Turning 30 this year and to keep with recent trends I want to get a gun from the wife. Max budget around 500 but that's not firm. Being a milestone birthday I kinda want to match it to caliber, so there is a wide range of possibilities in 30cal. I have a marlin 30-30 that I reload for already so the obvious choice is out. I like sleek and sexy, which is not tacticool. I also have a contender that I want more barrels for as it currently is 44 mag and is punishing. I also like single action revolvers so a Blackhawk in 30carbine would be ok, as would the 30 carbine because it still has character. I don't know what I want but it needs to be 30 cal. No need for another deer rifle either as I already have 3 plus the contender.

My initial thoughts are
#1-30-30 contender barrel and a pile of components
#2 Blackhawk 30carbine plus dies and smaller pile of components
#C m1 carbine plus dies and a handful of components

I am still way open to other ideas so long as it involves the number 30.

I don't think you can ever have enough rifles in .30-06:

I just had my 30th birthday on May 23rd so I completely understand where you are. I ended up with a 1955 S&W Highway Patrolman in .357. Has no connection to my age, but sure felt nice in my hand. I suggest just go find something you can't leave the LGS without.

You can get a Mosin Nagant rifle and about 1500 rounds of .30 caliber ammo (7.62x54mmR) for $500. As one of the greatest battle rifles ever made and arguably THE rifle that won WW2, it's hard to pass up! Loads of fun to shoot, and with surplus ammo hovering at about 20¢ per round you can afford to shoot it all day.

If you don't own AT LEAST one Mosin Nagant by now, do yourself a favor and pick one up for your birthday! :D

There's a Contender .30-30 barrel on Gunbroker with a Buy It Now price of $250. The dealer is in Kentucky. That would be well under budget and still leave something for quite a few extra components.

What about a Contender barrel in 7-30 Waters? Not 30 cal...but has 30 in the name with less recoil and flatter shooting then the 30-30.

A Winchester '94 in 30-30 is something a guy should own though...

You can still find WASR's for around 500, (maybe a tad more). 7.62x39 is 30 caliber its just metric.

Uhhmm, 1919a4!

Just remember that once you go belt fed ammo triples in price. Not because of the gun but because you're burning thru belts so fast having fun shooting it. Even in semi they're lots of fun, one of the guys I shoot with ran a belt thru his M2 in about a minute or less. Started laughing and said "there goes $300 bucks"!

Depends on what you wanna do ?

#C m1 carbine plus dies and a handful of components

Fun for blasting, not much else- short of defense.

I like 50 shooters idea, but if you could get it for $500- you'd NEED to tell us where to go get one, too.

Hey WKY,

Keep up the age/caliber trend. Sending you future best wishes for a nice Brown Bess musket (75 caliber) and start saving now for a 105mm Howitzer!

Dan, your thinking further out than I am... I'm still tickled at the thought of my 50th. :) M2 dang it.

Another awesome idea I ran across is a sw model 30. I like a 32swl and I love revolvers so this is a big maybe. Any love for an I frame?
