Quick Draw - I don't think a sniper bolt is low enough to clear the ATI mount. You might need a PU mount to clear it. Or,check out Jim the Boltman. He makes a nice looking bolt that will clear the ATI mount. I haved one on order from him right now.

Time to bring this back up!

OK people, it's time to get back to the basics. It's time to get those Mosins out from the safe / cabinet / closet / home made trench. :p

Here's my adopted children:

I love that there is a mosin thread here.

I just purchased my first mosin at a gun show for $30. It's a pretty beat up sporterized 1937 Izhevsk M91/30. None of the numbers match, and the floor plate has had 3 different serial #'s. I wasn't looking for a sporterized mosin, and didn't plan on sporterizing one, but how could I pass up $30. It'll be a fun project to clean it up and see if it's in working order. I'll spend more on my next one.

Buying one this week...What do I look for?

I have really enjoyed the thread (you all have some beautiful examples) as it has been very informational. I have been all over the internet the last few days checking information and markings regarding the MN.

I would appreciate it if any of you would post the most important things to look for when buying a MN. I plan on getting my hands dirty inspecting them (dealer got a shipment of 40 of them) so I have no problem looking 'em over in great detail. (Gun Shop guy has no problem either) Will be buying next week. The rifles have to be the best value on the open market, period.

Thanks in advance,

Philoe

ok, for all you people who trick their mosins out, who makes 1, a good scope mount that fits in the rear sight base, (that holds zero) and 2, a good scope with long eye relief to accompany it (good quality that won't break the bank)

i'm probably asking for the moon on this one, but any suggestions??

Check out this place for a no-gunsmith mount that fits in the rear sight, but allows a regular eye relief scope. Looks pretty good!

I just ordered a rock solid scope mount. It requires drilling and tapping but looks to me like it's the most solid one out there. I'm gathering parts for a custom build with a heavy barrel, so I don't mind permanent modifications. My base rifle has a shot out bore that's lucky to get 6" groups at 100 yards. I'm ditching everything except for the action.

hey all! just got back from the local lgs and saw a gun there that really peaked my intrest they had it marked as unknown and i think it was a sprotsterized nagant m44 but not sure what would be the highest it could posably be worth and if its not too much trouble could some one post a pick of what a good bore would look like? thank you t george

Trying to decide what ammo to shoot out of my new to me 91/59, been checking out AIM and they have Russian,Polish and Bulgarian...which is better?

I would buy a variety of whatever you can find locally and see what your rifle likes best. Believe it or not, my Finn M39 likes the cheap Albanian crap the best out of all the surplus ammo I've tried. You just have to sort it first and throw out the ones with split necks and holes in the case  It shoots ok with Czech and poor with Bulgarian. My 91/30 hates the Albanian but likes Bulgarian and Czech

I haven't tried Russian surplus, but I hear it's good stuff. If you're not sure what your rifle likes and you can't get anything locally I'd just buy what's cheap.

OK, I need some Mosin eye-candy to get me past these dismal times.

What's changed in the last three months Mosin Nagant wise?

What new adoptions have you done? ;)

New here, and this is mine after I did some work to it:

I did also add a recoil pad, a shell holder and a bipod; I need to get a picture with the added stuff.

I got a Mosin 91/30 for Valentine's day:neener: My wife actually picked it out and suprised me with it. That and a sardine can full of Bulgarian ammo. I shot it enough last Monday to make the cosmoline under the front wood piece sizzle. I know I was supposed to clean it well first, but I just couldn't wait.

what to look for

Philobeddo wanted to know what to look for...
Well first off you will want to make sure the action is smooth not clunky, firing pin, trigger all work. This is all pretty basic stuff, but where the rubber meets the road as far as I'm concerned with MN's, is the bore... you want the sharpest cleanest... Not necessarily the shiney'est...

Here's a picture of mine, after much work, you can see the shiney spots are starting to appear, but pay attention to the sharp bore in the picture. I think this is why mine shoots 1 MOA ( sitting in a rest that is )

You can clean the wood, in any number of ways... ATI makes nice scope mounts, and also a bolt configureation, and Wally world sells scopes at prices that beat just about anybody...

At the end of the day you can spend < 300 bucks and have something that will outlast you and probably the next generation...

Here's mine..

PS I usually shoot with the bayonet attached.

I have a 1942 91/30 DDR and after I bought it I naturally took it all apart cleaned it and put it back together. When I put it back together I found that the front two stock bands were loose. Is there anyway that I could tighten those bands without buying new ones? Because I'de like to keep it all as original as possible.

Also, The finish is gradually chipping and I'm not really sure if it is original or redone. If it was redone I would refinish it myself better but my question is how do you tell if it's original?

Third question, what's one of the best scopes for the MN without a hefty price tag? I originally wanted a replica PU scope but they fetch a little more than I'm thinking at the moment. Thanks for your help in advance

Talked to a buddy of mine today and found out he was given a 38 when he went to get what turned out to be a Scattergun done 870 for a mere $125.

Sometimes I don't like my buddy....

Over the past few months a shop that I go to pretty frequently has had a crate of Mosin Nagants sitting out offering them for $129. Every time a crate was out I was there for something else. This morning I headed to the shop to pick up pistol mags. Right when I walked in the door I saw an open crate on he floor. I decided then and there to buy a rifle which would cost me pretty much what I was going to spend on the pistol mags, which I later found out weren't even in stock anyway. As I looked into the crate I realized that I knew nothing about these rifles.

I did know to try and find matching serial numbers and was having a difficult time finding them through all of the cosmoline. I kinda gave up on that and centered my attention on the condition of the wood, for starters, as the guns all looked comparable with the steel. I then looked at the factory stampings and not knowing squat about that I assumed that the big Russian star was probably a good thing. I had no way to check the bore so I left that for luck. The gun was distributed by R-Guns and came with the spike bayonet and all of the extras.

As it runs out I have a 1933 91/30 made at Tula. All of the serial numbers match between barrel, bolt, trigger group/mag, and butt plate. Mine is a hex receiver. The bore, before cleaning, looks almost identical to the photo shown by Franco2shoot, but without the shiney spots. Overall, the cosmoline is coming off slowly as the most harsh cleaner that I'll use is Simple Green.

Looks like I'll be watching Enemy at the Gates again tonight.

I made the leap into the world of Mosin Nagants. I had never been interested them before, but I just couldn't pass up on a chance for a good inexpensive surplus rifle. I think everyone is starting to see milsurp rifles dry up so I wanted to catch this before the prices started to rise. I picked up a very very nice M38 with all matching numbers. The bore is shiny bright and hasn't been counterbored. It came with a sling, ammo pouch, and 100 rounds of ammo for the nice price of $125. I think I got a pretty good deal out of this. What does everyone think?

Also, the pictures don't show the cleaning rod in the gun, I took it out and forgot to put it back. But I do have it.

$125 is an AWESOME price for something in that condition with all the goodies and 100 rounds.

That's one of the nicest condition stocks I've seen! Beautiful Mosin!

Well I didn't know if it was a deal or not. It felt like a deal to me and I guess that's all that really matters, but hearing other people say it was a deal makes me feel even better.

It is the original stock as well. I had been looking for an M38 for quite a while and they are hard to come by and the ones I did find were quite a bit more. I haven't got a chance to shoot it yet, but the guy I bought it from said it's dead accurate. With the condition the bore is in, I don't expect any problems.
