Over the past few months a shop that I go to pretty frequently has had a crate of Mosin Nagants sitting out offering them for $129. Every time a crate was out I was there for something else. This morning I headed to the shop to pick up pistol mags. Right when I walked in the door I saw an open crate on he floor. I decided then and there to buy a rifle which would cost me pretty much what I was going to spend on the pistol mags, which I later found out weren't even in stock anyway. As I looked into the crate I realized that I knew nothing about these rifles.
I did know to try and find matching serial numbers and was having a difficult time finding them through all of the cosmoline. I kinda gave up on that and centered my attention on the condition of the wood, for starters, as the guns all looked comparable with the steel. I then looked at the factory stampings and not knowing squat about that I assumed that the big Russian star was probably a good thing. I had no way to check the bore so I left that for luck. The gun was distributed by R-Guns and came with the spike bayonet and all of the extras.
As it runs out I have a 1933 91/30 made at Tula. All of the serial numbers match between barrel, bolt, trigger group/mag, and butt plate. Mine is a hex receiver. The bore, before cleaning, looks almost identical to the photo shown by Franco2shoot, but without the shiney spots. Overall, the cosmoline is coming off slowly as the most harsh cleaner that I'll use is Simple Green.
Looks like I'll be watching Enemy at the Gates again tonight.
