This is my first post on the affair... mainly 'cause Greebly is faster than I am (Great post, Arfin!)

Sooo....

post 10:

This article attempts to paint the AR community as "oppressors of free speech." Nonsense. The Constitution limits the government, not the citizens.
.

.... here we are, using that term "AR," just as MSNBC intended.

Seems to me the NRA is getting credit for the zumbo event. NRA had nothing to do with any letter I sent but if they get the credit so be it.

On one hand, the article acknowledges that "assault rifles" are sometimes used for reasons other than terror.
he publicly criticized the use of military-style assault rifles by hunters

At the same time, it perpetuates the fallacy that hunters and "assault rifle" owners are two distinct groups with no over-lap.
a rift could emerge between hunters, who tend to have the most money for political contributions to gun rights causes, and assault-weapon owners, who tend to have lots of passion but less cash.

Well, Zumbo is so determined to make things right, I say he can get his butt to working on this.

He needs to send a press release refuting this garbage, call out wray as a self promoting liar and tool of the brady nazis, and very clearly say that he had it coming, he deserved it, and he's glad it happened.

Come on Zumbo, let's see it. (I've never seen a quack put back in a duck, but he wants to try.)

Does someone have an account on Teddy's site? That seems to be where Zumbo is hiding out under the safety of that forum's moderators.

WIth another "assault rifle" ban looming in the near future, a lot of good will come from the Zumbo affair.

At critical moments in the past, as in 1994, Fudd writers like Zumbo were able to tip the views of politicians toward voting for the bans. "See, I'm really for the hunters. Hunters don't care about assault rifles, real hunters don't even like them! Look at famous gun writer Jim Zumbo, even he agrees with me!"

IOW, the Zumbos give cover to those wavering RINOs and red state Democrats who might vote for the next ban.

That ain't gonna happen again. Only eco-weenie-greenie nobody's like Wray will now stand against Homeland Defense Rifles.

So by falling on his sword today, Zumbo may have actually helped the cause in the future, by serving as an object lesson to other Fudd writers.

re: Pat Wray

Pat Wray is an outdoor writer associated with the American Hunters and Shooters Association, which is a fake organization set up by prominant anti-gun rights activists to "Zumboize" hunters against EBRs and .50 cals.

http://www.nraila.org/Hunting/Read/HuntingArticles.aspx?ID=200

Sure enough, there are some who have fallen for it. Outdoor writer Pat Wray was gleeful to parrot the phony rhetoric of AHSA, writing in the Corvallis Gazette-Times that “AHSA appears to be the answer to the prayers of a lot of shooters and hunters who have become disillusioned with the NRA.”

Wray advised Ricker, Rosenthal and Schoenke that “we will beat a path to their door,” and said “the ripples emanating from the AHSA pebble are getting bigger and gaining speed as they approach NRA headquarters.” Ricker and his cronies were likely rolling with belly laughs when they read Wray’s naïve, enthusiastic embrace.

From the deposition, we know there may be at least 100 to 150 others who have bought the same line. But with the unlimited funding of anti-gun social engineers, and the clear ability to fool at least some outdoor writers into giving the sham group free publicity, who knows how high that number could climb.

To Dave Petzals' credit, he tried to expose this sham organization to his readers:

I can't believe the shooting community has turned so harshly on one of its own that has done so much.
We have expressed out dissatisfaction. Jim has expressed his regret. We should move on constructively.
This whole reaction shows just how seriously we take our cherished right to bear arms.

He has expressed regret over and over but I've never seen an apology. I haven't seen a retraction of his remarks about AR/AK owners being terrorists and the evil terrorist assault weapons.

Perhaps it should be pointed out in various replies on this issue, that regulation of hunting in this country is largely in the hands of state Fish & Game Departments, and I know of no instance where those regulations prohibit the use of military pattern semi-automatic rifles for hunting beyond imposing a cartridge limit on magazine capacity - and this applies to ALL semi-automatic rifles, and not just the (so called) assault kind.

The policies of these Fish & Game Departments make clear that from a regulatory perspective there is no reason military pattern rifles shouldn't be used for hunting, regardless of the "image" this might present to the "general public," that for the most part couldn't care less.

Zumbo declined repeated telephone requests for comment. He is a 40-year NRA member and has appeared with NRA officials in 70 cities, according to his Web site.
So goes the pride, so goes the fall. It appears Zumbo began to believe all the things said about him on his own website.

