.41 Mag Association

Until then, looking up load data and assembling components to put together some ammo for it.

If you have questions about component choice(s)... post them up! We .41 guys love to talk handloading... since that's about the only way you can shoot the silly things unless you have a secret stash of factory ammos. ;)

If you need brass, hit me up... I can prolly hep you oot.

Hey I need brass! Very hard to find here..

Just found this thread and am happy to join the gang. Some years ago I got a hankerin' for a .41 after having heard the virtues of this cartridge extolled by many. Being a Smith guy I of course wanted a 57 or 657 but they just never come up for sale around here and when they do they cost a mint.
A few years ago while visiting a LGS I just happened to notice a 5.5" Redhawk in fine condition that someone had just traded in. When the store owner finally quoted me the price I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough! Figured it would tide me over until the right S&W came along. Since then it has become my main deer gun and is responsible for several of them as well as a coyote.
A couple of years later the right model 57-0 did come along (pictured below, the queen of my .41's), followed very shortly afterward by a 57-1. I then couldn't turn down an offer on a beautiful 657 a couple of years ago, and then the Ruger Blackhawk game began. After finding a near-new 4 5/8" New Blackhawk, my latest .41 discovery was a 1970 3-screw, brand new in box, unconverted and never fired.
Yes, I may have a problem.

Starline makes new .41M brass and also make a shorter, .41 Special brass. Not sure how hard it is to order stuff like this and ship it across the pond. Technically, SAAMI never certified a .41 Special brass. However. .41M and .44M brass are the same length, and the .41M brass was shortened to the same length as .44 Spl brass to create .41 Spl. I've never ordered the .41 Spl brass, I prefer to download the magnum brass.

Hello, unfortunately nobody seems to be willing to import .41 Mag brass here in France and Starline can't sell directly..

Does my Ruger Blackhawk 6.5" 41 Magnum qualify me?

I've owned three S&W Mdl 57s, three S&W mdl 58s, and a Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8", but all got sold or traded along the way. The 6.5" Ruger is dead-nuts accurate and has taken two deer and a javelina.

I sold this nice straight 57 about a year or so ago and tossed in a set of new S&W rosewood grips.

I finally found another barrel set for my Dan Wesson 741. I bought it with a 6" V barrel, but a ring developed in the barrel... not a bulge, just a ring in the bore. Very odd, and I don't know how it got there, or whether I even put it there. Anyway, I don't quite trust it with full-house .41 loads... which is kinda why I bought it in the first place.... and have been only shooting my mid-range cast bullet over Unique loads in it.

There was a big Dan Wesson revolver dump on GB last week, including 2 4" .41 barrel and shroud sets... one blue, one stainless. Beggars can't be choosers, so I went after the blued one... it ended 2 days before the stainless, and I thought it might go for a bit less... and I was right. In any event, I now have a 4" barrel to go on the .41 Dan Wesson... making it a Magnum, again.

I’m newer to guns than y’all so I have zero experience with 41mag. I do love my 357 and 44 magnum revolvers. What’s the selling point of 41mag? Is it just to have something in between 357 and 44?

I had one in the 80's. Traded to my dad. He passed in 95.
While going through his gun stuff I found a bottle with about 20 reloads that he had done for it.
I still have them and the memories.

It can be loaded up to .44 Mag power levels with less recoil and slightly flatter trajectory. It's a fine whitetail cartridge.

.41 Magnum was marketed much like .40S&W was against 10mm. Users wanted something powerful, but with less recoil than .44Magnum. .41M kind of fell on its face, the revolvers made for it didn't sell all that well after the "new" wore off, and most were discontinued within about twenty years of the caliber's introduction. Collectors and people with a soft heart for "orphans" are who mostly buy them, or people who want something with a milder recoil than .44M. I have a .44M I don't shoot, and two .41M's that see a fair amount of range time.

It's still a potent cartridge and can approach .44M but can be downloaded to the level of .44 Special easily. There is a non SAAMI-certified .41 Special brass available for those who want something even milder. The biggest downside to .41M is finding ammo. It's a reloader's cartridge and even so, not nearly as wide a selection of bullet weights for it as for .44M

Have been hunting with 41 Mag for around 30 years, primarily deer, an occasional hog or what ever vermin needs assassination.
Prior to the 41, had been utilizing 45 Colt - while quite effective, I wanted more.
Beginning around the 1930s, there was a lot of gun writer ink spilled about the effectiveness of a certain 250 gr, 43 caliber bullet travelling about 1200 fps. The success of this loading was due to a good balance of power, accuracy and shoot ability. While those involved in the release of 44 Mag should be applauded, it is really more gun than most of us can use. When looking for the bigger gun, I realized how easy it was to launch a 250 gr 41 caliber LBT bullet at 1200 fps from 41 Mag. I have hunted [deer] with 357, 41, 44, 45 and 454 - the 41 Mag offers an optimal balance of performance - this is the reason for 41 Mag - the gun one really needs.

If you sold your 58s you're automatically disqualified from belonging to this forum. Sorry, we have our standards.

I now have a third .41 coming.
I bought a Henry Steel Carbine in .41 in 2019 and asked my LGS to be on the lookout for a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 for me.
I then found a 1980 vintage .41 Blackhawk with 6.5" barrel at a pawnshop last March. I'd forgotten about the gun shop.

Monday the fellow at the gun shop called me and said he'd found one for me, a new 4.62" barrel one.
It took me a millisecond to go from "But I already have..." to "Two're better!).
I went in and bought it, I'll pick it up next Monday.

Took the MixMaster Dan Wesson to the range tonight... just for a quick spin...

50 rounds of 210grn Sierra JHP's over a nice charge of W296... cartridges I loaded nearly 10 years ago!

I also shot a few of my 215grn cast bullets over Unique, but they didn't have the fans going, and I wasn't digging the cloud of lead...

...so, the silly thing can shoot!

Picked up a 1977 vintage 4 5/8" Blackhawk off GunBroker last week...came in the other day and there is no evidence of it being fired... Face of the cylinder is totally clean and nothing but dust around the flashgap... Some turnline and tiny scratch on the topstrap are it...
Nice!
I love my Blackhawk .41. The one I found was also unfired, 1990 if I remember well.
Great gun, but I wish the internals were less complex. A .41 Mag SAA would be awesome! Same size as the Blackhawk.
Sure, coil springs are better, but there is something to say about the simplicity of flat springs and SAA internals.
Maybe coil springs could be used in a simpler manner, I don't know.
My next revolver will be a SAA clone. New Blackhawks are too expensive here ($1600).
Except if I stumble upon a S&W 41 Mag; very unlikely. I got my Blackhawk cheap ($550) because cases are nearly impossible to find in France (I got 200).
