I have 10mm Double Tap 200 gr XTP/JHP's, which are
classified as a "hunting round" (1300/700) and I think
if you're carrying this (in the woods) you're "OK" for 2
or 4 legged animals....
I practice drawing and firing 2 rounds from my Taurus .454 casull into
a target, at 25 feet (accurately) in 2 seconds, so I'm "ready" if I get
charged by an animal. Now, I've never been "charged" by any wild
animals, (except a porcupine, who I blasted) so though I believe I
won't "choke"...
In a gunfight, lighting conditions can change, and night sights
fill that possible void in visibility; also for a nightstand pistol,
you could be firing at your night intruder "silhouettes",
and night sites afford a good aim.
I carry my SW Valor 5" 10mm all day every
day (concealed) in a IWB pancake holster,
on a 3/16" thick 1 1/2" wide leather belt -
comfortable, unseen and ready to go.
I got a Florida CCW in 2004, and most of the "class" failed the
simulated (projection) shooting scenario, and missed too many
hits on the target - but they still were given a permit....
For most of America, it's not where you live, but where you go. The
"ne'er do well's" tend to "go for you" in the parking lot at markets,
ATM's, and other "public places"; that's where you need to have
your head on a swivel and your pistol on your side.
I've been "disciplined" in (reasonably limiting) my gun purchases by
my "I'll only buy a gun if I get it for a steal" code. I do have quite a few,
guns because I've managed to get A LOT of "steals", though I certainly
would have MORE (guns) without my "code" in force.
Besides my 1911 in the glove box and 12 gauge in my trunk,
I also keep a collapsible baton and a USMC Kabar under my
seat and a gas mask in my trunk. I like to be prepared to
"express myself" when required...
My DW Valor 10mm CCW
I keep a stainless Colt Defender .45 acp in my glovebox,
and a Mossberg 12 gauge (7 +1) with a "Bird's Head"
grip and (attached) 14 round bandolier shoulder strap in
my trunk, in a hard case.
ALSO, there are some FFL's (I experienced) which aren't
keen on you doing a thorough inspection of the weapon
before performing the actual transfer. I suggest you make
sure that isn't an issue with the FFL before you use them.
Here's a site where there are excellent (these days) prices
on ammo. I live in the area, so it's also convenient (for me),
but even with shipping the prices are pretty good.

I've heard negative comments about Pro Mags, but I've found
(the excellent) Magpul mags for comparable prices, so why
even buy Pro Mags ?
I bought 100 - 30 round Magpul Gen 2 for $800 several months
ago (that's $8 each) from Mag Commander, and they have low,
low prices RIGHT NOW on Magpul...
I have several "pretty guns" which I bought because I got them for a
great price/trade. I got them as an investment, they're worth a lot more
than I paid for them, and I'll never shoot them.
