What guns would you have?

almost all of my family already have guns. that said i might take some flak over my choices,

1. sks- for the men who shoot decent and highpoint pistol
2. mossberg 500- for the lousy shots and a highpoint pistol
3. highpoin carbin- for the women, and a highpoint pistol
4. mosin 91/30- for the good shots and a highpoint pistol

the highpoint pistols are very reliable accurate out to combat distances and cheap. the rest is self explanatory.

Actually, I completely agree with you. Those are great choices for arming a group of people with limited funds. I would say that each of those will give you maximum effeciency for minimum coin, and they all use relatively cheap ammunition that is readily available.

I've thought about this a little. I'll be retaining my AR, mainly because I will have paid as much for it as 4 of my other rifles combined. I'll probably also hold onto one of the mosins for work requiring a larger projectile. The other mosin will go to an experienced marksman who can really utilize it, and handle the recoil. The SKS and M1 Garand can go to anyone, even slightly less experienced shooters, since they're semi-auto. I'll also be carrying my Sig P6, and thats about it. My .22 bolt rifle might come along, probably left to the least experienced or smallest (stature wise) member of the resistance team. My other pistols aren't really suitable for fighting.

This is all assuming my current collection. I'm expecting to have to grab my gear and roll out quickly, and not have time to stop by Gander Mtn for more supplies.

I already own the firearms of my choice for daily carry and emergency duty. The selection is endless and the final choices are all personal, relative to familiarity, finances, and tactical philosophies. Commonality should also be considered in reference to whose weapons you will be liberating from their former owners, whether it be friend or foe. Time for that Advil, huh?

Lot's of good ideas here, however I think that in any small scale skirmish, you have to think of the battlefield in terms of a layer of rings. High Power rifles for the long distance threats of 250 yards or more, so you would be talking about .50 BMG (expensive), .338 Lapua (also fairly expensive) .300 win. mag. (moderate expense) 30.06 (affordable weapons & ammo also very common), .308 win, and finally .280 or .270 (also affordable weapons & ammo .270 ammo more readily available). Intermediate range - weapons like assault weapons AR's, AK's, SKS's for your intermediate ranges 250 yards to 75 yards. Close range weapons shotguns and .22 LR for 100 yards and under. CQB and "In your ****" ranges handguns .44 mag, .357 mag, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, 9mm Luger. This is a good example of defensive weapons and ranges if you are in a fixed position against superior numbers in defensible positions.

Most of these weapons can be had at fairly reasonable prices. If $$$ are the limiting factor, personally I would select a proven platform in shotguns like Mossberg 500/590 or Remington 870/1100. A good rifle like a good used Remington 700 or, I know this will be controversial Remington 7400/742 that's proven in calibers like 30.06, .308, & .270 win. The point in selecting is what you're effective and comfortable with and what platform will have ammo readily available w.t.s.h.t.f. One other criteria you have to consider is how many people will have to be outfitted? Will you have to hump all this weaponry long distances? How much ammo will you be able to carry on your person if you have to bug out. In a bug out situation you have to consider weight, because I guarantee you after 15 to 20 miles of hard humping in a day, you are definitely going to want to lighten the load. If you are being pursued, you will lighten your load and the last thing you are going to want to leave behind is your weapon. Lot's of people bitch about our military going to the 5.56mm as our primary infantry weapon, but the fact of the matter is, is that you can carry a lot of rounds that are effective out to 300 meters by your average shooter with moderate training. It's the jack of all trades weapon particularly if you have to hump weapons, ammo, and field supplies for long distances. Sidearms - (Please see above) One or any combination of the above could be suitable depending upon the person. If you have minimally trained people in the group, you can't go wrong with shotguns using a combo of slugs and buck or bird shot. If using birdshot I wouldn't go any smaller than no. 4 or 5 shot. However whatever you have on hand would be better than nothing. Maintaining these weapons will be a factor that should also no be over looked. The simpler the better if dealing with moderate to minimally trained individuals. Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm not spending a lot of money on folks who:
#1. don't have the presence of mind to ARM THEMSELVES
#2. can't shoot
Every person I know who can shoot owns guns they know how to shoot.

If I'm arming people who can't shoot, they get very cheap rifles like M44's and very cheap shotguns like Maverick 12gauge. They're durable enough & accurate enough to do the trick, & if the S is hitting the F for long enough & they want to "upgrade", they're more than welcome to scalp off of their kills.
I'm not inclined to give people who can't shoot handguns since they will probably be better off with the long gun with the longer sight radius, but if I must they will be very cheap used 4" barrels probably .38

well lets start with what I already have

AR-15 with two fully loaded thirty round mags

870 Remington HD with side saddle and and twenty five round belt

Saiga in 7.62x 39 with loaded thirty round clip and 5 rounder

Two Glocks with a couple mags each one in 40 the other 357 sig With Spare 40 barrel

Ruger LCP and a spare mag

400 rounds of 7.62, a couple hundred rounds of shotgun shells, approximately 500 rounds of 40 S&W, a couple hundred rounds of 357 sig, 250 rounds of 380 and 10 spare 30 round mags and several hundred rounds of 223 That is just what is in my car right now that travels to and from work with me everyday. Don't worry, my work place is 33 miles south from home and the range is 6 miles south of there.

