Does anybody know what size bases fit a new FN Winchester model 70 Featherweight compact 7mm-08 ? Is it the WSM size. I believe they have stopped designating SA anymore, is that correct ? Thanks. :banghead:

Depends on which bases you are buying. I use the exact same bases (Talley Lightweights) on my 308, 30-06's and 300 WSM. They are interchangeable. If you are buying a 1 piece bases, which I'd avoid, then you need to check with the base manufacturer. I don't see any reason why the WSM and standard short action wouldn't be the same, they use same stock.

What rings are you using? I have Leupold Standard Rings with 2-piece bases on mine. Doesn't matter if it's LA or SA. Talley Lightweights or Leupold Dual Dovetails are good too.

These are my options: two piece Leupold, Talleys and maybe some others ?? One piece picatinny rails from either EGW or badger ordinance and then weaver style rings. I am going to be using a compact scope and as we speak do not know the distances between objectives I have to work with. But I will soon have rifle and scope in hand and can figure that. But my question is does the new Winchester SA use the WSM on the mounting charts. In the older 70s you would use LA or SA but I believe the New FN Winchester has changed that to LA and just WSM for the shorter actions. But not sure. Anyone know ?? Thanks.

Received some great advice from a EGW guy. The Winchester 70s old or new are completely unpredictable ( not sure I understand why, being a giant manufacturing company ) so to be absolutely correct, without guessing, LA, SA, or WSM, measure the distance between the inner two holes and then get a picatinny rail for it. There are many options on the rails. With MOA added or zero MOA. For my needs I need zero help on MOA. The Talleys and the Leupolds are wonderful products, but with a compact scope the rail increases my options of scope placement. With the mild elevation of the rail, it allows good ejection without hitting the scope and combined with super low rings doesn't get things too high. All combined less than 1.75" above the bore. That will work. So found my answer and thank the three who responded. TC :)
