.41 Mag Association

For anyone that is looking for a Ruger Blackhawk in 41mag. Bass Pro Shop in had a used one for sale in Sevierville TN.

Hello. New member here, with my first .41 Mag, a brand new (NOS) 1990 Blackhawk. I just reloaded six cartridges with the MP 41 Hammer 210gr HP bullets over 8gr of Vectan Ba9 (eq Unique). Unfortunately the range doesn't reopen until Sep. 2nd😭 Great catch for me here in France for $600, as the price of a new NMBH is $1500. I could only find 200 cases, but that will get me started.. Woohoo!

Since the forgotten middle magnum don't get much press I figured why not start a .41 mag association. This would be the perfect place to share favorite loads guns and so on. So lets go .41 addicts lets get this ball rolling.
Could be wrong, but some years ago I thought there was a “.41 Magnum Society” website with forums? …. No? 🤔

Congratulations on joining Club .41. I think that you will find the caliber to be fun to shoot as it is accurate and easy to load up or down to suit your needs. The 8.0 gr Unique/210 gr bullet load is a fantastic place to start. It lets you know you are shooting more than a .38 without beating you up, or putting wear on your Blackhawk, in the process.

I don’t know about powder availability in France. If all you can get is the Unique equivalent, then you will be ok for loading most anything you will want to do from the mild to upper-middle power ranges.

If you want to go to the high end of the .41 power spectrum, if H-110 is available to you then that is a great powder. H-110 is not as versatile as a Unique-type powder though, as H-110 does not do well loaded down. (The pressures can become erratic.)

My .41’s are a couple of Rugers and a S&W, I find them to be a lot of fun on the range. :D

When you get a chance to shoot it after 2-9, let us know how it shoots for you.

Stay safe.

Welcome Aboard! Thats a nice looking Ruger!

Starline has 41 Magnum brass in stock right now. I don't know what their shipping policy is concerning international orders but it might worth checking on.

Thanks, I'll email them in a couple weeks, being broke now, LOL. Cases are regulated here in France, so I'm not sure if customs would let them through. Maybe if Starline put a copy of my authorisation in the box... Starline's French importer did not reply to my email, but that's not surprising from a French business...

Hi, unfortunately we don't have access to any U.S. Powders that I know of.. We can get Vihtavuori however, and N110 would be a good choice for Magnum loads. Vectan makes a powder that is equivalent to N110, and that is Ba6-1/2. The loads listed on their respective web-sites are identical, and i mean, cut & pasted. I just happen to have a pound of Ba6-1/2 :) which I use for 300 Blackout subs. Vectan SP3 might be a good choice too. if VV N110 is similar or equivalent to H110, then Ba6-1/2 should be very close to H110, but I have to be very cautious with that sort of assumptions. The loads listed by Vectan and Vihtavuori, for a 210gr XTP bullet, go from 15.7 to 19.8gr. I only shoot cast bullets... I think I'll try 18gr of Ba6-1/2 with a 215gr bullet for a medium load, and 8gr of Ba9 (eq Unique) with a 210gr for a somewhat light load.

I also ordered coating powder from the U.S. and will try coating for the first time. That should allow me to push my cast bullets a bit without leading.

I will report my experiments with Vectan powders here. I have a Chrony, but setting it up at the range might prove difficult. These people are not very accommodating when it comes to anything not being "sporting-like." As mentioned before, unfortunately I can only shoot at the range... They might take issue to "loud" loads too...

Always use factory published loads from your powder companies to start with, you are correct not to assume powder data cross over even though product numbering or “ burn rate chart” numbers may be similar.

I hope to start powder coating bullets myself this fall. There are lots of guys on THR who do, I suggest you amble over to the reloading forum with an how-to request and they will help you out from start to finish.

You may make a friend or two working at your range if you let them fire some shots through your exotic magnum. After a few shots, they probably would be interested to learn the velocity/energy generated from that cool gun you just let them fire. Of course that can only be gauged with numbers from a chronograph, so you’ll have to set it up to be sure. ;)

Good luck!!