I bought one of those three gun bags that hangs off the back of your front seats for my Toyota Matrix and the two rifles and the shotgun ride in that. Quick access and it is almost invisible, I love it. The Glock and the LCP are pretty much always on me and I usually keep another along also.

In addition to what rides in the car I have a second AR-15, a Mossberg 590 with speedfeed stock soon to be equipped with a a 6 round side saddle in the closet fully loaded. I have about 18 mags in total for the two Glocks and plenty of ammo on hand. In a pinch I could definitely put the several Norinco 97s and double barreled shotguns into service along with my lever guns and Cowboy pistols. i have plenty of rifles that are quite capable of long distance work as well.

Wow, nevermind my previous question. Compared to Popeyespappy, I haven't even begun to prepare. Just curious Popeyespappy, how long did it take you to stock up on all of that stuff? $$$ must not be a problem for you at all.

so I just watched "Defiance" and remembered this thread, keep em coming as now I think I will actually do this and buy a bunch of sks's, mossy shotguns and highpoint product:) maybe some/a lot of m44's.

I understand and even agree with the sentiment, but I have stumbled into one exception. My wife's kids. I will not put her in a position where we have to turn away her kids. They're to young to prepare for themselves anyway. And, her X (who has custody) has spoiled them to the point that they will not see the need for many years now. But, I just could not look into her in the eyes and say, "Sorry your kids have to go and take their chances."

Not saying I'm going to coddle them, nor even try to pick them up during the bug out (we have a small group one of which has a place), but if they can make it to the safe area I'll be ready to arm and feed them.

Same goes to a lesser extent for my foster son. He hasn't lived with me for many years, but I couldn't send him away. He's entering college this year, and couldn't do anything much if he wanted.

My neighbors that want me to pay for our mutual fence because they have no money yet just paid 6/ft for new flooring are SOL, but the kids who haven't/can't prepare yet. I'm gonna have to help them out.

As to actual weapons, I'm sticking with NATO rounds, and weapons just for parts/ammo issues. Even though I realize that as Sam Eliot said in We Were Soldiers when asked about drawing an M-16, "Times comes I need one there'll be plenty of them laying on the ground."

An AK variant, M4/AR variant, a good shotgun, a good bolt action .308 rifle and a good Glock pistol...Of course thousands of rounds for each weapon :)

Lets see where I am at so far,

2 M1 garands
5 ar 15's
2 30 cal hunting rifles scoped
multiple handguns semi auto
1 ptr 91
p90
multiple shotguns...

I think I got it covered, working on a steyr AUG A3 and a couple of AK47's

However since most of my neighbors are idiots I wouldn't arm them anyways, I am the zombie apocalypse go to guy for my friends.

Several years ago I was forced to make a 180 degree turn in collecting, I had a very extensive collection of U.S. military guns that I had to sell most of due to major financial problems. :( So when the dust settled and I had only a few remaining pieces I knew that there was no way that I could rebuild that collection at the prices that these weapons were know selling for so I made the decision to start collecting modern military rifles, with part of the justification being "what if I had to arm my family and friends".
All of my siblings are gun owners and collectors, and my brother-in -law is a SWAT team member so they are all prepared. My in-laws are not gun owners other than two of my wifes brother-in-laws and I now live on her family land so the need to arm others could present it's self.
All of my long-time friends( some more than 25 years) have always known that if the SHTF they know where to go.
So I sold off the remaining pieces and began the new collection, as it turns out the beauty of this is that I have many guns with common calibers and some interchangable magazines and because they are military they are reliable and some of them were designed for use by fairly untrained pesents. :)

Colt SP-1 AR-15
Colt AR-15 A2
Colt CAR-15 Carbine
CETME
HK-91
HK-93
HK MP5
AK-47
RPK
AK-74
FN FAL
5.56-3,000 rounds
5.45X39-2,160 rounds
7.62X39-2,500 rounds
7.62 NATO-1,500 rounds
Plus three tactical 12 ga shotguns and several hunting guns including two scoped magnum caliber rifles, two pump shotguns, one auto shotgun, three .22 rifles, and I almost forgot the two 1911"s. I think that that should do until we start picking theirs up off of the ground.

This is this! It's not something else, it's this

ALWAYS REMEMBER OUR MEN AND WOMEN OVER THERE.

I choose ARs anyway because in the event of a total and complete breakdown of society, there will be people with the know how to convert an AR into an M16.

I think there are about two situations in which full auto has value in an M-16.
Neither one matters much, in my opinion. If you're picking your SHTF rifle for that reason, I don't think that's a good reason.

Mossberg 12GA shotguns. Granted Mossberg isn't my favorite shotgun but they're about the easiest gun I know to use which comes in handy for people that you've tried to teach on more than one occasion how to load/operate firearms that use mags and they still don't remember.

I am here:

4 AR-15 (3 AR and 1 M4) in 5.56
1 AR-15 in 22lr
1 SiG 550 in 5.56
1 Ak in 7,62x39
2 M1 Garand in 30-06
1 Mossberg 500
5 9mm pistols
4 Winchesters in 38, 357 and 44.40
+ some other goodies I'd rather not talk about ;)

btw, you should read Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse --

some good infos in there.

My family is small but we can cover 360 degrees of open killing field around our old farm house with four AK's. Throw in my Rem 700 30-06 for distance and a couple of Rem 870's if the fighting got close. Our side arms would be SIG 229 .40's simply because that's what we shoot for fun and everyone here is familiar with them.
