Nice wood and the frame case colors are great! What is the manufacturer date code? If it is new, Pietta is making them better than before. Where did you get it and for what price? Envious!

Thank you, sir. I bought it in May when Cabelas had their sale. I believe it was $199. I'll check the date code tonight but I just unboxed it last week so it should be of fairly recent manufacture. This is the fourth Pietta I have purchased in the past three years and I have been very happy with all of them.

I have been happy with all of the Pietta 1851 Navy .36 type guns I have purchased, all from Cabela's. I have 3 actual Pietta pistols, but due to Pietta's CNC machining I can create at least 6 different pistols just by changing parts between them. All .36 caliber. Second Model 1851 Navy squareback TG, Third/Fourth Model 1851, Griswold &Gunnison, Schneider & Glassick, Leech and Rigdon, and a Rigdon 12 stop slot cylinder.

Kudos/thanks to you for your good replies, sir. I can post pics if you wish, but I think folks here have seen them enough times.

Your fine looking Pietta Model 1851 Navy reminds me a lot of the Pietta Model 1860 Army I got last year for Christmas. Very well assembled and finished with some decent case colors on the frame and has a really nice trigger too. Been thinking about getting a Model 1851 Navy to keep both my Model 1860 Army and my Model 1858 New Model Navy company.

I realize that just two revolvers is an extremely small sampling but given that they were purchased sight unseen (it actually took 3 months for me to get my Model 1858 from Cabela's), I feel that Pietta has stepped up their quality with their latest offerings.

I agree. Either I have been very lucky in purchasing Piettas or they have stepped it up. My Pietta Frontier is quite possibly the prettiest firearm I have owned in years. It shoots very well too.

Hi all,
I guess I too should belong here. I’ve got .a Traditions (Pietta) 1851 fantasy navy 44 Brasser. It is a ball to shoot, no pun intended. I got it in the Lakes Region of NH two years ago. Saw it, liked it, and my wife said buy it, so I couldn’t pass it up (she’s good to me. I shoot .454 ball with 20 grains of Pyrodex P, and a lubed wad tween powder and ball. I’ve let a couple of people try it at the range and Cabelas has made some sales as a result. My 10 yr old grandson loves shooting it ( he’s fairly accurate with it). He wants one when he gets older. My son and the seven year old grandson also want one ( 7 yr old isn’t big enough to shoot it yet.)

Here’s a picture of it. The holster/belt/buckle come from Mountain State Supply. Living behind the lines in MA I had to do a CSA buckle just to tick the anti 2A & pc folks off.

Haven't gotten to shoot it yet since the bolt spring broke within minutes of being unboxed, but I have an otherwise beautiful Pietta steel 1851 Navy in .36.

Also have my eye on the little sister 1862 Pocket Navy. :)

If the 1862 is a Pietta it isn't a little sister, it's the same frame with a shorter barrel.

well... I said "Navy," not "Sheriff," so I think it has to be a Uberti! And it is a lot *littler*! :)

Since they've been discontinued though, I better not think about it too long, they are getting scarce and they are "cute as a button!" :)

IMG_20150227_135340-25068445.jpg Here's my Uberti 1862 Detective Special (oops, Police Police) along with its ASM big brother. Love the PP, one my favorites, but man, I've got to redo those shiny orange grips so they look more like the ASM's oil-rubbed wood.
BTW, the ASM 1860 is with Mike B. getting Goonerized. Can't wait!

I guess it's also just Pietta that calls the cut down barrel full frame guns their "Sheriff" variants whereas Colt called the little 5-shooters their "Pocket" models.

Steel Hayes

As strange as it may seem, especially for a revolver with "pocket" in it's name; I think I actually prefer the Pocket Navy with the 6.5" barrel over the 5.5" barrel.

I am glad you want to tick off the Yankees (of which I am one!). I love ACW history and have no problem understanding either side, no matter whether one or the other side was right or wrong. One had to live in the day and the age.

I am not a fan of any .44 brasser with the rebated cylinder and the cut water table on an 1851 Navy. I see that yours has a date code [CL] 2013 and it looks like a "tail" grip profile which was discontinued in 2015. I have one from 2014 with the "tail", and I like the feel of it in the hand much better than the newer 2015+ grip profile. It is slimmer in the wrist. Your call.

Nice looking revolver, Bruce.

Regards,

Jim

Like this one(6.5”) or the shorter barrel?

The Pietta Pocket Navy is nothing more than an 1851 steel frame with a short barrel. I had an ASM 1848 Pocket squareback but I found it to be way too small for my long fingers, so I gave up on Pockets. 1851 Navies are the way to go for me. The Uberti is much more correct.

You folks have a good night.

Jim
