I'm seriously thinking of buying a Beretta 92FSS but don't see many advertised for sale in Gun List or my local merchants. I'm assuming it's because of one of two things: a) the demand is so great nobody has them or b) nobody wants them anymore.

Is this a great gun? Or was the appeal purely because of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard?

BTW, my price locally, for my guy to order is $625.

The Beretta model 92's are very fine weapons, but seemed to have
declined somewhat as far as appealing too the public. I still sell a
few NIB, here and there; but its not like the brisk sales that was
the outcome of the military's adoption of the M9. I think in this
day and age when the prespective buyer is looking for something
"lighter (in weight), and smaller (in size) they steer away from the
Beretta 92.

I would venture to say that the Beretta pistol line has slipped into
sixth place in sales at our store behind Glocks, Springfield Armory,
Taurus, Kimbers, and SIG's.

BTW, $625 seems a little excessive for a standard NIB Beretta 92!

They are reliable, smooth, heavy, large guns. Depending on your needs, it may or may not suit you.

I had a 92FS, and it was a great pistol. Some complain that it's too big for a 9mm. It is big, but so what? It certainly helps damp the recoil from hot loads. It was 100% reliable, and accurate. My only reason for selling it was the grip. I have fairly small hands, with short fingers. The combination of a fat grip with the trigger reach was just too large for me. If I had larger hands, I'd still own it.

Also: try to ignore the persistent posts that appear about how they have let our guys and guys down in the Middle East. Mostof the problems stemmed from the Army providing substandard aftermarket magazines. Typical of the Pentagon!

Some people like shooting them while others don't. I don't like shooting them very much at all for some reason. Make sure you try one out before buying to see which camp you fall into.

I agree that the price is too high. I am also one who just can't grip the darn thing. How the heck does the average woman do so? Whatever...

I can see why some hate the weight of the Berettas. I love my accurate, perfect functioning 8000, but the sucker could be used as an anchor, If it was lighter, it would be my carry gun. I think the design is a real winner and that's why the Storm is there...and lighter.

Anyway, if a 92 fits your style and hand, why not. But, look around as you can get a much better price.

I bought my Beretta 92FS about 2 years ago and shoot it almost every time I go to the range. I have big hands and long fingers so its big grip and heft suite me well. It's a bit heavy for concealed carry and I prefer my 1911 or SIG 220 for comfort and round. However, with the +P or +P+ round, 9mm is just as good as the .45 acp or .40 S&W. Here in No.VA a NIB goes for about $680.00.

I have very averaged size hands and own a Beretta Centurion 92D (DAO) that I have no trouble in gripping or reaching the trigger. $625 is way out of line, should be more like $525. The last 92fs I looked at had a terrrible trigger, to the point that I wouldn't have even considered buying it if I were interested in another Beretta. MY DAO trigger is a delight, smooth as butter, and earlier DA/SA models seemed to have nicer triggers as well. Maybe I just looked at a bad example. If I were you I would try one out if at all possible. Like most guns they have their fans and foes.

I had one once. Good shooter, accurate, well made, no mech. problems.

I got rid of it, because the grip was just too big for my hands and the trigger take up was too long. I also disliked the safety way up there on the slide.

I traded it away for a Belgian Browning Hi-Power and never looked back. The HP has a better grip, nice crisp single action trigger and is an overall slimmer pistol than the chunky Beretta. The 92FS just seems huge compared to the Hi-Power.

Check out a HI-Power...or maybe a CZ-75 before plunking down major dollars on the big chinky Beretta. Don't buy it because you saw it in a movie...buy what fits best, feels best in the hands and you feel confident with.

I think you are getting some good opinions but remember that they are just that. As you can see, the Beretta 92 is a love it or hate it kind of gun for some reason. I happen to love it. I have small hands yet it feels much better to me than most other full sized hi-cap 9mms I have tried. As for price, I don't keep up much on new prices since I buy almost all my guns used now. I have found that you save so much money that it is hard for me to buy new unless the price is pretty close.

I think the beretta 92fs is the best full sized hi-cap 9mm out there. I have tried SIGs, BHPs, Glocks, Rugers, S&Ws and other but the Beretta is so smooth and easy to shoot fast. I have no trouble reaching the DA trigger and I can keep it under control with one hand in rapid fire. It has two major flaws IMHO. 1. The slide mounted safety. It is too easy to engage it when racking the slide in a hurry. 2. The safety itself. It would be much better as a de-cock only and just forget about the safety. In fact, I think all safety de-cock guns should just be de-cock only but that may just be me.

If the SIG felt better in my hand, that would be my first choice since I think it is the best designed gun and quality is not lacking. The DA trigger on the SIGs I have shot have been below average but that can be fixed. I really feel it is a two horse race between SIG and Beretta with every other maker comming in a distant 3rd (including Glocks, CZ, S&W, Ruger and H&K).

Next to 1911s Berettas (92s and 96s) are my favorite. My hand fits the Berettas grip perfectly... I would choose them over any other 9mm.

But they do take a back seat to my 1911s..... let's keep that straight ;).

IMO the Beretta 92 is an excellent, classic handgun. There are a number of reasons they might not be selling as much in shops right now, including: at $600 or more the price is a bit high, the new ones have some plastic parts, they are a bit large and thick in the grip, there are lots of used 92's in good shape for half the price of a new one. I like the 92 a lot and would recommend it if it fits you and you aren't looking primarily for a carry piece.

Just as many others said, if it fits your hand it's a great gun. I am a big guy and it's ergonomics are perfect for my hand. It's been 100% reliable for me as well. Great pistol.

Thanx for the input. I think I'll trade my P96D on the Beretta 92FSS. It is a stainless and the best price I can find on the net for a stainless (Guns America) is $609. My guy wants $625. If I wanted blued I could get it in the ballpark of some of the estimates here. I guess the good folks who responded to my inquiry thought I was talking about blued.

I've had one about 5 or 6 years, I really enjoy shooting it, it fits my hand extremely well and is very comfortable to shoot.

My 2 favorite automatic pistols are the Beretta Model 92 and the 1911.

First pistol I ever bought was a Beretta 92. This is quite possibly the finest production 9mm pistol ever made. In a time when a lot of other manufacturers are starting to cut corners, Beretta still constructs pistols like they did 20 years ago. Nothing but quality in these babies!
