Why would you not carry a gun on vacation?

When I'm at home, I know where I am. I have a very good feel for security -- and I carry. When I leave home and go to unfamiliar territory, where I don't have a good feel for security, where turning the next corner could bring me to a place I probably wouldn't go if I were more familaiar with the area, I should leave my gun at home?

I was thinking about this...

If I take extra stuff on vacation, why not carry it here? People do vacation where I am at so it would be funny that they take extra here but carry less there. I take extra there but carry less here.

Unless you are roadtripping, I would not carry more. I would carry more in the car but otherwise not for me.

Why carry more on "vacation"??

Well, you've got a good point there. Like others have said, why would you vacation anywhere more dangerous than where you live? I guess in some aspects, for me anyway, the idea of a vacation is to get away from it all for a few days. This opens up the fact that I'm usually camping out in the hills going fishing and such. I do suppose that I take into consideration being armed differently depending on just where I plan to be. Locally and if on the road for work, my 1911 travels with me. When I head for the hills or out to a SASS match, I'm perfectly happy with my "cowboy" guns.

10-ring, what's a CBOB?
Thinking about when I'll be able to claim my firearms from the family safe and arm myself is a great thought. I'm 16, so I don't have rights.. Can't vote, can't carry, can't enlist, can't really vacation. But when I can, Me and mine will barely have room in the car for vacation gear-
CZ52, M44, FN police shotgun (already own these) and then hopefully
CZp-01, SKS, High-point pistols, CZ97, MOSS 590, Ruger Mk, 10/22, lots of ammo.
I disagree with those who say you should carry guns of one caliber when you aren't restricted. Assuming I might be in a Katrina-esque emergency, I want to be able to put ANY ammo I come across to good use. As long as it's suitable, anyway... You won't see me packin' 20ga, .17HMR and the like.:barf:

Is it really necessary to take more than your normal carry item on vacation, plus maybe an extra loaded mag or two? I don't foresee a full-out land-based invasion of the US happening while I'm on domestic vacation, so I shouldn't need more than a mag (or two at MOST) in the slim chance that I EVER have to use my carry gun as a civilian.

You're going on vacation, not deploying to Fallujah....on the slim chance you do ever use your weapon on vacation, it'll be in self-defense at close range....not neutralizing hostiles at 200 yds.
If you're going camping or hiking, or maybe to a cabin in a remote location, I can understand the extra weapon or two...but going on a normal vacation (tourist city, amusement park, beach town, etc. etc.), there shouldn't be any need for extra items...

Just my .02, though. YMMV.

I'm sorry to reply to your message after seven months, but if you're still around and catch the my response, consider this.

I once left my home for a week-long work related training in Phoenix to find myself in a city of 4 million people in the middle of the desert with city water that wasn't safe to drink. It's not hard for me to envision the need for some real firepower if the event had lasted longer or coincided with any number of other events.

As it was, the situation was resolved within a few days, which allowed the bottled water supply to take up the slack. I did see people fighting over water in stores though, and wipe the shelves clean in hours.

When I travel (flying vacation, work, errands to the big city) I most often carry a double-stack 45 + 4 mags in addition to my always CCW revolver. I also feel somewhat like an idiot for not having some sort of long gun in the car, but I'm not the kind to give my long guns to the wrong side because I left them in the car. If I carry it, I'm going to carry it. I'd leave the 45 in the car if I could do so without worrying about it, but that's just not the world we live in.

On a driving vacation, I bring my dogs, and if I have my dogs, they'll stand guard, and if they'll stand guard, I don't have to worry about theft, and if I don't have to worry about theft, I have might as well have a long gun or two. I probably want to do some shooting on vacation anyway.

One thing I might point out is, at home I have a safe full of guns. If I take a dozen on vacaton, I still have fewer than I have left behind. And I worry about them -- are they happy, locked up in that dark safe? Are they sad they can't come out and play until I get home?

And what if I see a coyote, or find a prairie dog town and don't have a varmit rifle with me?

It doesn't seem like all that long ago when I had a work related project take me to Long Beach, CA. I remember there was this "poor, unfortunate individual" by the name of Rodney something-or-other that the Police had beat the snot out of. That town was on fire!! I drove down in an old Dodge truck with a busted radio and had absolutely no idea what I was headed into. When I got there, everything was erupting around me. Low on gas and nowhere to get more, I found the place that I was headed and holed up there for the week till things cleared. I was darn sure happy to have my .45 along for the ride and a stash box of food and water etc. It was a life lesson in the need for being prepared for the worst. Sooner or later, it will pay off.

Last time I went to see the Mouse, I wore a Glock 20 and a Remington Model 51 in 380 acp in Thunderwear, with a Colt Python, an AR-15 and a Colt Lightweight Commander in the Jeep.

not so random a thought.....UNITED STATES united in what exactly.....drivers license/soc sercurity card/IRS......federal laws.......CCW federal check should make CCW like a drivers lincense...valaid in ALL 50 states. why should my ability to protect self & family ( & others) stop at my state line. i know i can jump through hoops & get 7 state permits that are recognized by 45+ other states....would you drive cross country if same rules applied to cars?????
end rant

Good rant....good point......now, what do we do about it?

I agree wholeheartedly with you. There just doesn't appear that most folks in this country give a darn any more. Certainly California has left all traditional values and patriotism in the the toilet.

Was on a work-related trip (3 months long) several years ago. Drove into the office I was working at one fine morning, radio off, and my boss in that office steered me to a television to watch the second airplane crash into a building in NYC. We watched the buildings fall, then had a meeting and they sent us home -- me back to my hotel. We stayed away from the office for almost a week.

Sure was glad I had brought a couple of guns with me. Who knew what was going to happen!

I've been wondering about this question too. Usually for me it's been my carry weapon and a backup. Usually one that takes the same mags.

I'm going on vacation in a couple weeks, though, and I've been toying with the idea of tossing my folding stock 870 in the bottom of the suitcase for Hotel Room Defense.

I've got a double barreled 12 gauge coach gun that has been on a couple of work trips to unfriendly areas with me. Broken down, it fits in a small gym bag and can be reassembled in less than a minute. I like this because it never gets noticed or questioned like a long gun normally would. It is great for anyone to use with very little training and shot size can be altered depending on the surroundings.

Why would you not carry a gun on vacation?
Maybe your ccw is no good where you are going? Maybe firearms are illegal where you are going?
And what if I see a coyote, or find a prairie dog town and don't have a varmit rifle with me?
you look at wild life and let it go? Why would you want to shoot it to start with? If you had a rifle but no licens you are asking for trouble and if your rifle was at home you wouldnt be buying a licens. But lets assume you are a decent person and get a licens to shoot sait critters, well I bet you would bring your rifle. So its kinda a mute question isnt it?

In most places I go, shooting a coyote is a laudable act.

I dont know I would like to go to Ireland and see where my Great x2 Grandmother grew up no guns allowed there. My Daughter would like to go to D.C. to the Capitol one day no guns allowed there.

My point is live life for what it is and drop the worry paranoia and tough guy attitude. You do not need a gun all the time it does not make you more safe and if a person is that affraid to be with out a gun maybe they should seek counciling

Oh almost forgot........Vern Humphrey
