What's wrong with using WWB (from Walmart, say) for "self-defense"? In view of price, one could use them as frequently as one feels necessary at the range and one could thereby verify how their "self-defense weapon" performs with this "self-defense" ammo.

FMJ has the potential to over penetrate the target. I know of no WWB that is not FMJ. I guess I am wrong on the JHP WWB. I might have been thinking of the 100 count value packs.

That's what I use. 9mm 147g JHP. I have not seen side by side comparisons that make me want to change ammo or caliber. My self defense ammo and mags get "tested" every time I go shooting.

Hollow point

Thanks, rellascout. By WWB I meant Winchester White Box and I do have some hollow point version of this in .40S&W. I think I bought them for about $20/50.

WWB is available in JHP. I've carried the 115 grain in my 9s for years. I can afford to practice with it, so I know it perform well in my guns and is reliable, and shoots to point of aim. I don't have the cash to put a couple hunred rounds of Gold Dot/Ciritical Defense/HydraShock/CorBon or any of the other big names through my gun.

I ran a box of 50 of those through my SR9c with no problems. It was +P ammo and pretty snappy. For SD, I carry Corbon DPX. My spare mags are loaded with the WWB JHP. For range duty, I unload all of that and go with regular target ball ammo.

It is very expensive to practice with the carry ammo, but every now and then you have to do it.

There are at least 2 scenarios where the FMJs are appropriate defense ammo in my book. .45ACP because you really don't need a HP, and .380 because you don't get much penetration if you use a HP :) But yea WWBs come in hollowpoints ;)

Yeah!

What mljdeckard said! I made a rough check of how much I spent on "premium ammo", and when compared with how much more practice I could have gotten from WWB, I wasn't happy.

I don't carry WWB for SD ammo for the same reason that law enforcement and military agencies don't -- it doesn't go "bang" every time, and isn't manufactured to the same specs.

I may have an exaggerated view of the value of my life, but putting it at risk to save a few bucks on a box of ammo once a year just isn't something I'm going to do. :what::eek::neener::neener::neener:

I've gone through close to 5k rounds of WWB .45acp since I bought my 1911. I haven't had a single problem. It hits where I aim, and goes bang every time. Because of this I carry it in my pistol every time. It's what I practice with, so I know how it will react if I need to fire multiple rounds quickly. I'm not worried about over penetration, cause you can get it from hollow points as well. In the end, carry what you want, but practice with what you carry. Hopefully you will never have to find out if hardball is too much for self defense.

and what do you know about WWB specs? I carried WWB on duty for five years because that was what I got issued. I went bang everytime I qualified, and I have never seen it misfire.

I tried a whole bunch of ammo and the WWB was not my fav. I have fired approx. 150 rounds of WWB and my biggest complaint is the feeding. I've noticed in the 96 that WWB tend to catch and not feed well. (I'm talking a total of about 9 times in the 150 rounds thru the fac. std. mag) Other than that only 1 fail to fire and no other real complaints. All ammo has the ability to either go boom or click . Bottom line, use only what you are willing to trust in.

I have never noticed WWB in JHP. Maybe I am not looking close enough. Bullet technology as far as HPs are concerned are leaps and bounds what it was 20 years ago.

If they feed reliably and you have tested to some degree their expansion I see no reason not to use them.

How much does their 9mm JHP cost and what weight/gr is it? 115, 124 or 147?

The WWB .45 JHPs can be bought for $30+/-2 per pack of 50:) alternatives can be frighteningly expensive.:barf:

Haven't had a misfire with WWB yet.

Good for you. The problem is that I have had several misfires with them. I've seen enough to know that there is a small chance that the next round in that mag isn't going to perform the way I need it to if I'm packing WWB ammo. I will practice with it, but I won't keep it loaded in my gun when my life is on the line. Just saying...

The centerfire ammo from major US manufacturers is so reliable now that any dud problems are most likely fault of the firearm.....with inexpensive bricks of .22lr it is different.

Was this with a striker fired pistol?
WWB is all I have used in several 500-800 round training classes I've taken. Through 3 different Glocks.

Zero problems with the ammo or the guns firing it.

And while I wouldn't recommend FMJ for defense, if it is all I have available I would use it.

Anymore, I think almost ANY ammunition will do the trick if its called upon, be it FMJ or hollowpoint. Some are marginally better than others and 3 times out of 10 JHP is going to perform like a FMJ anyways. I usually carry Hydrashocks, because I have seen them perform on flesh and bone and trust them completely..9mm Hydra saved me from a VERY large pit-bull, one shot, it only moved however far it skidded in the gravel where it dropped. I dont think carring WWB would be a bad Idea at all, IMO, its affordable to practice with , and when called upon, I doubt the goblin is going to laugh and say "HA, I am impervious to budget ammunition..."...just my thoughts.
