Zumbo shooting with Nugent

I'm very, very upset with Zumbo, but there is a chance he can redeem himself. To do so he needs to:

1. Become a vocal supporter of black rifle types and acknowledge the true meaning of the 2nd Amendment.
2. Become active in fighting to preserve the right to buy and own black rifles.
3. (Most important) Actively educate other hunters who might be "less than educated" like himself what the true meaning of the 2nd Amendment is and why all hunters should be actively supporting the 2nd Amendment.

If he can heal the rift that exists between some hunters and real supporters of the 2nd Amendment, then I think I will be able to forgive him.

The damage from Zumbo has been done.

If we can get him shooting EBR's and touting their sporting use, that will HELP our cause.

Will it reverse what Jim did? NO. Will the Anti's still try to use his words against us? YES.

However, use Jim as an Olive Branch to the others who thought/think as he did about EBRs.

Remember, none of us has to make a decision right this very moment about forgiving Mr. Zumbo. Some could do it with his second post, some might take a couple of years, some probably never.

It doesn't cost a dime to keep an open mind, nor does it cost any rent to reserve judgement for six or so months. I'll take a "wait and see" attitude. I'm not sure what would convince me Mr. Zumbo has changed for the better, but I think I'll know it when I see it, and I do hope I'll see it.

Somehow, I don't think I'll every find the same forgiveness for Mr. Petzal of Field & Stream. He has a history, and he put salt in an open wound, I think I see the permanent spots on that Leopard, or should I say stripes on the skunk?

We need to wait and watch. The glove has been thrown to the ground and we all know what Mr. Zumbo needs to do. If he does it, then we should forgive him and give him the respect he would deserve for humbling himself and doing the right thing. Repentance comes first, then deeds firm up the changed heart.

I'd love to see pictures next hunting season of deer taken by Zumbo and an EBR, or EPR. If anybody can turn him around, the Nuge can.

Some of y'all are thinking with something other than your heads. You're angry. Okay. That's fine.

Now, take that anger, put it in a nice little box, and file it away for when you can do something wtih it.

And open up the box labeled "logic."

We've got a problem. We can't beat it to death, so that adrenaline-fueled thing that's now banging around inside the anger box isn't going to do us a lot of good... But the precision tools from the logic box are going to work wonders.

+1 bogie

Amen to that.

I've had to work on keeping the "riled up" part of me on a short leash.

Some PR dude somewhere observed that "perception is reality."

Zumbo is working on the perception.

I say we help him out.

If our "reality" out in the world is changed by this, then we win.

There's plenty of time to sort out his mindset and misbehavior behind closed doors.

Not in front of the kids.

Good for him, and that could be good for us. He is learning the truth about what great RIFLES they are. When he comes out and says he was really wrong, it will make a lot of noise, and besides his conversion, all those ignorant folks who jumped in with simliar uniformed opinions may just revisit their ideals too.

It would be supremely ironic if Zumbo, having been dropped by his old sponsors for being a Fudd, enlisted a new slate of EBR manufacturer sponsors like Rock River Arms, Barrett Firearms, etc.

I'm all for Zumbos rehabilitation, but If memory serves me correctly he lives in Montana and Nugent lives in Michigan. Where did they find full bloom trees and warm weather in the middle of February? Didn't realize Michigan & Montana had missed all the snow, ice, and cold weather the rest us have endured. Perhaps a file foto someone dug up? Inquiring minds would like to know.

So far, so good.

However, there is one particular form of penance I'd like to see:

He needs to talk to those who spoke up in support of his retracted point of view and wake them up. He was one among many, and he seems eager to change- others seem ready to dig in their heels and point to the reaction against his comments as an example of how unthinking the pro-EBR crowd can be.

It's just my opinion, and I can't speak for anybody else, but he sits in a unique position- those who spoke up for him and defended his remarks did so because they respected the man. Now, if he says "I was wrong, these things should be legal and available" they have bound themselves to give him a hearing.

Says here he lives in Texas.

Anyway, the problem is that this is all speculation. None of us really know what's going through his mind; whether he is sincerely changing or is just pretending to change to make money. But what is certain is that even if he pretends really well, it will bridge the gap between hunters and non-hunters.

People are rightfully mad at Zumbo.

However, if he can become a poster boy for anti-black-rifle hunter types waking up and smelling the coffee and taking the second ammendment seriously, then this could be a positive.

There are a lot more hunters out there who are not politically active for RKBA because they don't see the connection between banning "assault weapons" and banning their "deer sniper." Zumbo wasn't the only one. If he can help more hunters make the connection, then good for him.

