Would you ever go deer hunting with a .308 Bushmaster?

while it is not my idea of a hunting rifle (weight, and i prefer bolt guns), i would certainly take it assuming i could make it legal (mag cap).

when i hunt, i'm there to kill game - not for a gun/fashion show. so yeah, i would. and, i doubt a word would be said about my choices in weapons from the guys i hunt w/.

this is the third thread i have seen with people asking about hunting with a mil style rifle. Its a rifle. My M1A has taken numerous anmals. 308 is a perfect cartrige for Anything weighing 100 to 1000 lbs. or a few ounces i guess if all you shoot is paper

MY friends probably would just laugh if i showed up with a 1919 :what: What!! it just a .308 :D

If your friends are wary about what kind of gun you use based on its military appearance, then you are obligated to take it. Someone needs to educate them that all rifles are created equal and none are inherently evil. Now if you wanted to take a .22LR, that is a different story. However, you are using a .308 and that will work just fine deer hunting as you probably well know.

I took my Remington 700 VS in .308 deer hunting once. After humping that around all day, I decided that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my much lighter and flatter shooting .30-06. I don't know how heavy that Bushmaster is, but you might end up decided the cool factor isn't worth it afterall.

I wouldn't mind getting a pig or a deer with my K-31 though. I loaded up some 150 grain hunting bullets for it.

I didn't find the Bushmaster to be terribly heavy when I handled it. Of course I have a FAL as a point of comparison and one of it's alternate dutys would have been deer hunting if I had gone before I managed to destroy it. But that's another story ;)

The Bushmaster is a weapon designed for hard use and harsh environments and are reported to be very accurate. Don't see any reason not to use it as a hunting rifle.

I would hunt with it. If I ever decide to hunt in northern MI, I'll bring along my Saiga .308 with Choate Dragunov stock and a plugged mag (5-rd limit in MI for semis).

I say go for it, it should do a better job than a Bushy in .223..... No mag limit here in Texas as far as I know...

I've (deer) hunted with a Garand a few times. Heck, I even hunted with a semi-auto Uzi once in the river bottoms one year when it was the only thing I had available on short notice. My brother routinely hunts with an SKS, albeit a pretty nice one.

I might consider hunting with my FAL one of these days, if I can recruit a gun bearer.

The only thing I can see possibly awkward about hunting with your AR is that I'd be unhappy if I dropped it or scraped it up somehow. Use 'em if you got 'em.

Regards,
Rabbit.

Sure why not? My paternal grandfather's post WWII deer rifle was a Lee Enfield.

I've got a friend that has taken deer with both a .223 AR15 and a folding stock Norico AK-47.

Guns is Guns. The Bushmaster .308 is on my list, and one of it's duties would be for my once every decade or so deer hunts.

I don't hunt, but if I ever take up hunting it will probably be with my SAR-1, a 5-round magazine, and a 4x24 POSP scope.

My father uses a 1903A3 30-06 to go hunting with. My brother uses a enfield
in .303. This year I took my AR-10 out with me. I have a 5 round mag that I
use with it. I get a 1 inch group at 100 yards with it. I didn't seen anything I
wanted to shoot with it this year but I was out in the woods with it for 3
days. What is the differences between using a Remington semi-auto or a
Bushmaster or anything else in semi-auto?

Sure, I'd use it if it was all I had. .308 is a great deer round, and properly scoped, that rifle would do great. I'm sure there are lots of deer taken with it every year.

That said, I wouldn't use it over any of my bolt deer guns. It's kinda like using the right tool for the right job. Sure, sometimes one tool can be used for a job it wasn't specifically designed for, but if you've got the perfect tool already, why wouldn't you use it?
