I would think quality built .357 revolver would be far better choice.

Why? A Glock in 10mm is about the same overall length as a 3" 357 revolver. A 357 can match 10mm velocity and power, but only in a 6" or longer barrel. When fired from 4" or less barrels the 10mm will beat 357 and do it in a lighter, smaller gun that is more reliable in dirty woods environments, more accurate in rapid fire and holds nearly 3X as many rounds.

If the 10mm doesn't have enough power to meet your needs skip right over 357 and go straight to the 44 mag.

I will always love my S&W .357's but jmr40 makes some good points.

this will simply be a "greatoutdoors" type of sidearm for me
Glock. Done. I guess, if you like revolvers, a S&W 610 (4 inch) would be a great choice.

But if you have a spare $3200 in your pocket, then definitely this:

I have a Glock 20 and 29, and a Smith 1006. I carried the G20 hiking. But what I want is the Nighthawk Custom Heine Long Slide (not necessarily camo).

Still, as an animal defense gun, a revolver has advantages: no slide going out of battery with contact shots, no jamming if the slide is in contact with something. And once we're into revolvers, there are a lot of better cartridges than 10mm.

That was the purpose behind mine.

The 1006 is a better gun, but it's also an out-of-production gun, and my example is in near-perfect condition. I'd like to keep it that way, which woods carry isn't conducive to. Use is one thing, abuse is another. I can use a gun heavily without damaging the finish, but tromping through the rockies after big game takes it's toll on guns.

My Kimber and Witness Limited? Also too pretty do go rolling down a hill with me.

The Witness Compact? Don't care about scratching it up, but for one, it is blued, and so rusts easily (always get wet hunting), and also only holds 11 rounds with the same loaded weight as the G20 holding 15.

The G20 is almost as reliable as the S&W, and I don't care if it gets marred. It's perfect for a hunting sidearm.

i am leaning away from wheel guns @ this point. Mostly leaning in the G20 direction but will have to shoot some different options before I can make up my mind.I like the "big gun with alot of bullets" idea. Also If I had that kind of money I would be investing in a Custom Sig in a 10 mm(sorry couldn't find a pic to post).

I've had a Colt Delta Elite for 22 years. A few years ago I put it in the safe to keep it's good looks and replaced it on the woods gun roster with a Glock 29. A little more packable, albeit fatter, and I don't have to worry about uglying up a Glock by banging it around in the woods. But truth be told, that Delta would be the last of my firearms to go.

That is one hideous and expensive gun. The beautiful 9mm German Sig 210 is only about $2200.

I love the 10mm. I've owned the 1006, 1086, 1066, Glock 20, Glock 29 and a pair of 610 4". I thought the 1086 had a better trigger out of the autos and one of the 610 was even better than that. I also owned one of the first Mectech 10mm uppers used it with a G20 lower. I reload so I had lots of fun with that. I owned all these back when I was a cop and carried all of them on duty at one time or another. Bladetech use to make duty holsters for the 610. The 10mm is an all around great cartridge but due to the initial hype of it being the one shot wonder round as it was touted when the FBI was issuing them and it not performing as all the gun writers at the time said it would it seemed to lose out to what it spawned, 40sw. Nice thing about the 10mm guns is that you can shoot 40 and 357Sig with a simple barrel swap.

Of the 10mms, I like the Peter Stahl the best. Longer barrel helps tame recoil and it is accurate to a fault. That said, it is definitely NOT my first choice as a hunting arm. I've got a total of five 10mm semi-auto handguns. The semis are the closest things to a .41Magnum there is in a carrying sized defesive handgun. My Desert Eagle in .41Magnum (movies and TV not withstanding) is just to large to CCW.

The semi-auto 10s are nice but I have better hadguns to hunt with in the vault. From mild to ultra-wild.

This will be a firearm used camping, hiking, riding, and maybe a hunting sidearm. I am not wishing to CC this weapon I have others I prefer for that but this will simply be a "greatoutdoors" type of sidearm for me. I have read the ballistics for this round and thats why I want.

Seeing as how you don't want to CC, for your purposes I'd say go for it! You know the obvious which is there pricey which is the major downside to 10mm, no question it's got the power you need.

If you're talking about the finish, they make it in blue steel. If you're talking about a long-slide 1911, well, can't please everyone.

Expensive? It's a custom 10mm. A Wilson "Classic" 10mm (no long slide) goes for more.

I've enjoyed my G20, coming from typically shooting 9mm. Recoil is mild compared to other 10mm platforms.

If you're reloading, though, make sure to work your way up to even the mid range loads, and it would be preferable to get an aftermarket barrel. I got pressure warning signs a fair way below some of the loading book maximums.

I was impressed enough with the Witness to consider replacing my .357 with a 10mm.
I like the G20 as well.

The Glock would probably make a better weapon for me, but I really dig the CZ platform.

What I like for the same uses the OP talks about is a .357 Magnum revolver, with warmish loads, but the Big Ten is a heck of a cartridge and there are more shots in the gun.

Ammo capacity being the advantage, doesn't it make sense to maximize it, and go for the pistol with the most shots?

Full disclosure dept: Though mostly a revolver guy, I like SIG-Sauer pistols and Glocks, and SIG doesn't make a 10mm. (You put an external safety on something and it isn't what I want for emergencies.)

Mach1V, Did you respring your witnesses? How about mag modifications?

The Limted has a 21# spring, but the Compact has OEM double springs, which I replace frequently (every 1,000 rounds or so). There are no extra power springs that will work on the compact.

Mag springs are +10% in both, no other mods to the mags.

On the compact, I did recontour and polish the extractor. Slide velocity under my full house loads is so fast that even the +10% spings couldn't overcome the extractor in time.
