Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Sinclair, 21st Century, NECO, Premier Accuracy, and likely others, make good ones.

Our squad started at the rectangles at 300, 400, 500 from four positions and I got 8 out of 12. A good start, but it got ugly at the next stage. 16" & 14" circles at 726 & 12" & 10" circles at 619, possible 8 points. I used the temp at the range and the mils seemed high. They were, bad, between moving from weak side to strong side and switching positions, as well as shooting over the targets, I scored a big fat zero. Struggled at the next one with dope again, 2 points. Then used a higher temp in the app, adjusted a little on the fly, and shot 9 out of 9 on the next one. The stage we finished on had IPSC targets right to left of 100, 75, 66, 50, & 45% at 813 to 817. Two hits on the large one then move to the next smaller size, two hits on it and so on. Wind was getting switchy, changing directions with small gusts, not blowing real hard, just kept changing. Got a six on that to finish out.

One fellow had a tripod to help steady the rear of the rifle on barricades etc. Sam borrowed in on four or five stages and used it very effectively. I used it on one stage, should have used it for more, it really helped.

Sam scored 46 hits while I had 40, Jeff lagged way behind both of us. Our hit ratios both went way up, we were below 50% last time, this time Sam said he was at 75% and I was at 70%. I was faster, but not fast enough to get a chance at all of the points. I shot 57 times for 40 hits, even with the big fat zero on one stage. Brought 116 rounds and returned with 59.

Overall a great time.

I looked at Practiscore a bit more. Sam was the only one with 46 hits, so he was an honest 41st place. Two of us had 40 hits, and with no tie breaker I was placed alphabetically above the other shooter, so we were 47th/48th.

I shot one stage clean, but about 24 others shot it clean as well, it wasn't a real hard stage, platform was stable, targets easy to find etc.

Awesome

Have someone run a cell phone video of your stages next time, I bet we can find a way to help you speed up with better accuracy, but 70% is pretty darn good, I’ve done worse for sure

The rear tripod trick works very well, but we don’t see it very often because it’s slower than simply shooting free recoil on the obstacle. Given 2:00-2:30 stages, and sufficient room behind the obstacles, it does work, but don’t get too committed to it.

that's awesome! i'm really glad to see you shooting well. maybe you'll get some character marks on that fancy gun of yours soon. try going to Rifles Only in texas or something, where you get to crawl through concrete tile with the rifle slung over your shoulder

On one stage there was a W made from railroad ties, two spots to shoot were the outer tops so I was able to jam the rifle against the post as well as the tie, just jammed it in there, may have a mark(s), I did not look. I was more steady on the 45 degree parts than I was on top of the middle of the W. It was not cut flat, should have used the bag instead of the barricade block.

In Jan, I picked up 2 rebarreled actions and 2 spare barrels from my gunsmith. He helped me carry out to my truck, and as he was ever-so-gingerly setting them in the back seat, I commented that he didn’t have to be so careful. He replied - “yeah, it’s funny, we’re all so careful with our rifles and scopes like they’re made of glass when they are at this point, but a month from now, you’ll be slamming it into a barricade at full speed and using your windage turret as a pivot point.”

No such thing as a “LNIB” stock, rifle, or scope if it has been used in precision rifle matches!

The MPA BA PMR Compettion & Competition "Ready" rifles looks like good values and another quality option to get started in PRS

Or maybe a barreled action. The "Tenacity" action isn't Defiance's top action, but looks like a good entry level set up. Buy a stock etc to go with it and bingo.

Early 2020 I want to get/put together another rifle for the kids to use. Looking at options. I am sure there are other good options out there, any other suggestions?

Buy a piece or two at a time and pretty soon you have another rifle. I would like to try an MPA (Or other brand?) chassis stock anyway.

I ordered the Wiebad Whiskey Charlie MFC and Range Cube bags the other day. The Range Cube is huge, bigger than I expected, the WC MFC is about the size of the Armageddon Pint Sized Game Changer (Excellent size IMHO), and similar in weight to the "heavy" PSGC, but the fill seems finer and it sits dead still on whatever you plop it on. It conforms well and is very solid, I believe I am going to really like it.

Plop it on a post/obstacle with the "U" up and plop the rifle in the U. It conforms around stuff like it is filled with fine sand. Waxed Canvas cover.

Whiskey Charlie MFC - “Waxy Canvas Mini Fortune Cookie.”

Waxy bags with fine heavy fill are hot this season. I haven’t found my best stability running in the “U” of any bag, way more real estate running on the side of the bag.

If I could justify carrying the weight of carrying two bags for all obstacles, it would be a full size Fortune Cookie and a small waxy with heavy fill, whether Mini Fortune Cookie or Pint Sized Game Changer, flip a coin for me. But I won’t carry two, so it’s a heavy, waxy pint sized Game Changer which gets all of my play now.

so it’s a heavy, waxy pint sized Game Changer which gets all of my play now.
I have one of those, as well as a light one, and like both, and time will tell which bag(s) get more use, but I think I am really going to like this WC MFC. Never know till you try.

Signed up for the Oct 12th one day shoot.

Awesome!

I'm already starting to go through withdrawals, I only have 2 matches left for sure this season, the Kansas State Finale and the PRS Midwest Regional Finale. I MIGHT pick up one more 1 day match this season, only if I decide to miss my son's football game (one more 1 day match is not a high priority, at this point).

Fire formed 50 more cases at 300 yards with help from a friend at work.
He really got off on shooting such an accurate rifle. I knew he would, he shoots well.

We knocked the center out of the hostage target, it's missing a clip on
one side of the rod hanging down, I must remember to bring a new one next time.

Shooting that tight on steel at ukd is just immensely satisfying.

Shooting it quickly from practical field positions is orders of magnitude more so.

Knowing there are thousands guys around the country who can do it gives a whole different perspective on the feasibility of mass gun confiscation.

Dang good shooting walkalong

Something I haven't done yet, but I am sure it is an awesome feeling. All of mine prior to getting a true long range rifle setup was 400ish and in.

Yep. They'll go after our rifles next if they get the AKs/ARs.

Heh, it's hard to miss with that rifle at a mere 300 yards. :)

I thought you’d shot a match already

Yes, a couple, but it was all known distances. My previous unknown distance shooting has been years ago with a Sake .222 Mag. "Prior to getting a true long range rifle". Eyeballed the distances and held accordingly on crows. It had an old Redding Golden Five Star 6-18 scope in Burris mounts on it for a very long time, but I switched it out to a Vortex Viper a couple of years or so ago.

i guess i was thinking multiple target transitions laterally and multiple distances, more than actually not knowing the distance (though, i do like using a range finder to figure it out more than having someone tell me the target distance

Yea, I do like the transitioning and multiple targets at different distances part, even though I am slow at it so far (getting better). It is very satisfying when I get it right and actually finish in time. I am actually starting to like the timed part of it, even though it is still a challenge.

I have 3,100 rounds down the tube on my Mausingfield. I have another Bartlein MTU contour barrel in 6mm sitting at Short Action Customs waiting for assignment

Let’s say I want to re-barrel this rifle for the purpose of entering the PRS scene

Since I’m already invested in a 6BRA would you all suggest sticking with that cartridge or something else?

@Nature Boy - Stick with BRA. It was exceptionally popular this season, and I don’t see any reason it won’t remain so next season. The shift between 6.5’s to 6’s was a shift in the game, nothing has changed away from the BR based cartridges, and nothing about the BRA which disadvantages it among its brothers.
