Since purchasing my 91/30 the beginning of the year I have had some much enjoyment at the range. Two weeks ago I splurged and put a really nice scope on it and now I'm poking holes in the orange button of my Shoot-n-see targets at 100 yards, and I'm no Vasilly Zeitsev... just your average shooter trying to do things correctly.

As I keep asking questions, it seems to me there are quite a few of us on the High road. So that we don't bore the other members to death with our questions, I'm wondering if we shouldn't have a MN user thread?

BTW this MOA shooting was done with el cheapo Bulgarian ammo.

I just cleaned mine up on Sunday after getting it on Friday. Hope to shoot it in a couple of weeks, I will be using commercial and then handloads. FMJ rifle isn't allowed on our range but I planned on handloading anyways so not a huge deal to me.

It cleaned up well, took me about a pint of paint thinner and about 2 hours of time.

The barrel was dirty, but rifling was very much still there. After about 30 minutes, a lot of patches, shooter's choice and bronze brushing and the bore is ready to shoot. I think it could use some more brushing and a few more patches though. I am happy that the rifling is still there, still looks good and I don't see any nasty pitting or other bore damage. Even the muzzle looks to have its rifling intact.

I have not refinished the stock at all, may or may not on this one, probably another M44 in my future though so I may try my hand at that soon.

I would say that you can't buy a new firearm with this level of quality for less than $300 or $400 dollars.

I'm in for this. I've had an M44 for a couple of months now. I've always scoped anything I shoot regularly, because I'm right handed, but left eye dominant. I put a long eye relief scope on a mount over the rear leaf sight, i.e. a "scout" configuration. The last time I had it out I was shooting three-shot, 2" groups at 100 yards with it.

I like the shorter size of the M44. I think its the best value in guns going these days.

I have both a 91/30 ('42dated receiver)and a M44 ('44 dated receiver)both are wonderful shooters. Shooting good groups on pumpkinks a few months back at around 120ish yards. Fun shooters and cheap. looking to purchase more as I can. I'll post pics soon

Purchased mine with ATI modifications already there. It was 99 bucks. I removed the ATI rail and shot it with the Iron sights, but my tired eyes couldn't see where the shots were landing. A trip to WallyWorld, and purchase of a 120 buck 4.5-18x50mm Bushnell scope, then back to the range. To my absolute amazement, this weekend, I was tearing out the Orange dot at 100 yards. This is astonishing for me, I'm not that good. The rifle'ing is still good on mine, and I was feeding it some 3rd world (Bulgarian or Hungarian) yellow tipped, steel cased ammo, very light recoil. I removed all oil and re-stained, and buffed out the furniture such that it looks like a museum piece albeit a very accurate one. Its a year older than me 1943 from Ishemash arsenel. What a find!

Hope to add more to the collection at some point.

Mine: Ishevsk M44, dated 1946, almost all matching numbers-receiver, magazine plate(err..) and bolt all the same, buttplate different. Don't have a cleaning rod or sling yet, hope to fix that at upcoming gun show. If not, then I'll order them online. Heck, I didn't even really know they had a cleaning rod when I bought this. :p
Tried the shim trigger job, all it seemed to do was make the trigger flop around alot. I think I got lucky on the trigger though, or maybe I just don't know better. Either is a viable conclusion. Nice tight shiny bore. Need to shoot it for groups now that we have a good range setup at the in-law's place.

There may be 'better' rifles out there, but the Mosin just feels right in my hands. I'll be getting more, for sure.

I'm curious as to how the buttplate is the one piece that seems to get lost or needs replacing. How does one loose a buttplate. There must be some alternative use for these that I don't know about. Do they make really good fishing lures, bottle openers? What possible alternate uses could they have served?

Franco2shoot - I imagine if done right, the butt plate from a mosin would make a helluva striper spoon for trolling:p. You'd be amazed at what you can make a lure from. Just your kitchen alone has atleast five items that have been used sucessfully as a lure.

You would think the butt plate would be the last thing to not match. Unless maybe that particular mosin did not have one and the butt plate was cannibalized from one that was in really bad shape. Who knows.

BTW, how does that mosin of yours shoot. Is it consistantly MOA?

Alright, the club I've been waiting for.

I need to take some good pictures of my two finns and my M44.

Good idea. These are my all-around favorite rifles, and they seem to be cropping up everywhere these days. My favorites are the Finnish M91's and M30's. They're the best of both worlds--the light weight, straight stock and balance of the Russo-Soviet designs with the accuracy and craftsmanship of the Finnish rifles. Never could warm up to the M39, though I've owned half a dozen. They're too thick in the wrist and barrel heavy.

This is my 1953 made polish M44, probably never issued.
Shot it last Saturday at 100m with bulgarian surplus stuff it shot very accurate.

And this is my current "project gun" it's a finnish M24 civil guard rifle. I'm refinishing the stock now.

As you can see it one of those "german contract" barrels for the finns. The barrel was couter bored but the rifling is still sharp and in good condition.
I can't wait to shoot it soon:D

Ok, I've got a question I keep forgetting to ask.
How do I know what the sight settings are? For example, I see alot of folks reference the 100yd, 200yd, etc sight settings. My rear sight has a 1-10. I have no idea what any of that means. I looked around, but didn't see it actually explained. There's a lot of posts to try and pick through, though.

Also, some add-on questions.
Anyone try those mojo sights? They're appealing at first glance since they seem non-permanent, and don't drastically alter the appearance of the rifle.

The 1-10 is the distance of units of 100 metres. 1=100, 4=400, etc. Note that it is METRES, not yards, we're dealing with the metric system here. There's no real difference worth talking about, really, at the ranges a Mosin is accurate to.
My M44 fires 3in groups at 150 yards, when I'm good enough.....

Just a humble suggestion... you might want to establish at the outset of this thread if this "club" is limited to or directed towards those that have kept their MN's in historical condition -- to the exclusion of those who have, for lack of a better term, "bubba'd" them, or modified them in permanent a fashion.

If everyone is welcome and the primary focus is "how do you enjoy your MN", then lectures on historical value are not in the spirit of the club. If this is about preserved or restored guns, then pictures of hacked up and painted versions are probably not welcome.

Just a thought.

Depending on your POV, doing this at the outset could save Cosmo from having to spank anyone. :)

1= 100 meters on most Mosins but it can mean 100 Arshins on M91's, which are an archaic unit of old Russian measurement. It's the same system that came up with "lines" as in "three line rifle." On converted Finnish sights the arshins are crossed out and replaced with meters.

The Mojos are good, though I prefer the original single aperture system to the newer more complex ones.

I don't mind. That's what the Special Hell is for ;-)

yes lets get a club together. i bought a 1946 M44 russian 2 days ago, took it to the range for the first time yesterday and put the first round down the range. ran the bolt and noticed i was missing the extractor. so i took it back to big 5 and exchanged it for another M44 with matching numbers as well as russian made and its a 1948 year.

so i went through it today cleaned out all the cosmo for the second time in 2 days and now i can't wait to get to the range.

here is the second one, numbers matching and cleaned.

also i know of the S&S and such mounting solutions for a scope, but i just need a settup for 50-100 yard shooting. im looking for a recomendation for a scope and mount, i cannot drill into the reciver. i like the S&S or whatever that takes place of the rear sight but have herd a few problems with it. so if anyone can toss out some ideas it would be apreaciated.

If you put your target at 200 meters you should move it up to "2" and so on.

Of course. :)

Just that the area I shoot at we have set up for 100yds or so, out on the in-law's land, so it'll be pretty rare I ever shoot further than 100yds.
