I have had this talk with freinds First I will tell you what I have.
An M-14 made into a sniper rifle by Israel. An FAL, Sig 556 w/ 1.5x ACOG, Mk 12 clone, and My Personal AR. 16" barrel, CTR stock, ta31trd ACOG, single point sling, etc. plus a few other ar's, hunting rifles, a few hand guns both combat and hunting.
Now all of my freinds and family either are shooters, or at least has taken instruction on how to safely handle firearms. I am a certifited NRA instructor, former military, and most of the people in my life are well aquatainted with guns. It seems that I have less and less intrest in sheeple anymore. So as former infantry team leader, I understand some of what is required to take a gun moron, and make them almost into an asset. So my advice, get the best guns you can possibly afford (how much is your life worth, more than a new X box? or new car?) and take NRA instructor classes. Then you will know how to properly teach the untrained and that is the best thing that you can do for them, and hell it might be good for you too! On side note don't forget the 30-30. Its just as fast as a pump shotgun, and you don't get funny looks. Plus they are cheap, simple and reliable.
Now according to Mel Tappan he says for each group of survivors you need basicly this
One battle rifle per person and a spare for every two.
one combat pistol for each person , spare per two.
Several hunting rifles for group. After all you can't all go sit in the woods all day anymore!
Combo Varmit- sniping rifle
one combat shotgun per two.
There is more to what he says but I would just sujjest that you buy his book. Its far out of print but a classic. title is "Survival Guns" the best ever written even if dated and I dissagree with some of it.
Shung is correct Patrioits is a Great book. if you read that and survival guns you will know what to look for. Then get freinds who will BYOG's