"For so many years, Zumbo has been a voice for these people -- for hunting and for guns -- and they just turned on him in an instant," Wray said. "He apologized all over himself, and it didn't do any good."
Similar things happen to ministers who preach false doctrine from the pulpit in churches.

As far as apologies go, Mr. Wray is behind the times. Now, famous personages who screw up in the public eye check into drug/alcohol rehabilitation.

Ask Mr. Wray if he is feeling a bit nervous.

I think at age 67, Mr. Zumbo's outdoor writing career is probably over. I believe he is unemployable in the outdoor or firearms industry at this time and he does not have enough time to rebound. I reget that the whole affair even happened. My suspicion is that he misjudged his support base, hunters, and shooters alike. For that he is guilty in my opinion.
Yes, he did. Maybe he should have gone to a few gun shows and talked to people to see where the shooting sport has gone.

Now if gun owners could just dismantle the career of a long standing politician.
I wonder if this had happened before 2004, if President Bush would have been so quick to say, "If an assault weapons ban comes to my desk, I will sign it."?

I am pretty sure the politicians are looking at this Zumbo affair and wondering if the same power of the military gun owners can be brought to bear on them.

Actually, he got it completely backwards (surprise!) I have been in the RKBA fight for well over 50 years and I have seen (and participated in,) our community train the NRA to fight for our rights over those years. The lukewarm, token, homage towards our true rights shown by the NRA in past years has grown to a more solid support and defense as we continue to hold their (NRA's) feet to the fire.

Keep it up!

I don't mind that the perception is out there that if you speak of limiting our right to own and/or use semi-auto rifles in a safe and legal manner, you should expect immediate and severe backlash.

If that perception also includes the NRA as the driving force, so much the better. We cannot afford to let the NRA lose any of it's power when dealing with politicians and their ilk.

If they fear reprisal from the NRA and it's members, its a good thing. In this case I will take obedience based in fear in place of obedience based in respect.

Nonsense, that won't make them give up. It will just make them more likely to do something crazy get guns away from NRA members.

Lets remember something here. These guys are saying things that are directly opposed to our Second Amendment rights. This isn't a .45 vs. 9mm or AK vs. AR debate. These are guys that are erroding our rights. I think it is completely and perfectly acceptable to find them and remove them. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging their First Amendment rights and acknowleding our rights to exercise a free market economy and cut off their economic support.

We are not going to convince these anti-gun Fudds that we need to work together by working with them. We will convince them when every young hunting writer out there understands if they don't take a pro-Second Amendment stance in their writing, they will be fired. We will win when they take note and actually start advocating that we stand together.

There are plenty of writers out there. We do not need the ones who write junk and divide us. We can and should destroy their ability to take our money and use it against us and strongly encourage those left that they will be next.

This very well could be a witch hunt. A witch is still a witch and needs to be eliminated.

I love how they immediately assume it's "NRA training". The last thing they'd ever want to admit is that we think for ourselves.

Cody, Wyoming- a good place to become "Personna non grata". Have a good life, Zumbo...

The Story - As They Wished It Happened

The story is written the way the media WISHED it happened. "Big" businesses and the "evil" NRA making nefarious power-moves to bring down a 'good ol boy'.
The story doesn't give any real credit to what actually went down early this week.

The NRA didn't even make the smallest move until after it was over ... which was lat on Tuesday. By then, I had already written dozens of emails and letters and most sponsors had acknowledged that the COMMON SPORTSMAN was pissed.

Keep kicking law abiding gun owners and treating them as if they are criminals because they choose to own and use something perceived as dangerous by the ill informed and this is what you get.

I don't own a car that will do 160 miles per hour, and never intend to, but you don't hear me, a law abiding "assault rifle" owner, saying they should ban or regulate Ford Mustangs!

I didn't turn on Zumbo. I never heard of the guy untill he started running his mouth about how my guns are terroist weapons.

If they did, a rift could emerge between hunters, who tend to have the most money for political contributions to gun rights causes, and assault-weapon owners, who tend to have lots of passion but less cash.

I guess that I must be worthless white trash. OOPS! Gotta go put the '84 Monte Carlo back on the cinder blocks...one of the 15 dogs that live under my front porch knocked it off.:barf:
