Demolished Marlin

Ka-BOOM!! :what:Look how the barrel split and lots of pressure went straight down onto the forearm... I truly hope his hands aren't forever ruined and he gets some use back.

If you can find out the recipe he loaded that would possibly help us all figure out wha hoppen.

Tell him good luck!

Stay safe.

I read the ad. I have two questions....

1. Reloads or factory ammo?

2. Is it possible there was a squib immediately prior to the last shot?

Only the shooter probably knows, and he didn’t say anything in the web site

The poor seller probably needs some money for medical bills, given that the blowup removed his complete thumb, a few finger tips and mangled his left hand.

I assume it was a reload. Buy the rifle and get the complete story, and tell us what you know.

Or not. I think it would be cheaper to buy a new guide rifle and blow it up. Just don't be holding the thing.o_O

That "has" to be a bore obstruction of some kind.
Full (100%-full) load of Bullseye only shows 85ksi behind a 350gr Barnes,
whereupon I would "think" the lock-up would fail/case rupture/blow the gas down through the action.

I would love to see the particulars when finally known.

Quotes [" "] are an indication I haven't a clue -- only gut feel

I am pretty sure i would be an obstruction. As for a powder overcharge, maybe a compressed double load of h110/w296? Stiil I would expect the bullet to exit the barrel unless it was obstructed.

Agree with several who commented that it looked like a barrel obstruction. An overpressure round might blow the gun, but I seriously doubt the bullet would stay in the bore. My guess is that the previous round was a squib and things went wrong when the bullet from the next round tried to occupy the same space as the bullet from the squib.

The banana peeled barrel is pretty typical of a bore obstruction incident.

People love pistol powders in the 45-70 for some stupid reason.....I would lay odds on a bad recipe.....with you saying Barnes I am betting it is a reload....usually it is a look at what factory ammo did....nope this is all on him.

Was it the correct bullet.

(IF) it was a reload.....and I bet it is....it is all on him.....If not then he needs to have a talk with whoever made the ammo.

The Marlin action isn’t a Mauser, or Rem 700, which we’re more used to seeing destroyed. They yield at much lower pressures, meaning sooner and differently - it’s very possible a single over-pressure event could rupture the action and barrel tenon as pictured, while leaving the bullet in the bore, without an obstruction in front of it.

The dude’s trying to sell the parts to get it out of his life, and recoup some money for his medical bills. Not so different than a “gofundme” page, just wrapped in a Gunbroker banner. Not so complicated.

Quote"This is a fairly new Marlin 1895 guide gun in 45/70 that exploded a few weeks ago removing the shooters complete thumb and a few finger tip and mangeling the left hand.

Modern smokeless.
Does smokess have similar pressure ringing with air pocket like BP?
Was thinking if it does and he was reloading but not compressing with bullet perhaps he missed the filler. Seems I remember a call out for gun cotton filler when loading 38sp with unique 231. Was a long time ago i don't reload but knew someone that did.

I have seen destruction like that before, the fellow grabbed the wrong powder.

These were the photos he posted.

Like about what I could imagine 40 grains of a very fast pistol powder could do.

There have been obstruction photos posted as well.