Personally, I think he has been spanked pretty hard.

Not to get too religious here, but my faith tells me I can't expect others never to sin. All I can hope for is that when they sin, they will 1) realize what they did, 2) admit what they did, 3) genuinely repent, and 4) try to make right. If Zumbo does all that, I'm willing to cut the guy some slack.

For the skeptic

None of us really know what's going through his mind; whether he is sincerely changing or is just pretending to change to make money.

While that's true, ponder this: He's 67 years old. He's old school. All he really has is his reputation and his honor.

In his shoes I'd be doing everything I could to fix the only thing of value that I have.

While I could be wrong, I would propose that it's really not about the money.

It's about restoring his honor and reputation.

Let us, for the time being, grant that he wants to make things right.

I know I would.

Not so many years ago I held views roughly similar to Zumbo's. It wasn't until I walked into the Frontier Trading Post in Cheyenne, Wyoming in July of 1997 and tried to buy a handgun that I changed my mind. I had just packed everything my wife and I owned in the world (including my hunting rifles) and I decided I should probably have something with me to protect my wife and my belongings. I walked in, talked to the owner who I had known for many years, and asked to buy a .357 snubby, thinking that would be good for the trip. Imagine my surprise when he told me that I would have to wait 5 days to pick it up!

I hadn't tried to buy a handgun in so many years that the Brady Law took me by surprise. I wasn't ignorant, it had just never affected me because I never saw the need for a handgun until I was faced with a cross-country trip with no protection. Boy, did that wake me up! I then bought a Mossberg 500 12 ga. with a pistol grip and walked out the same day. Talk about twisted logic. Even in my semi-unaware-of-2A-issues state I thought this was hilarious. I'm willing to give Zumbo a break. There's lots of gun owners that go along blissfully unaware of how legislation affects them until they try to exercise a right they thought they had.

Sometimes the waking up process is rude and harsh, but wake up we must. If Zumbo wakes up and starts fighting for the rights he assumed weren't being eroded, all I can say is, welcome back.

Remember the old saying, "a conservative is a liberal who's been mugged." Too bad he had to suffer our ire, but better he suffer that ire and mend his ways than continue to make off the cuff remarks without being refuted. We done good. Here's hoping he does good too.

I think he is trying to right the wrong. As has been previously stated, IF he is sincere in his renewed 2A stance he could help bring more votes from hunters to our side of the RKBA battle. With that said he's gonna have to work REAL HARD for some folks to believe he has changed his ways.

Well, it's a beginning. I believe in redemption and forgiveness....but he will need to go beyond a photo op with Nugent (That might be punishment enough...having to spend time with Nugent.....even having to listen to his music would be worse).

I still am bewildered that Zumbo was so clueless as to have made those statements. They seemed such a cross between elitism and treachery. But I can get over it if he puts one foot in front of the other and does what is within his power to change. It's too early to forgive.....or to brand. Mostly I'm diappointed right now.

I don't give a Rats 'A' HOW MUCH Dumbo sucks up.
He is STILL going on about how he "Didn't know they had a legadamate hunting purpose."

F that. THE 2ND AMENDMENT IS NOT ABOUT HUNTING!

Dumbo is dead to me.

you have to crawl before you walk, and he's taken the first baby step.

maybe he'll learn to walk/run by actually standing up and speaking out that ALL types of guns/shooters are covered by the
2nd amendment.

This picture provides some insight and inpires a question.

Insight: Jim Zumbo must be very secure in his masculinity to be photographed with that rifle.:D

Question: If the owner didn't like that rifle, why didn't she just sell it? It's an inanimate object; punishment means nothing to it.

That's just not true. As of last Thursday 02/23/2007 he said this:
Thank you all for letting me speak. Yes, I know the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting and hunting guns, and yes, I promise you I am now dedicated to educate all shooters that we must all stick together regardless of our gun choices, and also tolerate the firearms others may choose to use if they are dissimilar to ours. I will do everything I can, within my power as a journalist and public speaker, to protect the 2nd Amendment and America's gun owners.

Now if that's still not good enough for you fine, what do want the guy to do go light himself on fire in front of Dianne Feinstein's D.C. office?

Well. We shall see what he actually SAYS and writes outside this one statement made on a shooting board to appease us peons. He's had plenty of chances to make a statement to the press since he wrote this.

Personally, I'd like to see him shooting an actual black rifle in his photo op. Those who don't know ARs will have no idea what the heck he's shooting.
