Long time lurker but my first post.
Buy "The Second Amendment Primer" by Les Adams. It's relatively inexpensive and goes into the history for the need of self defense. Buy it on Amazon.
In ancient Greece, citizens were required to keep weapons and be proficient in their use. Most of the framers of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were well versed in European Law and the history of despotism including the desire of rulers to disarm the populace. In our early colonial days there was no responsibility to come to the aid of a neighbor who would not protect himself. There are quite a few court cases giving results of the phrase of "well regulated militia". Adams spends a lot of time and paper going through the legal history of the challenges to the 2nd amendment.
Buy it and learn. I've now read it 3 times and still get more out of it.
