NYH1!

I see a lot of overlapping cartridges in the lists. To me, the 6.5x55, 243, 257, 7mm, 30-06, and 308 all serve about the same purpose. Good medium game medium range cartridges all of them.

Based on what is in the ammunition locker, my choices would be:

Small bore;
22LR
22 Hornet

Medium bore;
6.5x55
32 WCF
405 WCF

Large Bore
45-70
50-70

The only rifle cartridge I would like to add to the list would be the 45 long Colt chambered in a single shot similar to the Ballard or that scaled down Rolling Block. A nice lightweight rifle with good ballance and handling qualities.

Realistically, the 32 WCF and the 6.5 do not get any field time anymore and will likely go down the road. They are good but fall into that overlap category. Heck, the role of the 45-70 is easily covered by the 405 and the 50-70 but I really like the Trapdoor so it stays.

Not 10 cartridges but 5 that will certainly cover any shooting situation I contemplate.

This thread is seriously lacking .357 magnum. :scrutiny:
I think since this was the rifle country forum, most of us assumed it was 10 favorite rifle cartridges. If we are to include handguns and shotguns, I think we need to start over with a new thread!
If so, here would be the modified version:
1. 12 ga
2. 9mm
3. 357 Mag
4. 45 ACP
5. .17 HMR
6. 22 lr
7. .223 Rem

Since this is Rifle Country . . .

1. .22 Long Rifle - paper punching to pest control
2. .30/06 - Good choice for all thin-skinned, non dangerous game world wide, short of eland & giraffe.
3. .375 H&H - Good choice for everything else, up to & including elephant.
4. .458 Lott - My #1 choice for a "stopper" rifle in a bolt action, considering both ballistics and ammo. (You can use standard .458 Win Mag . . . )
5. .475 NE No. 2 - Though .470 may be more practical, this is my choice for a "stopper" rifle in a double barrel, should I ever get one.
6. .223/5.56 NATO - ubiquitous choice for the AR platform, and a good varmint round.
7. .308/7.62 NATO - when a poodle shooter just isn't enough
8. 9mm P - OK, a subgun is almost a rifle, and a suppressed subgun (e.g., HKMP5SD) makes for an excellent home defense arm.
9. .338 Lapua - a great round for long range sniping, without the weight of a .50.
10. 57mm Recoiless - The U.S. M18 was the first deployed platform designed to fire a modern cannon round from the shoulder. A 3-lb explosive shell at 1200 ft/sec is pretty impressive, even today. ;)

Centerfire Rifle Only...I hate to limit myself.

.222
.220 Swift
6mm PPC
6mm BR Norma
6.5 x 284
.270 Win
.308 Win
9.3x62 (very underrated for hunting).

It's a shame to leave 50 BMG out...but too much recoil, noise, and muzzle blast for my taste.

I hate to leave out 6.5x55, 280, 260, 264 Win Mag, 6.5-06, and 257 Roberts AI....So many cartridges, so little time.

1) .22 LR

5) 30-30
6) 9mm Luger
