If they seem like they will enjoy shooting, the Savage Rascal seems to be the way to go. If a handful of times a year is more their speed, the Cricket. I've got a Cricket, and my step son just doesn't hold any interest in shooing, so I'm okay with having spent so little. The plan was to eventually upgrade him to something bigger, but that isn't looking likely.

Got my son a Crickett when he turned 5, he enjoys shooting and to this day (he's 9 now) he still asks to take it to the range with his 10/22 and MkII. The good thing about the Crickett is it makes him take each shot one step at a time, he works the action effortlessly and is a good shot with it.
I'd get him it again if I did it over again.

My son turns 4 in April, and my wife has bun #2 in the oven, due in July. It's a little early for my kids to shoot just yet, but when then time comes I think I will buy the rascal. I like that it has a "real" bolt and not not kind you have to manually cock. I had one of those myself as a kid and struggled with it...
