over ten years, waiting for it to become the next Auto Mag. The pistol has not appreciated, but .50 AE ammo has mostly remained the same or increased.

The .50 AE Desert Eagle is pretty much a totall loss unless you just love to own and shoot one, and it's probably going to stay that way. Most people buy one by mistake, due to bad math or a lot of testosterone. Either way, it's an expensive baby to feed, and apparently those of us in the club will never get our money back out of them.

I could see myself getting a Baby Eagle but I dont see much of a practical use for the big DEagle at all. I have smaller hands, can't really carry it and the ammo is too expensive to be a range gun. It would be cool to shoot off a couple rounds of a big 50 cal just to see what its like though

"The Matrix" is probably just a responsible for this as anything else. I actually like the Desert Eagle but prefer the .44 magnum version. They are huge and heavy but well balanced and very robust.

Have you seen the price of some of these factory 1911's these days? It's getting rediculous.

after reading everyone's posts...I've gotta say...
the desert eagle isn't a bad gun, but for most I can't see it being the 'ultimate handgun' for most.

I'm not a small fella, but I prefer a 9mm as a carry gun, at the range I prefer my 1911 in 45acp. I enjoy shooting, I don't care if it's a .50AE or a .380 Lorcin, If it goes bang, it has a purpose somewhere or it would have never sold.

I had one in .357. I sold it and deeply regret having sold it. It was a fun gun and a sweet shooter. It was also a fun gun to have out for cleaning when an anti-gunner was coming into my home. Few guns can evoke such a horrified look.

I hope to own another.