Stay safe.

Now that is a good idea, thanks :) That's a long shot, but worth a try. They might think that if they shoot anything but 38 wadcutters cats are going to lay with dogs and their wives are going to grow hair in weird places...

Sounds as if you are a handloader, and as a .41 Mag guy, you had better be.

I retired my membership in the .41 Mag club a few years ago, due to aging out.
I've been a revolver guy for only 20 years or so...been a 1911 guy since, I don't know, maybe 1962 or so?

Anyway, lots of .38 Spl and .357 Mag, then .44 Spl and .44 Mag.
And then .41 Mag...a magical point in life.

At or near that time, I also got into .45LC. More magic.

As I grew older, my wrists were a bit less tolerant of Magnum loads, so I had to make a choice....41 Mag or .45 LC?

I went with .45LC and have not regretted it a bit. (Okay, I will admit to missing the .41 Mag from time to time, but I really don't regret my choice. I can still go to the range and put 50 rds of .45 LC through my S&W M-25.)

Anyway, enjoy the .41 Mag....it is a great cartridge.
But when you get older, and your wrists start to hurt, consider the .45 LC. Another great cartridge.

Here is a link for you gil...lots of good links and posts for everything .41...

Thank you! I found that one, read it all! I also did read the 84 pages of this thread :)

Oh yes, I am a big fan of the .45 Colt. I used to cast the RCBS 45-270-SAA bullet for it, still have the mold. Unfortunately I don't own a .45 Colt now, but I definitely plan on getting another one! My 45 was a Pietta SAA, but I didn't keep it long because it had a timing problem. I also had a conversion cylinder for my Pietta 1858. A few years later, I wanted an original Colt SAA but being back in France, I only found a .38-40. No regrets on the .38-40, it is a great caliber. Fast forward a few more years, I wanted another .45 SAA clone or a Blackhawk, so my 1897 SAA could enjoy a no-doubt well earned retirement (I only shot it 25 times). Problem was, no clone were available and a brand new Blackhawk in France is about $1500. I saw a used one in .41 Mag for $600. Having looked into that caliber before and finding it intriguing, I bought it. Turns out, the gun was actually new, but spent more than 30yrs in a store safe, seemingly forgotten. When the store went bankrupt, the whole stock was bought by another gun store and sold at a discount. 41 Mag is pretty rare in France, and I guess nobody wanted to buy it, hence the low price. I only found 200 cases. Hopefully I will find more, but I fear it won't be easy. Starline can't export them directly. They have a French importer but they haven't replied to my email. I will call them on the phone. They probably don't sell to the public, so I'll have to find a way to get them to order $ome for me, maybe send them to my LGS...

14 days before the range reopens 🥳

Having had a 41 since around 84 I can say that with sane loads those 200 cases will last you years. I have cases that I purchased so long ago I don't even remember when or where I got them. Some hardly have any writing on the heads.

My favorite bullets used to be the Remington bulk 200gr SJHP, after they discontinued them and I started casting I found the MP molds in a 640 profile to be outstanding. Not to say that there aren't many other great molds out there, just that those support my intended hunting uses. They aren't as cheap as others, but you usually get several pin options offered, which basically allows you to cast up to 4 or so different configurations of the same bullet.

Anyway enjoy the new toy, 41's are for a specific type of person who can appreciate greatness ;)

Well I thought the same thing when I seen em in a video and had to ask about them myself. They aren't cheap, but they are WELL worth the added cost living in the humidity around the Gulf Coast. They keep things tidy and all in one place.

Here is where I got mine, but this is for a case of nine, so you can shop around for only a couple OR just buy more molds to fill them up. :)

I looked on YouTube for the video for half an hour and started getting distracted. I liked how the fella had them all stored away in a roll around tool box with everything needed right at hand. Lookie here I found it and didn't even know it till I went back to close it down... well I had to watch a couple just in case but there it is...
