I handload for 60 different cartridges, but my favorites to shoot are:

223 [accurate and kills rodents way out there]
270 [ kills ruminants way out there]
7mmRM [kills ruminants way out there]
22LR [requires no handloading, can be made quiet, and kills things]
12 ga [ kills things flying]
380 [fits in my shirt pocket]
9mm [fits in my jacket pocket]
6mmBR [accurate]
257 Roberts AI [accurate]
45 long colt [fun to shoot]

In 2012 I will build more 7mmRemMag rifles for me.

30.06, 6.5 creedmoore, 280, 7mm STW, 220 swift, 22.250, 8mm mauser, 308, 243, 223 and not in that order but close. ;)

8mm mauser(not getting any other love?)
12 ga slugs
7.62x54r
.22 lr cuz it's just pure cheap fun
.223/5.56
.22-250
.45-70 gov
.338 lapua
And that's all I got so I'm gonna add 8mm Mauser again because it's just sweet

10 is too many

Rifle cartridges? These six will cover everything but the big five dangerous game animals. Yes, the 8mm Mauser is a wonderful cartridge, and I have one, but so are many others. I struggled having to leave .257 Roberts and 7x57 off my list. If you must have a lever action cartridge then add the .30-30.

.22 LR
.223
6.5X55
.30-06
.338 Winchester
.375 H&H

What's your 10 favorite cartridges just cause..no reasoning , costs, or actually owning it..if I could put 10 new guns in the safe that I just had to have what would they be?
Based on the forum we are in, I've limited this to rifle cartridges. So, how do these ten sound?
  1. .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire
  2. .22 Long Rifle
  3. .22 Hornet
  4. .223 Remington
  5. .257 Weatherby
  6. .30-30 Winchester
  7. .30-06 Springfield
  8. .338 Winchester Magnum
  9. .375 Holland & Holland
  10. .45-70 Government
A few that I considered but which didn't make the cut included .22 WMR, .270 Win, .308 Win, and the .50 BMG

.260
.308
.30-30
.300 win mag
.338 edge
.45-70
.50 BMG

Hard choices. In no particular order (for rifle):

22 lr
22 WRM
223 Rem
243 Win
6 mm Rem
270 Win
7 mm -08
308 Win
30-06
375 H&H

My current favorite hunting guns are a Tikka T3 243, Ruger Frontier 308, and a Ruger No.1 RSI 30-06.

While the question was not asked, the most likely to be carried (depending on the situation) handgun rounds are:

22 lr (rattle snake medicine and tin can killer)
22 WRM (hunting sidekick and PD)
380 (PD because of the handy size)
44 Mag (in case there are bigger cats or javalinas causing a nuisance).

I'd go for a good spread and good ammo availability:

22LR
5.56
7mm-08
30-06
300 WinMag
375 H&H
9MM
45 ACP
20G
12G

1. .204 Ruger (varmint buster)

2. .223 Rem/5.56x45mm NATO (I love my AR)

3. .243 Win (great starter rifle, also very capable in the deer woods)

4. .30-30 Win (tried and true cartridge, and I do love lever guns)

5. .308 Win/7.62x51mm NATO (Great all-around cartridge)

6. .300 Win Mag (largest caliber I have shot, capable of taking all North American game)

7. 12 ga (from birdshot to buckshot, this can take care of most any problem)

8. 9mm (great pistol round, little recoil, powerful enough for self defense)

9. .45 ACP (taking the fight out of enemy combatants for 100 years, my personal favorite pistol round)

10. .22 LR (because target practice and fun shouldn't cost an arm and a leg)

Those were not in order by favorites, but by rifle (1-6), shotgun (8), pistol (8-9), and then the .22 LR is either rifle or pistol so it went last.

My needs are fully met in these rifle cartridges.

1. 5.56
2. 458 SOCOM
3. 22lr
4. 300WM

I cant imagine needing 10.

I don't have 10, but I'll make a list of 10 out what I have(and they're all great cartridges) and then some I still want:

Have
1: .22LR
2: .308 Win
3: 8mm Mauser
4: 7.62x39mm
Want:
5: .338 Lapua magnum
6: .50 BMG
7: 458 Socom
8: 45-70
9: 7.62x54R
10: .50 Beowulf

If I could count a 12ga rifled slug... those are frickin sweet!!

Edit: I thought this was 10 best RIFLE cartridges..

I'll likey pare mine down to...

.22LR
.223 Rem
.308 Win
.45 ACP Carbine
.458 SOCOM
9mm pistol
.45 ACP pistol
12ga s.g.
.410 bore s.g.
.375 H&H Mag -or- .458 Lott

ETA: I'm not advocating these as the 10 "best" cartridges... just that they're common/popular, effective for their given purpose, and different enough from one another to merit their purchase.

OK, lists are fun

  1. .30-06 Springfield
  2. .243 Winchester
  3. .45 ACP

Let's start with a basic battery. You need:

1. A small game/plinking/practice rifle -- the .22 LR
2. A varmit rifle -- the .223 is probably the best all around.
3. A "deer" rifle -- the .30-06 will handle everything in North America.
4. A "heavy" rifle -- the .375 H&H is "the .30-06 of Africa."

What more do you need?

A muzzle loader? How about a fast twise (1 in 28) .50 cal.
A light deer rifle -- say a .243 Win or similar cartridge?
A saddle carbine -- a .30-30.

I think I've named that tune in 7 notes.;)
